So earlier this year I was one of the lucky 7 that went to TaylorMade Kingdom, Carlsbad for an amazing fitting and an unforgettable experience thanks to GolfWRX and TaylorMade. You can find the whole trip review and experience HERE if you are interested.

I was fitted with M3 440 9* head with Graphite Design Tour AD TP 6s shaft, head set at 1 click before LOWER setting, unfortunately I didn't came home with the 440 head because it was out of stock at the time, instead TM gave me a 460 head so I have something to play with for our round there @ Aviara. But no worries, I got my 440 head last week and there will be a separate comparison after a few more rounds with the head.

Like any true GolfWRXer I bought a Rogue SubZero 9* driver from DiscountDan while I was waiting for my 440 head after reading and watching all the reviews I could find, a lot of good things was said about Rogue SZ. I had last year's Epic SZ for a short period of time when it first came out, didn't like it at all, sold it and stayed with my tour issue M2.

Driver -

M3 460, 9.5* head set at 7.75*, both weights set forward toward face.
Rogue SZ 9* head set at 8* D, 14g weight froward, 2g weight back.

Shaft -

Both drivers were tested with Graphite Design Tour AD TP 6s shaft
Both driver plays @ 44.75” length
Both driver has MCC+4 grip
As you may noticed on the shaft graphics in the picture, TaylorMade tipped their driver shaft 1” as their standard vs no tipping for Callaway. This is the only major difference I can think of that may or may not contributed to my comparison review.
Posted Image

One tiny boring thing I noticed on TaylorMade shafts (one from Kingdom, one came with the 440 head), there are two different adaptors.
Posted Image

Ball -

I used brand new Titleist Pro V1x for both driver during my test.

Look - Rogue SZ

Lets start with M3, personally I like the original white/carbon crown on 2016 M1/M2 look best, much easier for me to align with confidence, 2017 was ok and I don’t particular care for the new M3/M4. For Me, I find the new M3/M4 very difficult to know for sure whether face is open/square/close at address.

Rogue SZ improved big time from last year’s Epic SZ busy crown graphics, Rogue’s graphic is also less visible vs Epic from address.

Footprint and profile from address, M3 440 (small/shallow) < Rogue SZ < M3 460 (big/deep). I def. like either M3 440 or Rogue SZ better over M3 460 head.

Sound and feel - Rogue SZ

Both M3 and Rogue has somewhat “muted” sound because of carbon fiber crown construction and both driver head feel solid on sweet spot hits, but M3 feel a bit harsher on mishit and it’s also just a little louder to my liking vs Rogue.

Side Note -

2 small black plastic molding looking pieces came out of the 460 head, first rattle started during our round @ Aviara, I was able to shake a piece out thru the hosel. Couple of weeks ago the rattle came back and I shake another piece out. Not sure where those 2 pieces came loose from within the driver and not sure if it affected performance of the driver?!

On Course - Rogue SZ

M3 460 has a fairly tight dispersion on good hits which I like, but can be “unpredictable” when mishit. Like many has predicted when “TwistFace” first came to light from TaylorMade that an OPEN FACE toe hit will result a RIGHT and further RIGHT shot, I’ve hit plenty of those during my test. You also get punish with a greater lose of distance when miss the sweet spot. It is also harder for me to work the 460 on different trajectory or shot shape.
I am blown away by Rogue SZ’s performance after owned last year’s Epic SZ for less than 2 weeks and sold it with great disappointment. Much improved on sound, feel and look. I feel confident at address and able to work the ball both ways, high or low. Doesn’t lose much distance on mishits and it’s more predictable. Played with my usual group on Sunday @ my home course, hit 12/14 fairways and the 2 missed fairways was because I wasn’t expecting the drive to go that long that the fairway ran out. Not trying to be cocky or anything but it was pretty much aim and hit for me on Sunday with Rogue.

The test is not over but as of now M3 460 is out and Rogue SZ is in. I’ll be spending the next few weeks testing and playing both Rogue SZ and M3 440.

What came out of the head causing the rattle? Metal? Dried epoxy? Something else? Do you have a pic of the pieces?

