It will be announced later today. Will he be the first playing captain since Irwin?

It will be interesting too see why Presidents before (or instead) or Ryder Cup... I mean, nobody really cares about the PC so why give him the low tier event instead of the big one?

Why?    The Tiger is the absolute BEST choice to lead the American Squad.

He's getting Ryder Cup in 2024. He's also currently way inside the points list for the President's Cup team and will most likely make the team. Tiger is not. Also, they may have asked Phil and he said no and wants to concentrate on making the team, not captaining it.

What will make this interesting is, if Tiger is playing well, will he still captain it. If he does, will he play or will he focus on captainship?

Bit early for Tiger I would have thought, only 42. But then maybe the decision was made before he came back so strongly.

That might be part of it, but Golf Channel also reporting that the Tour is trying to boost the Presidents Cup. Nothing better than adding Tiger and one of his main rivals as the other captain. They just need to find a way to make the matches more competitive (without rigging of course). Gotta be tough on the International team though. Different continents and much more difficult language barrier than the European team for the Ryder Cup.

My guess is that it's already worked out that Phil will get Ryder Cup Captaincy first while Tiger is the President's Cup Captain and then they will switch it up....

Its the worst secret in the world that Steve Stricker will be the Ryder Cup captain in 2020.

I do find this timing odd that Tiger would agree to this when its clear he's not done playing, and now that he's starting to see the fruits of his surgery and swing changes.  Unless he has some sort of injury setback, based on his play now I think its a near certainty he'd be on the team in 2019.  Perhaps Tiger will name someone like Stricker or Fred Couples as a vice-captain and then say if he does qualify as a player, he will turn over captaincy duties to one of those guys.

I think they chosed to give Tiger the Presidents instead of the Ryder to give him a locked win instead of an awkward loss, just think Phil throwing Tiger under the bus 2014 style :D

The event needs a boost and the Tour turned to the one guy they know will give a huge boost.

When it came time to discuss possible captains for the 2019 U.S. Presidents Cup team, several members of the recent inner-circle of captains and assistants began tossing around names.

Tiger Woods, who has been assistant captain at the 2016 Ryder Cup and 2017 Presidents Cup, chimed in: "What about me?''

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, who didn't expect Woods to be interested in the duties so soon, said: "I think we can work that out.''

Woods said that when he inquired with Monahan about taking on the role, he did ask if he would be allowed to be a playing captain.
"Hale [Irwin] did it in the first year, the inaugural event,'' Woods said of the first Presidents Cup in 1994. "So I just wondered if that was an opportunity and he said that there's nothing in the bylaws that says I can't do it.

"It's going to be depending on myself, my assistants and the players, if I happen to get to that point. That's a bridge that's a long way away from now to be crossing, but if it does come to that point, it won't just be my decision, it will be a collaborative effort, what is best for the team.''

Yet you like and admire Tiger the person... I wonder if there’s a word to describe such double standards....
