Inspired a little by Jordan-Kobe thread :)

I say Yankees losing 3-0 lead to the Red Sox in 2004.

Bruins giving up 2 goals with a minute left is pretty close.

I think its tough to say golf. One bad hole can end it
But baseball. The yankees could lose 3 times and still win the series and they couldn't do it.

It could, but thatís not what happened to Norman. It was a slow leak all the way down the back 9. Gave up ten strokes to Faldo with nothing worse than a double.

A choke? It was 17-14. One of the best super bowls there was. Plus, Manning's forward momentum was stopped and he should have been ruled down on the Tyree play.

Challenge with that one is the Warriors won vs OKC down 3-1 in the same playoffs....So it happens

28-3 in the super bowl is bad

But i think the alltime biggest choke was the Houston Oilers blowing a 35-3 lead against the BACKUP quarterback of the Bills (Frank Reich) in the playoffs. I mean, how do you top that?

As a Bills fan I have to admit the Bills choked against the Giants in Super Bowl 25.  They were the better team that season and should have won the game and people will target Scott Norwood specifically for missing the kick but it should have never come down to that the Bills were that much more talented that year.  They got completely outcoached and the players partied way too hard the entire week and it showed in the game by how gassed they looked.

Yes it was a huge choke! Undefeated, possibly greatest team of all time Patriots losing to a 10-6 Regular Season Wild Card team. If that's not a choke I don't know what is.

To me, a choke has to involve a clearly superior athlete / team playing uncharacteristically badly to lose a game.

The Patriots / Giants doesn't meet that, because while the Patriots were a better team, the margin wasn't as wide as you'd like to think. They almost lost to the Giants in the last game of the regular season (trailing 16 - 28 in the 3rd quarter, and 23 - 28 in the 4th quarter before eventually winning by 3); and the Giants beat them in the Super Bowl. They didn't lose, they got beat.

I would actually put the most recent Super Bowl with the Malcolm Butler fiasco ahead of that one as a Patriots "choke".

No, no, and no. Everyone at the time was arguing whether this was the best football team of all time. They lost to a wild card team. How is that not a choke??

It's not the case that every time a favorite loses, they "choked".

IMHO it doesn't respect the Giants - who flat out beat the Patriots.

No most of the time that's not the case but in this instance it absolutely is. They had no business losing that game.

That Giant team beat the Bucs, Cowboys, and Packers in the post season

Every game on the road

Then, they went to the SB, rung Bradys bell a few times and, as he tends to do, Brady freaked out. They held NE to 270 total yards.

Did you see the game, btw?

"Choke" is over-used in team sports -- usually a team simply gets out played. Norman at Augusta, however. That was the all-time classic choke. Watching him fidget, gripping and regripping the club. That was just painful.

The Buckner error on that harmless ground ball in the series against the Mets stands out to me as well.

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but the 1999 British Open and Jean van de Velde comes to mind when I think choke.

That's a good one about the RedSox. Mainly because of the length of time in which it occurred and as you noted the fallout from it. What I don't remember and had to look up is shortly after Papelbon blew a save to lose to the Orioles in the last game of the season, the Rays rallied back from being down 7-0 in the 7th to win and clinch the wild card spot. Wild season.
