just made a $15 purchase that every golf traveler should invest in-- a TSA lock for your golf bag.

here's my story:

went to LA for a business trip but managed to get in early to play a round of golf.

i had a lunch meeting so checked out of my hotel room and left my golf travel bag with the bell hop (suspect #1).

after lunch, i grabbed an uber to head back to the hotel where i grabbed my golf travel bag and luggage while the uber guy waited (suspect #2).

before my next meeting, i wanted to head to the airport to drop off my golf travel bag so i wouldn't walk into the meeting with it (you can understand). but LA traffic said otherwise. i was running out of time so i asked the uber driver if he could drop me off at my meeting first, then take my golf bag to the airport and drop it off with the airline (JetSuite X public charter so they fly out of private terminals so you don't need a boarding pass to drop off luggage). he said he would be more than happy to and i even gave him $20 for his help.

after the meeting, went to the airport and saw my golf travel bag behind the counter waiting to be loaded (suspect #3).

when i landed back home, i went to my car and opened up my golf travel bag to unpack it.. only to find that my driver and 3 wood were gone.

horrified. who done it? most say the uber guy but he was such a nice guy. i even called him after and told him my driver and 3 wood were missing, hoping i could sense something in his voice.. but he said he immediately dropped off the bag at the airport.

lesson learned. my TSA lock will now be on the travel bag at all times. i suggest every golf traveler do the same.

I say suspect #1.

I eliminate the Uber guy because you seem to think he was telling truth.
The airport guy would have the most to lose, he works at a security sensitive place and hiding golf clubs and getting them out of the building might not be easy.
The bell hop had the time, the means and maybe no security clearance. Getting another job if caught might be no big deal.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. Good idea about the lock.

Uber driver.

Both the bellhop and FBO are going to have policies and procedures to prevent theft from bags. It wouldn’t surprise me if your bag was on surveillance video the whole time in the hotel custody (it would actually surprise me if it wasn’t). The Uber driver has almost no downside. You have a very flimsy “case” (basically he said he said), and he can’t be fired.

Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candle stick.

Getting stuff nicked sucks - fortunately I've only had a rangefinder stolen - but on the plus side... new golf gear!
If I had to pick though, someone at the airport. I don't think easily identifiable 'suspects' like the bell hop or uber driver doing that.

Edit: Good point by Raynor fan about CCTV, security methods, and the like at the airport, but I'll stick with option 3.

The Uber guy OF COURSE ....

Even if you didn't take an Uber, somehow an Uber driver was involved in the theft.

In all seriousness there is something off-putting reading about you asking the Uber driver to run an errand for you like he's your personal assistant. Hes your Uber driver.

Im  just saying to me it was offensive. Offering extra money wouldn't make it any better, I would be MORE insulted. In fairness I am not in the service industry and I'm not an Uber driver. So maybe asking someone to do that is commonplace.

*EDIT*

I should add that I wouldn't steal any of your clubs over it, but I could see where someone might. like sending your food back to the kitchen..... you run the risk

Package delivery is certainly in scope for traditional taxi and livery drivers - we use them all them time to courier stuff around the city.

It’s never occurred to me to use Uber for the same service, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

There's already Uber-eats and I am sure the services will expand for other non-people related tasks.
The OP said he gave him an extra $20, assuming on top of whatever the Uber ride itself cost out to the airport.
The driver already had an engaged fare in the OP, so why not continue it, if he was happy to go that way? Versus waiting on a new fare.

Personally I would have just left the clubs at the hotel - or even Fedex/Shipsticks them from there - but we don't know the specific details of the OP's itinerary.

i did ask and he said no problem without any hesitation. i told him to keep the fare going (i changed the drop off location after he dropped me off at my meeting).

if he did feel insulted, i would have sensed it and would have apologized and not had him do it.

shipsticks is a great option.. matter of fact, during my last business trip with a round of golf, i used shipsticks on the route home. but even with shipsticks, i put on the tsa lock since the bag just sits in the pro shop until ups comes later in the day or the next day.

It was Larry Sellers.  He lives near the In & Out on Radcliffe.  He's breaking his father's heart.  The kid was flunking history anyway.

Or the TSA.  Definitely the TSA.

Hmm, this is pretty interesting.  Are you 100% sure driver and 3 wood made it back from the course?  i.e. they were in there when bag was given to the bell hop?

If you had detachable heads, then they should have been removed and in a side pouch with the head-covers on them (damage protection), with the shafts in the bag.

I'd suspect someone at the airport who had "behind the scenes" access to the bag between the point where it was dropped off at a counter to the time it was loaded on the plane. TSA oversight is pretty much nil at private terminals, and the suspect probably figured "rich JetSuiteX passenger can easily afford to replace them" and would be unlikely to cause a huge fuss over the theft, not to mention it wouldn't be discovered until the victim was hundreds of miles away.

i am not sure who took your bag and i am sorry for your loss. I find it odd that they only took your driver and 3 wood. A thief is a thief is a thief and being kind of dishonest or taking the time to steal 2 clubs instead of the whole set strikes me as obscure. I am trying to wrap my head around the move.

If you care about it, don't let it out of your sight.  Use ship sticks or rent a ups store box for a week.  Ship it to the ups store, pick up your bag.  Drop it off when you leave town.  Pay your UPS label.  Maybe even ship the bag out a day early so you can see it's actually been scanned into the UPS system and is on the way.

OR

buy a Cello (the instrument) Case.
Tell people you are in a Cello band.  Perfect Disguise!
Just kidding
