I put in an order for a Byron Morgan DH89 in mid November and was told approximately 8 weeks to complete my order. Well it's now over 4 months and I have to beg to get an update. When I do get a text or email answered, it's a "I'll find out for you" response and I hardly ever "find out". I put half down in the beginning and the rest is to be paid when it's finished. I was so excited to have a custom putter made and went all out on it. I love their products but now have a bad taste in my mouth. If I do get this putter in soon, maybe that taste will go away? Who knows? I guess I'm looking for suggestions or discussions on what some of you may do or even some past experiences with with similar type situations.

Call, and do not hang up, and demand to speak to someone who knows. If the answer is "I don't know," then respectfully ask to speak to a manager or someone above them, and then if they don't, repeat. 4 months for a putter is absurd.

my experience with Byron wasn't a good one -- but all i can say is - make sure you get pics of your putter BEFORE it is shipped out so it's what you want. if you're having this many issues just checking in on it, make sure there weren't issues getting it done how you want.

i will never buy a custom byron again FWIW. you could always cancel and have someone else do a custom for you? there are quite a few others who are MUCH easier to talk to than Byron. after 4 months and limited communication, i'd cancel the order.

I just talked to another rep who I'm closer with and I think he's getting involved because my rep finally called and offered some money off the order. Apparently the Deep Water finish takes a long time but that was never disclosed up front. I was just given a timeline and that's it. He said it's only a couple weeks away now but I still feel that it's unacceptable even after taking a hundred off.

Acceptable or not, I can try to shed some light. I'm not even 100% sure this is accurate, this is just from my understanding.

Byron makes heads in batches. The finishes made outside of the shop get sent there to have it done when there are enough putters to justify it so he doesn't need to send off every single one individualy. I also think he might save up enough finished putters before shafting, gripping and boxing them.

So, sometimes if your timing is unlucky, you may have to wait until he makes a certain batch of heads, then wait for a certain finish, then wait for a " boxing and shipping day".

I've ordered three from him and was told 8 weeks for all. If I remember correctly, one took quite a bit longer, one was about 8 weeks and the last one I got this winter only took about 3 weeks.

He is a one man shop and I think this is just the most practical way for him to go about it. The reps aren't in his workshop and probably don't know exactly what he is working on any given week, they just help out with emails so he doesn't have to spend time answering every individual email himself.

Again, not sure this is 100% accurate, just how I think it works.

Think about it like this.  You've waited 1/3 of a full year for a putter.  That's a LONG time...especially with poor communication along the way.

You have a sour taste in your mouth over the deal...and you've likely been stewing on it prior to creating this thread.

Even if the putter turns out better than expected...you'll have this in the back of your head when (not if) you string up a couple of 3 putts during a round.

I'd cancel the order...put my mind at ease...and move on to the next putter or putter artisan.

Good luck!!

The bad taste will go away, especially if you went 'all in' on it as I did with my Slighter mallet a decade back. I knew it would be a few months but the complexity of the build, a hefty backlog and some unforeseen stuff doubled the estimated time. Communication was excellent which helped, but this was my first custom and I knew it would be extraordinary when Tom finished it. Ten years in the bag and I'm still smiling at the thought of a master craftsman bringing my vision to life... it will be the same for you.

My Byron took all of 3 months, and I feel like this time of year is probably when orders spike given the cabin fever of winter and all. He definitely does batches of heads per finish type, and that's most likely the cause of the extended delay. Lastly, the putter will assuredly be awesome upon completion with the possible exception of the paintfill. (Don't know why Byron is lacking here, easy fix though). Other than that, the head, the design and the stamping will be great. Waiting is hard, but I'm sure it will meet your expectations as it's a complete custom of your own design. I've never heard many bad things, but as with many other custom built items, timeframes vary and can get out of hand easily depending on demand. Just my 2 cents.

I ordered a 612 SS w brushed deep water in late January.  The waiting game really sucks but the end product will be worth the trouble.

I got a call back yesterday and was given $100 off. Told them it's really given me a bad taste in my mouth but he's assured me that I won't be disappointed with the brushed deep water. He told me the batch is going in for the finish in less than two weeks so maybe I'll have it within the next month. My only hope is that it will all be worth it.

