Picked this up today, as some branches of Waterstone's in the UK received it early.

Couldn't resist reading the PEDs chapter first, to see if there was any more evidence that Tiger did or didn't use them.

I won't bother repeating stuff we already know about, and the only additional evidence that he did is pretty flimsy. An unnamed source who supposedly had knowledge of Galea's treatment of Woods's injured knee and Achilles said that the PRP injections also contained "miniscule" amounts of both testosterone and HGH, but that the injection was too localised to ever show up in a drug test.

On the other side of the fence, there's a circa page long statement at the end of the chapter from Dr. Mark Lindsay, who says that he never witnessed Tiger take, discuss, or ask for any PEDs, or even indirectly hint about the subject matter of banned substances. He also gave his professional opinion that from closely working with Tiger and observing his physique etc., he doesn't believe that he ever used PEDs.

Right, gonna make a start on the rest of the book now!

It's sad that just as someone rises up there is always someone else who is eager to take them down even more quickly.

It's equally inspiring that just as someone falls there is always someone is who eager to lift them back up even more quickly.

Viva La Tiger and his ever loyal followers!

This is pretty funny...reality check for the politician...

El Tigre has had his fair share of reality checks in more recent years too.

Can't wait to see the new smiley friendly TW get asked questions about his past, again, for the uhm-teenth time.  Will he snap back into Ivan Drago mode or just pour on his new found humility to douse the flames?

He's only 42. A bit early for a biography I would think. What's the next 42 years? A footnote?

Bobby Jones wrote an autobiography in 1928 when he was 26 or 27 years old.

He wrote another later in life after his 1930 run.
Down the fairway, OB Keeler's book on pre grand slam Bobby. You wrote quite a few golf books later, bear in mind he retired from golf in 1930.

I just finished the new book about Tiger, all 512 pages of it and I've never read a better, more thorough biography. The authors even went back to his elementary school to verify or dispel some of Tigers claims. Like him or hate him, this book shows just how dominant he was back in his prime, winning over fifty percent of his matches during several streaks. I had forgotten many of his accomplishments and shortcomings. It is easier to understand Tigers traits when you realize what an unusual childhood and upbringing he had.
I think any golfer would be fascinated by this book!

I read it. Hank Haney better be getting royalties from this book, because nearly half of the "biography" is The Big Miss word for word.

I think  you're talking about the book that Haney wrote. I read it too and it's not near as good as this one that just came out a couple of weeks ago.

Just in the excerpts I have seen there was a simple error that should not be made if it was indeed "thoroughly" researched.  Hurts the credibility of the book in my mind.  I'm sure there are many bits that are true though.  Personally I don't care to buy it.

Slow your roll kemosabe. What was this simple error in an excerpt?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I listened to the book on audible. I thought it was excellent. I’ve also read Haney’s book. In no way does it make me judge Tiger one way or another. It just makes me have understanding on what others go through and how everybody has a story behind the scenes.

I did the same. How bad was that narrator? "Steve Ballesteros" I listen to a lot of audiobooks and this was one of the worse narrated.

I do question some of the facts presented in the book. For example, how could they possibly have know what Sam said to Tiger when she found him in the back yard unable to get up? It's pretty clear they took some liberties with the story.

If you want a taste I'd suggest trying to find mad dog (chris russo's) interview with the two guys who wrote it. They are legitimate sports journalists and while I haven't read the book yet, I do prefer to have something well researched since everyone is reading things about tiger and interested in his life, might as well read something where hundreds of interviews have been conducted etc. I'd say before knocking it, try and find the interview referenced above because the authors seemed to really be fans of tiger by the end and, unlike the other books by Haney and Williams etc, they aren't scorned nor do they have any agenda or axe to grind; they have written several books on a variety of topics.

Is there anything in the book

That we did not already know?

Oh, here is a gem from the unbiased

"Tiger’s inability to show gratitude, apologize, or express appreciation was rooted in his warped upbringing,” Benedict and Keteyian write. “His mother pampered him like a prince, and his father rarely uttered the words thank you or I’m sorry. Tiger learned early and often that his needs were all that mattered. His unapologetically self-centered attitude was critical to his success in golf, but it had an utterly devastating impact on the way people perceived him.”

The book is largely derivative, so it's more of a "one stop shop" for all things reported about Tiger, especially the last 10 years or so.  Lots of acknowledgements (which there would have to be given there isn't a lot of original research), of course no footnotes.  But it's not David McCullough territory, lol.

It's an easy read, designed to be that way.  A few things ring hollow and are a little troubling with a couple of instances where people revealed things that should have remained confidential (nothing earth shattering, just noticed a couple instances that most won't likely even notice).

They seem to fill in blanks from time to time without even a suggestion of sourcing, and some of those suggestions/claims are a little more significant and the prose seems to attack rather than be a factual record, so I must say it gets very editorial at times, which isn't really what I want in a biography - give me the facts and let me decide about the man.

I will say I expected the PED stuff to be like some of the nonsense that used to come up on here, but they skirt that very carefully, as they should, and include a statement from one of Tiger's doctors that is new, so far as I know, and pretty impactful. Any suggestion they've broken new ground or are making new accusations, or claiming to support any accusations would be wrong, so the "haters" will be disappointed with that part of the book.

Treatment of the Masters rules issue was superficial and didn't address the actual rules/decisions in play - just hit the highlights and skim over the substance which most leaped over in the frenzy of irrationality that accompanied that episode.  A little disappointed with that section.

It was like they wanted to hit everything they could with Tiger coming up/anything weird or unusual in his childhood/parents/personal relationships, get to the "incident" (which is how they tease the book at the start) and the aftermath, then it kind of devolves into getting the book over with, IMO.

Way too much about the private escapades, and nothing really new (again some things a little sketchy, but the stuff we've all read before is plenty for sure), but that's what sells the book.  Checking boxes on anything previously reported that caused a stir.

Can't say there is anything ground breaking about Tiger's past, again, pretty derivative, but it is all packaged in a way that it is the most current, and therefore, most complete compilation of everything Tiger, so I guess instead of reading a couple of other books and a bunch of articles, it's all there.

I can't say there is any obvious agenda in the book, but Tiger's been involved in a lot of good work and the lack of reporting on that in any significant way has me thinking that over a little bit so still pondering the agenda thing, since this is supposed to be a "complete" look into what has shaped him and what he is.  That's the takeaway that is bugging me, not because I'm any kind of "fanboy", but because the book seems balanced yet really isn't balanced as I think about it.  Oh well, the negative stuff sells (and he provides plenty of true, negative grist for the mill).

Wasn't going to buy it, but paid about on Kindle what I was chiding someone earlier today for not ponying up in a pro shop because he wanted the "per hole" price for playing golf, so didn't want to be cheap about it, lol.

Are you referring to the story that came out shortly after Reed won the Masters? That whole thing was quite unseemly as far as I'm concerned. He just won the biggest tournament of his life and you decide to publish a one sided dive into his personal life, many of the incidents discussed are 8-10 years old? And his parents decided to participate in that? They play the bereaved shunned family for the camera right as their son is having the greatest day of his professional life. For what reason? The whole thing was disgusting.
