I purchased a used mizuno jpx 850 hybrid, I generally get on quite well with it but Iíve notice it produces some strange ball flights

Occasionally on a decent strike which goes straight the ball seems to dive down like a shot with top spin in tennis. What causes this?

I know golf shots donít have top spin but could this be a knuckle ball with too little spin and speed to stay in the air so it quickly falls out the sky?

Iíve never seen anything like it even playing partners have commented on the strange flight, itís not something that happens often and seemingly at random

Must be the shockwave sole in action :) ..... check out the bottom of your hybrid , there is shockwave sole to increase bouncyness or increase ball speed. Nothing you can do about it.

I’m Not sure but I am certain it has nothing to do with the shockwave sole.

Pikachu, are you trolling or are you being serious?  So many of your posts make no sense.  I cant quite figure out your angle yet.

Is the sound of center strikes on that hybrid consistent?

The only knuckling I've ever experienced came from cracked heads...

I had a 4wood that started doing this, the face was caved in just slightly. The ball would knuckle and then fall out of the sky. Check the face. Not sure if the grooves have paint or not but you might have to remove the paint to check the grooves for cracks.

What's the deal with the shaft and how much has it been tipped. I once bought a driver shaft that was tipped 2" and I couldn't keep it in the air.

This is another good point. Over tipping a shaft can cause this.

From what I understand it's caused by a lack of spin, which I believe can be caused by the head, shaft or ball or a combination of all of these.  I demoed a Wilson F5 hybrid in 20° that all af the well struck shots just flew relatively low and fell out of the sky. I was told that it was a hybrid with the weight close to the face and was designed for very low spin....never experienced that flight with any other hybrid.

Is it a lack of spin issue?

Read in Golf Monthly (UK Golf Magazine) that Eddie Pepperell was suffering from a similar issue until working on a new driver and the issue was that he wasn't generating enough spin so the ball was dropping out of the air.

Sounds like to low of spin. If it's at the range it could be caused by the ball, particularly the bald ones with barely any dimples

Some months ago...I got a 10.5 SLDR with a real deal Oban Kiyoshi White for $100 CDN on a lark but played it only a few times because I'm naturally a lowish spin player and combined with that I get balls that drop straight down from the sky like a shot duck.

Yes...too low a spin would do that, especially with low swing speeds..

I had a new Cleveland XL custom back in 2012.
It had an X stiff shaft.
When I would  hit it, the ball fell like a sack of potatoes.
I would find my ball in the fairway within 3 foot of the ballmark where it landed.
A guy was watching  me on the range one time and said it was losing  spin.
I switched out shafts and that helped, but the head  was low spin.
After going to a Cobra driver, my drives went back to normal.

Synopsis of what the problem is likely to be:

-cracked clubhead
-combination of low spin head and low spin shaft
-shaft tipped to where it's not playable
-shaft wrong for you (low spin player combined with low spin shaft)

I have had shots like that when I am hitting up on my driver and catch it very low/almost miss the bottom of the face.

The ball takes off and then nose dives out of nowhere

Usually low to no spin on the ball-  regardless of what the problem is, cracked head (interesting thought about a crack in the shock wave), shaft issue, etc, doubt it is anything to fix in a club that is not adjustable.  Unfortunately, move on.
