I have hit these irons and they feel good. The whole range of clubs are very good. I have never been worried by the looks of a club if it works well for me and I certainly wouldn’t not use a club just because it looks ugly if it performs well. People who say they wouldn’t use a club because it’s ugly always make me think they are more interested in a bag that looks good rather than playing good golf. I get that impression a lot on this site.

LaymanM,
Don't let the idiot bashers around here spoil your buzz.  If you like the irons that's all that matters.  F'um.

Always enjoy your comments in PING threads.  Thanks.  G10s weren't for me.  Too much offset. These should be a fun set to play when blades aren't in my bag.  Who knows, if I can control the distance and keep left out play they might get a permanent spot.  But solid back up set regardless.

It's amazing the comments lol. To each their own but I think we should all be happy there are so many clubs for us to choose from and that manufactures are pushing the envelope.  I think it's great that Dicks is pushing a brand that isn't a Kmart special.

I'm a decent player.  Fact of matter is, my scores do not change much no matter what clubs are in the bag.  Wheather it be blades, super GI irons or game improvement irons.

Right now I have four sets.

Callaway 18 Apex MB
Edel Forged CB
Ping g10
Tommy Armour TA1

I like clubs.  I've had a million different sets and I have spent enough time on trackman to know where my numbers need to be.  All good. End of the day I hope to get rid of the Edel and PINGS.  Just have too many sets.

If they weren't really good, I wouldn't have spent money on them haha

I bet if they said Ping, Titleist, Callaway etc on them they would "look" a lot better.
It doesn't hurt. Looks like something Titleist would have followed up with after the 755 irons

These would be a smashing success if they were Titleist.  Sad but true.  Brand perception.  We all act like marketing doesn't influence us but it does

Just no. More power to those that like them but looks can override brand loyalty.

They are a significant departure from the original TA1.

This right here. People can talk about custom built or used clubs all they want, but in the end a lot of people just walk into Dicks and want to buy something off the shelf to go play golf 2 days a month. If this gives them a decently performing, customizable option, I think that's great.

Of course, they may also go buy the Cobra Bafflers or Taylormade Rocketbladez that are still on the shelf even though they're what, 5 years old now? That's DSG for ya.

They don't look too bad in that address picture, too chunky for my taste, but I could see where people might take a chance on these.  I know the cavity is not seen at address and even though I think it's a goofy way to go about it, I can't bag something I don't like the complete looks of.  With that said, that badge in the cavity looks cheap and I wonder how long before the complaints start rolling in about them flying off during play.  I am a Srixon fan but when the 545 badges were coming loose, that gave me a reason to never put them in the bag....  I will be curious to hear your long term review on these though.

More than one person said they hit these and liked them.  One went as far as buying them. More power to him. Some people buy what is good for their game. Some people buy a pro bag for their ego when their game still won't support it. But if they have fun so be it. I have multiple sets and enjoy finding used equipment cheap and building different bags. I got blades all the way to shovels. I dont buy much new so it keeps the costs down and it is something I enjoy. I dont expect everyone or anyone to do what I do.  Everyone here has their own idea of what the game is to them and what will make it the most fun.

Good call man!  I
The TA1 will be for my back up irons.  I was fit for Apex MB with project x lz 6.0. I like having multiple sets around.  TA1 will be great for scrambles and days I'm not feeling it.  I just play for fun and also in a highly competitive league.  If they end up my gamers, fantastic.  I'm not worried.  I just wanted a game improvement iron that had minimal off set and that I don't hook.  TA1 fit that bill.  I carry my Apex MB 7 iron 160 yards on trackman.  TA1 had similar distance to Steelhead XR which I carried 7 iron 170.  I got rid of Steelhead because my miss was left or long.

I
My handicap is a 9.

I miss the old days when the ornamentation (functional or not) was simply paint-fill.  You could play those clubs forever and nothing falls off.  One reason I traded my Ping i3 irons . . . two clubs lost the i3 badges.

The Driver is really busy at address.  Irons are a lot nicer looking in person.

I hope they havea lot of success with this line.  With Adams apparently dead and gone and Cleveland being almost impossible to find in stores, there should be a market for a near premium club at this price point.

Yeah I do too!  I loved the simplicity of the irons without the inserts!  I also preferred irons that didn't have writing on the soles like the company name!  :)

Was in a GG today and they had a couple of the 7irons in the hitting bays.  The cavity looks better in person than in the pics although its still not a look I'm real fond of.  The red badge piece is brushed aluminum whereas in the pics it looks plastic-y.

Had some time to test their putters yesterday. Actually pretty impressed. Tried the #7 style in 34 inch and 38 inch CB and put a good roll on the ball for $100. Also available in a Newport 2 style and mid sized mallet from what I saw.

