EXACTLY!!

Oh Christ, donít get me started on Harvard MDs

Growing up under the roof of a surgically trained one(surgical residency & one surgical fellowship), which is worse than just being Harvard educated(med school), has scarred me for life

He was a great Mentor and I do thank God for the genes but if ya ever gave thought as to why Iím such an arsehole, lololol, think no more

Iím more thankful for my Mother & Madison

Ask Madison to tell ya about the first time that she met him after she walked off the 18th with a 66(par 70) in our inter-club where she and another female Pro Played the blues(6790) while we guys Played BoBs(Back of Box, 6980yds)

My Father, who was riding along in a cart with a Bud following different groups, went up to her, introduced himself and asked her to step over on the practice green with him as heíd noticed something in her putting stroke and could help

One, she putted excellently, two, she didnít ask for ďhelp,Ē and three, while Pete had told her that I could be an arsehole, he never told her about my father

They get along fabulously though, lolol

A Happy & Healthy to You & Yours Bro
Richard

Haha. Thatís funny. Fathers of our generation could be tough. I had one, too. (Would give anything to walk one more round of golf with him. He had big time polio in 1954, lost total use of his arms, and then taught me every poorly understood idea of Hoganís swing. But man do I think of those days on the course with the two of us walking together with great love for him)

This woman, however, was wonderful. Just very damn smart.

Ok thatís way way way off topic and not fair to ebrasmus.
Memories for a lifetime!!

80%+ of my posts are waaaaaaaaay off the rails, in the woods, lol

All Ebras or anyone has to do is post something, lol😉

Happy New Year🍾

Cheers🍻

Well, this has been an interesting read!  I am quite surprised that I did not come across this sooner.  The reason why I find this so interesting, is that my game was exactly where yours was when you started this thread.  I was in shank hell for a large part of last year and beginning of this year.  It got to the point where I did not enjoy going out to play golf anymore, and would think of any excuse in the world to try and cancel my regular Wednesday game.  My shanking was mostly with mid to short irons.  I would tee off with a hybrid so that I could hit a longer club into the green.

A couple of comments; firstly, I will never be as tall as you!  Secondly, I will never be as young as you!  Thirdly, although I was down to a 8 handicap for a very short time, I have been in the low teens for most of my golf career which started far too late in my life.  Having said that, I will never have that swing that you have! Your swing certainly looks great, keep up the good work. It really looks like a scratch capper.

Having said all that, I am glad that you have found the path that you are on.  I took a lesson from Monte several years ago.  Unfortunately, I live in the Pacific Northwest and I was fortunate enough to have a friend live in the vicinity.  I went for a golf holiday and a lesson.  It was a great experience [I did not have to eat McDonald's], and I stopped reading any tips or instruction except for Monte's.  I pride myself on reading everything about the golf swing and believe that I have at least average knowledge of the technique and the science behind it all.  Unfortunately, you do sometimes have to have someone look at your swing, especially if you were in the hole that I was in.  I was so lost in the shanks, that I finally found an instructor up here late in the summer.  One lesson has been an eye opener and my shanks are gone for the most part.  In fact, a lot of what he told me has translated to the rest of my game.  I was struggling to break 90 and I am now heading down in the right direction.

Anyhow, not to derail your thread, I will be following this with interest.  Our golf season is now at a standstill for the most part.  Today was a potential golf day with sunshine and temperatures in the high 40s(F).  However, we have had so much rain that everything is a sloppy mess.  Looks like rubber mats and rubber tees for the next few months, bah!

So, Iíll be seeing Monte in a couple of weeks and I have two lessons scheduled.  After that Iíll be in PHX for the clinic later this month.  Iíll have blown through my lessons-budget for 2019 before the end of February but I think itíll be worth it.  Really excited to receive some more instruction and maybe if Iím super polite and respectful to Monte heíll let me see what this boditrak nonsense is all about ;)

Game is at a stand-still.  Ball striking doesnít seem to be improving much lately but maybe this is a period of time where Iím regressing some before improving.  Instructors say that improvement isnít linear and that is definitely the case with me.  Handicap hasnít been lower than 5 in quite some time.

Through the frustrations Iíve seen little glimmers of hope.  Shot 77 the other day playing the par 5ís in +3 along with having two 3 putts in the round.  That round was right in front of me ready for the taking but I let it get away from me.  Happens all the time.

During my upcoming lessons and the PHX clinic Iím especially interested in learning how to practice.  Still think my practice sessions could be much more effective than they are.

2018 was basically a total golf overhaul for me.  Hoping 2019 wonít require as much heavy lifting - we shall see what Monte has to say.  I feel like Iím poised for a breakthrough in my game and then I promptly go out and throw up all over the course.  Not giving up, my addictive personality and stubbornness wonít let me.

the course is beautiful and peaceful at sunrise.

Today shot an all time personal best of 74.  Pretty good considering it rained quite a bit last night and today was cold and windy.  Not sure where it came from as I've been playing pretty bad lately.  Some things that stick out:

- Putted *not* looking at the ball.  If I was inside 10' I looked at the cup.  For longer putts I picked a focal point roughly 8'' in front of the ball and made my stroke.  Had 30 putts today which I think is a record for me

- Didn't really have swing thoughts like I normally do.  Did my best to just swing the club and not cloud my mind.

- Changed my grip some by weakening my left and right hand slightly.
  > this video gave me the thought of trying a little weaker grip: https://youtu.be/7c5ieJAfDx4

- Off the tee and most other full swings I was really trying to focus on "swinging towards my target" rather than "swing at the ball"

- Got a number of good strikes in today.  Even when I missed the green it was still a compressed strike

Anyways, thanks everyone that has shared in this journey with me.  Today was fun accomplishing something I've never done before - hopefully today will lead to more good scores.