Hang in there, just think of the added excitement when you get the final email/call that it's ready and that bad boy is in transit.  You'll be counting the minutes until the box arrives and you get to roll a few.

I have never ordered from Byron, but I have had stuff made with other guys, mostly pool cues and putters. My strategy has been to try and forget I made the order so that when it arrives in 6 months, it’s like a surprise. Lol.

So the story continues...and gets even better. It's been 6 months now...I keep getting promises that it's going to be any day now...but listen to this story - a separate but coincidental instance.

In late January, I ordered and designed a custom Byron headcover set (D, FW, U) that I planned on using with my custom putter from a different Byron rep. Well....come to find out Byron sent the headcover manufacturer the wrong order - he sent 3 Drivers instead of D, FW, H, so 3 drivers were shipped to the rep this week. The problems are compounding, kind of sad actually. If anyone wants an extra driver headcover let me know lmao.

Not good to hear. These types of stories are what keeps me away from a fully custom anything in the golf world. I too, have had multiple negative experiences with smaller companies in the golf world (putter makers, headcover makers, etc) and it baffles my mind at truly how bad their communication is. These smaller shops either need to hire someone just for the sake of communication, or to decline orders until they can keep up with demand. The customer should never have to continuously check in with them. For the amount of money a lot of these "custom" and "boutique" guys charge, you'd think they would be better at something as simple as communication. I think if I were to ever drop money on a custom putter, I would have to find someone local to me, that way I can check-in with them in-person, everyone has access to email at their fingertips these days and there is no reason for a lack of communication to happen IMO.
I play a mish-mash of brands and am an avid Arccos user.

I understand how it works, but after waiting that long, and IF something wasn’t how I wanted I would hate to think how much longer to send back and have corrected. His process is what it is. I’d get my money back or want more than a little compensation as 4 months and you still have nothing. What if it turns into 6 months? and you miss half this season pending your location...they’re nice, but at this point time to make a decision.

Seems like you’re slowly running out of options.

If it were me, I would send a fake letter or email from a “lawyer” and see how quickly you get a response. Just something with a lawyers letterhead and a little ESQ after the name and I can assure you someone will respond to you.

Sounds cheesy but it works.

It would be interesting to really hear how this all happened on their end. If the finish was the issue, how many other people are waiting as well???? My guess is the putter had to be re-made at least once and the second go around got lost in the mix of other orders.

I would ask for a refund and see how that expedites matters, no business likes cancelled orders after they've begun production. Might just be the fire they need to get their a**es moving!

Six months is insane.  I've never ordered one myself but I've had a couple friends get one over the years and they've just been the stainless blast but all were received within a month.  I understand the finish thing but that should be a 6 week delay max...

You are in a tough spot. This is a busy time for putter makers. If you cancel your order now and place with another guy, there a good chance their wait is 6-8 weeks too.

I believe they messed up your order somehow. Forgot about it. Did something wrong. I dont know, but they are trying to cover up for a mis step here.

Even Lamb could finish a putter in 6 months....

6-7 months for something that was quoted 6-8 weeks is approaching government levels of incompetence.

I would ask for a refund ASAP

When dealing with boutique makers of any type, this is unfortunately not uncommon. Especially when they outsource certain accepts of their product vs. 100% in house.

I had a copper plated, carbon DH89 a couple years ago take 9 MONTHS to be refinished (it was in perfect shape, just the plating started bubbling on me strangely). Byron had me send it directly to Colbert plating where it sat for almost 5 months. I then requested it to be done by a different vendor as 5 months seemed pretty ridiculous. It then went to a place in California. A few more months passed and Byron was told their copper tank had been down for maintenance for awhile. It finally went to a 3rd vendor (I think it was BOS) where it was finished in a couple of weeks. When it's out of Byron's hands he's at the mercy of whatever is going on at wherever he sent it to.

You certainly deserve to be compensated for going over quote to this degree as at the end of the day, it's Byron's name on the putter. I'm just saying, this kind of stuff happens.
