The yardage to the hole very often has no bearing on what a tour pro is hitting into a green.  They're aiming at a target, and many times its not the flag.  Perhaps its a spot on the green that is a good place to putt from.  Perhaps its a spot on the green that is away from any trouble or hazards.  If a pin is in the back on a green and there is trouble behind, or if a pin creates a sharp downhill putt if they go past the flag, they're usually aiming short.  Perhaps they just want a yardage that will carry to the front of the green if they want a ball to release, or a certain yardage to carry a greenside bunker.  These guys are so precise and sharp with their numbers and distances that we would probably be surprised at how small of a target these guys are aiming for.

That's why I always chuckle when these announcers seem surprised when they are hitting certain shorter clubs into longer approaches....they usually arent aiming at the pin.

It's about 1.5 clubs longer than a typical tour 8-iron.
Easily explainable by downwind/downhill/flier lie or firm greens.

So I'm watching the Valspar

The players are hitting a 180 yard eight iron .
How in the world do they hit their 8 so far?

Given they do say they are inbetween a 7 and a 8 for that hole.  But I watched Sergio (who I didn't think was THAT long) and Adam Scott hit 8's 180 ish yards.  And this is a par 3...

What gives?  How do I do this? Haha

My 8 is about 165-170, dont have jacked lofts, 37* 8 iron...

I carry my driver 295-300.  Swing speed with that club is 118-ish on average.  Sometimes more, sometimes less.

But I would never hit an 8-iron from 180 yards without some helping factors.  No point.  I have a 7-iron for that.

One time at the now-defunct Moors course in Milton, FL, I hit a 200-yd 8-iron out of a flier lie.  Unfortunately the green was only 170 yards away.  I haven't replicated that one.

Juiced lofts and vice versa.  I'm sure a lot (if not all) of pro golfers irons are dynamically fitted for yardages.

I used to compete in long drive. i was decent but never one of the monsters, and never made it very far. I always thought i was long till i got there. club head speed these days is in the low 120s (120-124ish) with a driver. with a long driver and when i was training for it. i got up to the mid 130s. longest drive in competition was 401.

Then I believe your distance is about right. But you're an anomaly!
I used to have those speeds, but that was in my 20s. And I was using balata balls then, so comparing
my 8 iron from then would be pointless.

My buddy swings an 8 iron like a chip shot , smooth slow his stock 8 iron is 175 but can easily hit it 1 80, 2clubs more than me and he has an old set of irons no juiced lofts, serious lag on slow motion. Im in awe how far he hits it with such a slow move. 170 is now the strong players 8 iron,

I don't mean to generalize, but I think it's not all that uncommon. I went out with a couple buddies the other day at Johns Island West, and there was a couple times we all had about 180 in and hit 8 irons. Two of these guys are tour winners, ones played in multiple majors, and im just a lowly superintendent. Thru delofting the club at impact, trapping it against firm turf, and hitting perfectly every time you're going to get good distance. It wasn't that long ago Tigers 8 iron from 181 at 16 Firestone was otherworldly, I hit it 182 uphill to 12 feet and sank the bird, got cut by the nine iron hit to 7 feet from 171.

As others have said you're not necessarily playing to number of the pin, often playing to a percentage area, but these guys and gals have optimized their golf swings to produce distance and control.

Hell I was just in Scottsdale and my 8 was carrying 190! Couldn’t believe it despite the elevation and dry warm air. Blew my mind.
