So I'm watching the Valspar

The players are hitting a 180 yard eight iron .
How in the world do they hit their 8 so far?

Given they do say they are inbetween a 7 and a 8 for that hole.  But I watched Sergio (who I didn't think was THAT long) and Adam Scott hit 8's 180 ish yards.  And this is a par 3...

What gives?  How do I do this? Haha

The 180 isn't the carry number though, most are landing 10-15 yards short and running up. Hitting 8 irons around 160 yards is doable for tour players.

This was probably on a hole where the wind was at their back.

I know people that can easily do that under the right conditions.  Playing a 200 yard hole that is a bit down hill and my buddy is saying 8 iron?  I say no way...he airmails the green with and gives me that look.  I hit 3 wood......

Just as I clicked on this Garcia hit 8 iron to a 198 pin. At least the announcers clarified that it was down hill down wind.

Tiger hit 8 iron, from the fairway bunker on 18 last week and it was 220+ to the hole. He was hole high left, slight pull, but got up and down for a birdie........So in retrospect, that 180 8 iron is not that big, except for us mere mortals.............

Wind at the back, and most guys are trying to bounce it about 7 yards short because the greens are so firm.

173 carry downwind off the left shoulder with an 8-iron is fairly pedestrian for these guys.

Gary Woodland needed a #6 iron, as his #8 hit the wall and bounced back into the water.

Haha. I am guessing that there are other conditions at play that lead to those results, but it can be done.

I remember playing a round with DriverWedge about two years ago and he asks for my 42 degree 9iron on a 185 yard par 3. I ask, "What for?" He stands up and flies the green with it. I was like, "Ooooo...K?"

Yes. You see a golfer has 230 to the hole on a par 5 and hits a 4-iron. What they don't often tell you is the player isn't trying to hit the ball 230, but more like 200 or so.

My guess is more tour players can hit an 180 8 iron, they just choose not to for consistency. Theory hold?

I watched European Tour pro's averaging 220yd drivers in beautiful cold windy and wet Scotland. Its all about the temperature and air density as well as clubhead speed. If you have ever played a links course on a breezy hot day you'll know how far you can hit the ball- it makes you feel Tour level status lol

Exactly.  Jason Day and DJ, along with others, hit irons in the 270 range and there are a lot of very talented players on this site who easily hit a 230 yard 4 iron. Although it's not me, I watch their talents.

Of course, some people think 8 minute tee times mean you have to play the first hole in 8 minutes.

Weird.

Forward shaft lean, de-loft. I only carry my driver 275-280, but my shaft lean with iron has me capable of 165 with 9. My 3i carry is only 205-210. It's all about impact.

As others have mentioned, downhill, down wind.  Also, some tour lofts are more aggressive or they forward-press their 8 iron to make it like a 7-6 iron.  That's why they are the pros...

160 with an 8 iron is a missed strike, they regularly hit an 8 iron 175 - 180 at sea level.  Amateurs in ages 16 - 50 hit an 8 iron 150 - 160.  I have seen some pro's who carry an 8 iron 180, not counting roll.  Distance they hit no longer surprises me, and no way I can identify with their game.

They are in a different world.

A 230 yard 4 iron isnít that rare on tour.  And I mean a legit 230 yard 4 iron.

I know, DJ hits his M4 4 iron 250 plus yards. My point was the commentary always refers to the 224 yard par 3, hitting X club and save for one or two, the carry distance is miles short but it runs up the green.

Given the ridiculous debate about needing to roll back the ball it's unhelpful to give the impression these guys are hitting wedge 160 yards etc as very few of them hit THE number. Same way DJ can't drive it 375. It's 320 plus roll.

Makes it too simplistic for the casual fan to understand the complexity of the game and gives the impression pros are hitting even further than they actually are.

This is WRX, who on here doesn't hit theirs the same length?  Some of WRX might even need to take a little off to hit the 180 number! :cheesy:

Course and weather conditions are the reason why they would try to hit an 8 iron 180yds.  Tiger being one of the longest players on tour has listed his stock iron yardages plenty of times and his 8 iron is like 160yds.  THat doesn't mean he can't hit one 175 with it if he wants by delofting the club.
