Much has been said about the current purse sizes and how even a fairly journeyman player can retire early off the money earned from from occasional top 25 or top 10. Most people seem to think this has negatively impacted player's drive to be the best.

I am of two minds about this. On one hand, one you've earned enough money I can see how you might feel like "well, everything is just gravy now, lets just go out and have fun!" but on the other hand I see removing the anxiety around making a living as a massive de-stress that could help some people focus and play more aggressively because they are less worried about the outcome. I guess it comes down to how different people respond to different stressors but I really see it going both ways. What do you think?

You donít travel 30 weeks a year when you could be retired and only travel from home to home to home if you arenít truly trying to win . IMO

To be clear, i'm not trying to make it as black and white as "Guys that want to win vs. those who couldn't care less" i'm just talking about the different ways money can play a part in the drive to do so. More specifically, whether financial success frees them up to play with less anxiety or reduces the drive to put in the crazy hours these guys have to put in to compete at this level.

I don't think people don't care and don't want to win.  It just comes down to what you're willing to sacrifice.  In order to be the best you have to dedicate your life to the game.  Some people want to have work life balance, a family, and a life outside of the game.

Each guy kinda has something they're known for, best ball striker, best putter etc. The one moniker no one wants, is best player without a win. Because it wears on you the later in your career you get. All these guys wanna win, in golf,  ping pong, hoops, whatever it is. That's one thing that helped get you to this level, extreme competitiveness and desire to win.

I think all those guys have the desire to win.  What they may not have after a wife, 2 kids who are growing up while they are away and spending 10 years on the road is the dedication to commit so much of their life in pursuit of perfection.

I don’t think the money affects how badly anyone wants to win, but I think it makes losing a lot less painful, and the net result may be the same.

Another way to look at it - guys are really "going for it" with driver, firing at pins, etc, because wins mean more than placing 24th instead of 44th. Well except for jb apparently....

There's definitely times where players make business decisions though, middle of the pack Sunday no chance of winning you just gotta play to make all the money/points you can.

So why does a third line shut down center not win the scoring title in the nhl

Some guys are trying to get their jobs
Some are trying to keep them
Some are trying to get in invitationals
Some are trying to get top 30

Most have to work their way through those levels

There are very few that want/expect to compete for victory every time they tee it up

Itís funny when I hear people say this. Iíve read in other threads how todayís player has a swing coach, short game coach, mental coach, strength coach and dial in their numbers on trackman all day and how guys back in the day would just show up to the club, play a round with the boys, and have a steak, cigar, and some drinks post round.  Youíd think those smaller purses would give that motivation to work harder to win and make an amount to live off of.

all of these guys want to win in the beginning..

...after a few years without any win but still making good money that motivation to win will be replaced by just wanting to play well enough to remain on tour..

..but still hoping they will win one day..

He really needs to find his drive again doesn't he?

I was pondering about this yesterday.
Ok here is my theory:
So Rory at the height of his power was chasing a rabbit .  He wanted to catch that rabbit so bad!  But the rabbit disappeared .  So he lost his interest.

Now the rabbit is back a rabbit named Tiger and the Game is back on!

Or hopefully

People who need to win at things are often not motivated by money. They are an entirely different kind of animal....you see this when you play pickup basketball games or whatever, there's always 1-2 guys that take it too seriously. And theres no money at stake there....guys who are obsessed with winning are obsessed with winning no matter the stakes

As far as fringe guys trying less hard because they are comfortable, sure that happens....it happens in your office too with guys making 60k.

The "these guys don't try because of the money" narrative is another bit of nonsense just driven by people who think their generation was better than the next.

While Iím sure youíre aware of my sentiment in regards to pro golf being a job

I was referring to in this case those that can retire but choose not too. Theyíre  not going through the grind week in and week out for the money if they can already retire their doing It too win.

Totally agree.  I think it's funny that in the real world if someone only wants to work 50 hours a week vs working 90 hours a week to be at the top, people totally get that.  But if a professional athlete doesn't want to dedicate his life to a sport in order the be #1, he's "soft".  I understand that super dedicated people are more fun to watch on TV, but there are people, lives, and families behind the avatars that people project on.

In EVERY sport there are going to be guys who have talent but not much drive. There's only one Super Bowl, NBA Championship, and World series to win. Tons of players that will play their entire careers and never see a ring.

These guys on Tour play to do the best they can do and I'm sure they'd all like to win. Do they all have the same drive? No way.

I saw the same Charlie Rymer interview the OP did yesterday on morning drive. Older guy talking about gamesmanship and how maybe these guys today aren't as competitive because they can earn great livings being middle of the pack.

I see removing the anxiety around making a living as a massive de-stress that could help some people focus and play more aggressively because they are less worried about the outcome.
Very few golfers play without anxiety about their financial results.

I think there are a great many tour players (just as there are people in the work world) that strive to “live in the middle.”
Comfortable with complacency.  Golf pays the bills.

I read earlier today that Scott Verplank has made over $27,000,000 in his career.  Five wins, no majors and just about $850,000 a year as little more than a journeyman pro.  I can definitely see where the drive to win majors and be the best of the best could suffer making that kind of money.

they all want to win, it's just some probably wait for the week to align rather than the extra 10% in effort to get there more often.  The amount they have to give up at that level to be truly elite is likely more staggering than most could imagine.

I too think they are out there to win, if they don't play all out they will find themselves without their card. Even those players who are financially all set are going out there to win...if not, why waste the time away from home, traveling, and the like?