Went and hit some of the new Tommy Armour lineup yesterday. The irons are a little on the "clunky" side but not as much as some of the SGI clubs. They do not look as "cheap" in person as the pictures do, but they are a little on the busy side for those who like a clean look. Hit the 7 iron with impact tape. Actually a pretty forgiving club with consistent speeds off the face. Similar distances to my Steelhead Xr, with a touch more height and spin, probably due to the KBS Tour shaft. They even sounded decent, the one mark down for me, is there did not seem to be much feedback. But overall if the rest of the set is like the 7, they would be very playable for a mid-handicap. At $599 for 4-GW they could be a great bargain.

The driver was a mixed bag for me. The top of the driver reminds me a little of the coloring of the Bio Cell+ crossed with the lines from the TM M1. Nothing really stood out for me with the driver. It was about average in distance, with pretty good forgiveness, but low heel hits were really penalized, and low on the face seemed to be quite a bit shorter as well. Sound was good, it did not sound like a baseball bat or anything, and feel was quite good. I could tell on most strikes about where on the face I had hit it. I don't think I would pay $300 for this driver.......if that was my budget I would try to pick up a nice used driver over the TA1.

The hybrids weren't bad, but did not really stand out either. Fairly long and forgiving, and decent feel. But once again, for $179 I would be looking elsewhere, like the Mizuno JPX900 for the same price.

The GXT wedges, I did not even try because with only standard grind and one bounce option there are better options out there.

Overall I think the TA1 irons could be a solid option for a lot of players, but the driver and hybrids may get passed over due to the current price points.

I was at the local GG last week looking to Hoe as always!   My buddy that works there handed me the TA-1 3 wood.  It comes stock with a Kage shaft, and looks like the new Wilson (as others have said).  Swing after swing was crushed down the middle.   I went to the car and got my Titleist 917 and Taylormade M2 3 woods to compare.

The Tommy Armour was consistently 10-12 yards longer that the Titleist, and 6-7 yards longer that the Taylormade.  So of course, I bought it.  If the rest of the line is anything like the 3 wood, they might have a real sleeper here.

Awesome feedback.  Driver is going to be in the my golf spy 2018 driver shootout.  With DAT 55g cup face I want to see how it does.

Irons were great, can't wait to get them.

Because the target market for these clubs, rightly or wrongly, will not know there is a wealth of incredibly priced, quality golf clubs out there yet.

They go to what they think is a reputable "name" sporting chain and think that what is on the shelves is "it" in terms of choice because they have to start somewhere.

I definitely see a market for the irons.  A guy that isn't 5'7" - 5'10", who isn't an equipment junkie, is a recreational golfer, and doesn't want to spend $900 on a set of irons.  Maybe Dick's realizes they do need to step up their custom fitting game, and this "premium" house brand is their way of offering custom fitted product.  I can think of several casual golfer buddies that these would be perfect for.  Back when I worked retail the Cleveland TA-5 was kind of that forgiving, moderately priced quality product (sold a lot to guys who didn't want to spend the money for X-14's).  I see the Cleveland CBX irons are $799...so what product is currently easily available in custom options that isn't $100 or more per club for an iron?  I'm sure it's out there, but would take some digging to find...and the recreational golfer isn't going to do that.

I’m not one to be hyper-critical, but how do they sell a single set of these when someone can choose from the best 3-15 year old models from all the top manufacturers for the same or down to a fraction of the cost on EBay?   The sheer volume of fabulous deals on used equipment virtually guarantees the product manager that sold this idea internally at Dicks will be hustling real estate in three years.

Because the target market for these clubs, rightly or wrongly, will not know there is a wealth of incredibly priced, quality golf clubs out there yet.

They go to what they think is a reputable "name" sporting chain and think that what is on the shelves is "it" in terms of choice because they have to start somewhere.

Actually it is not their market.  Per their press release in golfdigest “It’s certainly an iconic brand in golf, and we’re going to relaunch it with a real key focus on innovation and building premium product with high quality materials and technology,” he said. “You’re going to see everything that you would expect from the big boys.”

Dick’s was public about their plan to cut 20-30% of their brands offered and focus more on private label brands. Acquiring the Tommy Armour license as part of the intellectual property purchase from Sports Authority really helped enabled them to “introduce” a new brand with a new focus on actual performance and higher quality materials while maintaining the price points gapped in most golf shops and simultaneously allowing them to maintain higher than average margins is a solid recipe for them. This would not have been as successful if they used one of their existing private label brands considering the perceptions and reputation they may already carry with them. This should be much more profitable than continuing to try to sell the more overlooked brands like cobra (sorry not personal) and not moving products until they mark them down and piss away the small margin they had to begin with.

I hate DSG as much as the next guy but this makes a lot of sense and should pay off.

I don't work for Dicks.  Never have never will.  Been since 2011 and an active poster and golf nut.  I wanted to share a great product I liked and purchased.  You can take your snide comments and do you know what

Pics or it didn't happen!!
