If you had the opportunity to live within 30-45m of any major metropolitan center in the US, where would you move for a couple of years to play golf (and work)?

For example, if you had an opportunity to do 2-year field-based role away from home office.  Would prefer low(er) cost of living (vs. NYC, San Fran, Bos) and ability to live on a golf course.

Phoenix or Austin/San Antonio area.  Good quality of life, overall weather, cost of living, and above average to very above average public golf.

Phoenix or Vegas for me. Not sure if I'd be alive after 2 years in Vegas but I would love to find out.

Its pushing the distance limit just a little, but Pinehurst is pretty dang nice.  About an hour drive to Raleigh, under 2 hours to Charlotte.

Preferable... I play 60% of my golf in 4 months of summer.  Unless it is over 110 the heat isnt a problem, and contrary to popular belief it isnt over 110 often enough to really interrupt play.  I can play 36 holes in summer in the same time it takes to play 12 holes in winter.  Rates are so low, courses are in good shape except for the normal punching.  Hows the golfing in Boston?

Austin, SA and the metroplex are hot in the summer and humid.  Not Houston humid, but very noticeable.

I completely agree - why limit yourself to a shorter golf season up north when these cities are available!?  Plenty of other things to do in these cities/metros outside of golf, too!

Golf in Boston metro area... public courses within 30m or so of the city are generally speaking meh.  Once you get further out (1 hr+) you start to get some good options.  Plenty of good, EXPENSIVE, exclusive private clubs, though.  Generally speaking is pleasant to play in the late spring. summer, fall.

Beautiful playing in New England in the late September/early Oct timeframe.

Raleigh - close to Pinehurst area, great year round weather, and good cost of living
Orlando - ton of great golf, low cost of living, year round ability, close to beaches and SE / SW golf
Phoenix - awesome weather, I personally love desert golf, and the "scenery" is pretty glorious

Just spent a week and a half in Orlando for work and snuck in 3 rounds.  The amount of publicly available, relatively cheap (given it's high tourist season as a non-resident), good golf in a small area made me sad.

Since golf is important, I think you would want to be somewhat south.

If you want a job in your specific field, that might be more important than the golf course.

You guys are thinking too inside the box.  Hawaii!  guaranteed year round weather and many courses have local rates.  Cheap puddle jumpers to the other islands. Honolulu is a major city, although most of us wish it wasn't such a city.

A friend of mine lives in hawaii he golfs 6-7 days a week and has an awesome work schedule since he works from home.  He usually works from 7-11am then goes and plays.  It's insane expensive out there though for 500-600k expect a tiny s*** hole of a house next to meth houses and chickens.....

Orlando would be a good option for year round golf good golf courses and cheap living.  Vegas or Phx is going to be too cold in winter.

Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, Orlando, south Florida or Palm Springs/Palm Desert.

If you can deal with the summers in some of those places.

Florida summer humidity is gross and the 105+ days really suck in the desert. If you can deal with the negatives For a few months you can enjoy the rest of the year.

Actually....Columbus really isn’t bad other than the shorter season.  Very spoiled for Golf here and cost of living is very  good.

Perhaps you missed the aspect where the OP said he wanted to live in a major metro area?  NY/Boston/SF etc.  Do you think these places are ... ummmm cheap?

So now we can't live anywhere that has wind?  They are islands  ... of course they will have wind and why is that a bad thing?  I'll show you some great courses where wind is a major defense, what about Bandon Dunes/Pacific Dunes don't play there because they have wind?

He is only living there for 2 years and I would recommend NOT to buy anything wherever he goes for 2 years and rent. Don't tether that to the conversation for sure, separate for sure.

Hawaiians play for considerable discounts just about everywhere.  Check it out I know people who live there and while not cheap like a 25 muni in the middle of Kansas they have great golf at their disposal.

I stand by Hawaii and not because I would do it, but because it checks just about all the boxes.

Palm Springs/Coachella Valley and Phoenix if you don't mind 3/4 months of over 100 degree weather....but great golf and great deals when its that warm and pretty decent rent rates and cost of living on a course
Charleston SC is a great option but summer is really humid and hot for 3/4 months but more manageable I think than the SW options and just a wayyyy cooler city
Denver has 300 days of Sun and milder winters than we think not sure how the public golf is tho but pretty decent rent and cost of living possibly 30 mins outside city center
Detroit/Ann Arbor is quite the experience (did it for 5 years might go back) with great low cost of living and great golf options public and private but only 6 month season and then you can be a snow bird to those SW cities