Itís not epoxy or hotmelt, itís plastic piece. It look like those connection tabs when you do molding?! I saved the piece for picture but my girlfriend throw it away thinking itís trash!!

great insight here... can't imagine the 440 M3 is going to push aside a club hitting 12/14 fairways

12/14 fairway hit may be an one off, honey moon period or whatever you want to call it, but on 2 or 3 holes my drive ended at yardages that I've not reached ever before, which was a big surprise. One Par 5 in particular I hit driver and 4 iron onto the green and smoothly 3 putted for par, last time I can remember I reached that Par 5 in two was with my 3 wood.

average swing speed right around 100mph
AoA +3* - +4*
Launch 13* - 15*
Spin Rate 2200-2600 (M3 data)

with my peasant swing speed I can't afford to lose too much distance on mishits, Rogue SZ is more forgiving than M3 460 on that department.

I'm loving my Rogue SZ.  I actually cut it down to just under 45 (had to add some head weight back to get swing weight up).  I'm loving it now!  I hit just as many fairways as I did with the 917 D3, but farther down the fairway now.

I had the 2017 m1 as well.  I really liked that driver, but traded it for the 917 d3 because I was more accurate with the 917.  I hit the m1 longer, but 917 straighter.  The Rogue SZ seems to give me the best of both.

I'm curious of how the M3 440 and 460 differ.  I hit both on Sunday and couldn't hit the 460 a lick.  My misses were right of right with little curve.  I couldn't find the face.  The 440 was crisp and I was able to see the benefits of the twist face more in the smaller head.  I hit one I thought would be 150 yards right and it drew back toward my target. My buddies who have the new M class laughed as I couldn't believe where the ball ended up.

There something to the technology for sure.

technology is def. there for the new M3/M4 there is no denying that, but unfortunately I may be in the group falls out of that 80% of test data. I have seen few shots that's saved by Twist Face but I also experienced some open club face toe hit that sailed way right. My thought on Twist Face is that it's better suited for

1.) better players
2.) players has a positive swing path (my natural swing path is around -4* to -6*)

good vs good, M3 460 and Rogue SZ are not that far apart, but on the misses is where Rogue SZ stand out for me at least.

Comparing a head you never liked (and was falling apart) maybe isn't the best test imo. Still feel bad about getting the only 440 out there. Sorry Calvin!! :)

I'm looking froward to your thoughts with the club you were fit for vs. the Rouge.

I'm curious what you find Gio being as our swings are very similar. Having said that I find the info in here very interesting and makes me want to grab a Rogue SZ to compare to the M3, which has been pretty good for me so far. The G400 Max = Turd! Its getting sold ASAP to soften the Rogue SZ blow.

Definitely lol but I am still curious to results. This thread has me wanting to put up the Rogue SZ against the M3 as his swing is similar to mine.

I'm curious what you find Gio being as our swings are very similar. Having said that I find the info in here very interesting and makes me want to grab a Rogue SZ to compare to the M3, which has been pretty good for me so far. The G400 Max = Turd! Its getting sold ASAP to soften the Rogue SZ blow.
lol

not sure if you're being sarcastic...or...

either way, i'll throw up the results.

Definitely lol but I am still curious to results. This thread has me wanting to put up the Rogue SZ against the M3 as his swing is similar to mine.
i know a guy selling one after the test...

Comparing a head you never liked (and was falling apart) maybe isn't the best test imo. Still feel bad about getting the only 440 out there. Sorry Calvin!! :)

I'm looking froward to your thoughts with the club you were fit for vs. the Rouge.
No need to feel bad Scott, I did end up with 2 drivers. :)

You are correct, I'm looking forward to properly fitted 440 vs Rogue. This first review is purely one driver head vs another driver head I have on hand, and for me Rogue came out on top in this round, nothing more than that.

Always winning. :)

Sounds like the 440 has its hands full. Your Cally set up seems to be killing it. I'll be happy to take that 440 off your hands, if it doesn't win out. :fan_1:

we will find out very soon, playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week. I'm very surprised by Rogue after bad experience with Epic last year, and also like you said I may have a defective 460 head with bits falling out.....lol

I will admit that when I first clicked into this thread, I fully expected a TM love fest.  I am surprised at the results and thank you for a well thought out comparison.  You did a great job of writing this up and comparing each.

Great read and appreciate the info being posted. I have a new Rogue SZ Iíve been hesitant to try as I usually just get along better with TM, but this thread has me wanting to give it a run.

After giving this review some thought I feel that it's an unfair review regarding the M3 460
1.) I was not fitted with M3 460 @ the Kingdom, the review should be between M3 440 vs Rogue SZ.
2.) Review was done knowing that the M3 460 head I have may be "defective" after 2 plastic pieces came out.

Based on that I find this review may not be helpful for others and it's also not the most accurate representation for M3 460.

Mod, can you please close this up.

Thank you
Calvin.
