Work is sending me to California for 33 days starting in April.  Will be traveling solo so I plan to really focus on improving my game in the eves after work.  Will be in the Oxnard, CA area (Between LA and Santa Barbara).  Looking for some good courses/ranges in the area, prefer not to break the bank so anything with good twilight rates would help.  Might be interested in playing one really nice course before heading back also.  Suggestions?

Olivas Links, Soule Park if it didnít burn down. If you can get on Saticoy Country Club is a great track.

I played River Ridge a few weeks ago and it was a pretty decent track.  Greens were in good shape and rolled nice.  The fairways were a bit thin, but it was the middle of winter here.  Layout was fun, and the price was pretty reasonable, I think it was like $45.  They have a big driving range, and a large practice putting green as well.  Don't recall if they had a chipping area or not.

I am actually staying right next to that course so I plan on hitting the range there quite often.

Saticoy Country Club looks amazing, but will be shocked if I can find someone to get me on!

Try Moorpark Country Club. They have 3 nines, and you can get on there pretty reasonably on golf now.

Having grown up in Oxnard and played courses from Monterey to San Diego, I can say that the Lakes course at River Ridge is one of the toughest/most fun courses I have played.  The greens are always pure and IMO the best you can find for the price out of all the courses I have played in CA.  The Vineyard course is much more vanilla than the Lakes course, but still offers some fun holes and usually has the greens a bit slower than the Lakes.

Olivas is another fun track, but can be overly crowded/priced.  It is a links style course, although I would say that it doesnt play as firm and fast as the layout looks.  Buenaventura is short and simple parkland course.  It has the second best greens out of the courses in the county.

Not sure what your free time looks like, but I would highly recommend a trip up to La Purisma.  US Open qualifier course that usually has pretty good conditions and not a lot of play on it as it is secluded in the Santa Barbara hills.

If I were you, I would not stray from the Lakes course at River Ridge.  The practice facility, course layout, and price cant be beaten.  Let me know if you'd like any other recommendations for the area.

agree with Buckeyerball that Rustic Canyon is an interesting course.  It's also cheap for the area, & has greens with sideboards and internal slope.

If you have access to private clubs,  Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks is good (but expensive).  I played there many years ago, before it was renovated.

Saticoy is a challenging course with elevation changes. If you can't find a local who has access, write to the general manager & ask if you can play.

Thank you all for the advice and information.  I would say River Ridge will get most of my action being within a few feet from my hotel.

Now this is a completely loaded question but what are the chances of actually playing Torrey (south course) during the twilight?  Is there a chance to get on the course??

Torrey in the afternoon is a crapshoot as to whether or not you will finish before dark.  If you want to play it, go earlier.

Is it pretty tough to get on through the week, mid day?

Haven't played in a few years, but Sandpiper and Rancho San Marcos are good layouts.

Ok I leave Monday for Oxnard, have a list of places to check out. No one mentioned Camarillo Springs....it’s cheap on TeeOff.  Won’t be able to place top tracks all the time so these cheap courses will get some of my time.

There is a reason no one mentioned Camarillo Springs... =) Try Sterling Hills if you are in the Camarillo area, only a little bit more $ for a better track. Right now they are doing a promo for $40 for 18, cart, range balls, and lunch

Torrey South is a toss up but worth a shot if you’re really interested in playing. If it doesn’t work out, the north course isn’t a bad backup. When I was there I never had issues playing the North in the late afternoon.

river ridge victoria links, olivas links, rustic canyon, soule park, ojai valley are my reccomendations all things considered. but it also depends on what youre looking for out of a course (how much PoP matters, condition, price, how long you want to drive). but river ridge victoria lakes and olivas links are both very solid public golf courses that are easy walks, affordable and good tests of golf from the back tees.

Thanks everyone. Been tearing up the range/practice facility at River Ridge everyday.  Played a round on the Vineyard course and it wasn’t bad for a twilight rate. Made it up to play Los Robles today and it was a fun course. Few hidden shots I would play differently now but I enjoyed it.

Robles is my home track. Played it regularly all my life and also in high school. They did a great job re modeling it to cut down on water costs. They did hike there rates up though, did you get a good deal?