Thanks DD!

Grint is pretty solid as far as I'm concerned.  Pretty robust stat trackers, easy to use and data input is extremely fast (which I'd say is the best feature).

I hope those reading the thread learn from this.

There was elation, desperation, confusion and ending in celebration.

Improvement is not linear, you can only make it point in the right direction and not deviate during the valleys in the curve as long as the trend is up.

DD, rich s, cardoustie, Obee and Monte - thanks for the kind words.

Obee - to answer your question yes I did get nervous after making birdie on 15 because I knew I was in unfamiliar territory.  As you can see from my score card I got off to my usual slow start... didn't think much was going to happen but I stuffed one on 6 and on 8 I hit this nice cut 8 iron around a tree then rolled in the 20 footer for bird.  Got it back to +1 at the turn which is quite good for me.  I got pretty focused at that point and just wanted to make controlled smooth swings.

#13 is one of the most difficult holes on the course - green is tiny and severely sloped.  It was playing down wind to a front flag.  I chose to hit a soft 9 rather than hitting a full-bore PW.  Nutted the smooth 9 and it ended up on the back edge of the green.  Speed speed speed all the way down to the pin where I lagged it to about 6' but missed it coming back.

#15 I hit a nice drive and was close enough to go for it.  Pulled my 3w left of the green pin high in the mud.  Hit a nice lofted mud ball to about 20 or 25 feet and made that putt for bird.  Getting nervous now for sure.

#16 pulled my tee shot but had an opening through the trees and hit a nice wedge to 10' - now I'm feeling the pressure being in position to get it to +1 through 16....  Missed the put.

#17 I swung at the ball and blocked it right.  Hit a lovely chip and just had a tap in.

#18 Little juiced up on the tee (below was my drive that day).  Was in between clubs for my second shot and I knew I didn't want to go long so I hit 7 and made an aggressive swing.  Turned it over some and it ended up going long anyways, lol.  Had an impossible chip, nothing really to work with and finished with a par.  After that drive I had some delusions of grandeur thinking I was going to eagle in and shoot under par.  Probably lost focus a touch and let that hole get away from me.

Monte made a good point, big picture, regarding my journey.  He used the words elation, desperation, confusion and celebration.  Desperation and confusion have reigned supreme for most of this journey but there has certainly been some elation and some celebration as well.  The line towards improvement is not straight.

It's been fun following along, and useful for me as well. It gives me something to relate to as well as aspire to. I know I have had a couple good rounds going where nerves crept in and/or my mentality shifted to a state of "don't screw up". Which promptly caused me to botch my final hole(s).

I'm so excited for spring to get here so I can start practicing outside.

Well not quite a Kardashian but close.

When I got to the lesson I was hitting shots fat and Monte could tell I wasn’t getting pressure to my left side early enough.

Worked on the “slide” “drift” “fall” into the lead side leg to get pressure forward.  The feel was just adding flex to the lead knee between p3-p4.  Basically I need to work on getting pressure left earlier in my swing.

Doing this made swinging faster possible without trying.  Like free speed.

Also helps with low point control and consistency of strike.

A very good and very simple lesson with Monte to help make improvements possible.

Nice move.  That lead knee is quite different, better, than your December videos - more out to the toes and not so much inward . Your lead knee used to get past your ankle in the downswing and make it hard to push back up - getting that pressure left early clears that up.

That leg is straight versus still bent at about the same follow thru position - easy speed, indeed.

Love me some Los Serranos. 18 is such a great ending hole; I like the other course a tad more though because of the length but overall, Los Serranos is fantastic!

Whoops, wrong course! haha, great read here though!

This is when you know you've made it.  I think I hit a bunker shot once on his IG.  To say it was the highlight of my golfing career would be an egregious understatement.

All this time I thought my slim legs were holding back my swing speed - another excuse debunked!  Great speed and great move!

Thatís farther and. faster than me.  Not cool and I let him know it.  I demand some regression to a level below me.

Maybe that should be my marketing play.  ďIíll make you hit it farther than me, then you can taunt me on the internet.Ē

I'll be honest you guys, when Monte said he'd make me famous I go juiced up a little bit.  Fame is wonderful ;)

Getting the body to move efficiently is truly an incredible thing.  I hit very few balls during our lesson; we mostly talked about feels and ideas and made slow motion swings to get my brain to understand what was going on.  I did *not* swing hard with those 7irons it was just a swing.  It's not to be braggadocios either because I had no idea that was going to happen - it just did and it did because Monte got me to be more efficient.

That's why I made the comment that it was free speed - it just happened without trying to force it.

By the way - thanks everyone for the kind words.  A couple more quick points:
  • Guy, for anyone to buy my cosmetics line in no particular order I'd need to get a boob job, butt job, lip job, grow my hair out and shave my legs at a bare minimum - I'll leave the makeup business to the Kardashians
  • Ferris - looking forward to meeting you.  I think PHX is going to be a great time.
  • Hawk - we need to embrace our slenderness.  I used to have a little more mass on me but sitting at a desk all day isn't good for being jacked.... which I never was in the first place
  • Pepsi - highlight of my career for sure ;)
  • rich s - feeling is mutual my wrx friend

I didn't dare taunt Monte.  That's a battle I'm not ready for.

LOL, notice how I just mentioned my legs! Not carrying as many pounds as two years ago, but more work to do - my desk is huge, lots of room for all sorts of very early morning bakery items and bad lunches. :-)

Love these progress threads in general however they go, but nice to see guys enjoying success!
