surely inside over the top swings can't win on tour.. :)

guy's swing is really not much different from most you see on a public course..goes to show... doesn't have to be perfect.  chipping and putting has to be close to perfect on tour

It doesn’t have to “look perfect” but it has to be perfectly repeated time after time and then it is perfect.

Most of the people I encounter on courses public or otherwise would give valuable pieces of their anatomy to hit the ball like he does, and what over the top?

He's clearly learned body rotation towards the target minimizes hooks

Golf history is full of winners with grooved funky swings

So freakin' true. When you see the Kenny Perrys and Ray Floyds of the world, you need to run the other direction.

I'll take 10 million reps of targeted idiosyncrasy over 1 million reps of robotic, aesthetic precision any day.

I play a lot of golf with a soon-to-be-17-year-old kid who kept texting me about Potter's swing. (This kid has a ridiculously nice swing, hits envious positions at all the key checkpoints, and strikes a great ball.)

"How's [his swing] win?"

"It's sooooo ugly."

"Still the ugliest swing on tour."

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here when I say aesthetics and swing positions are being considered and obsessed over to the detriment of actually playing the damn game!

Look at Lydia Ko. I could have provided her with Hall of Fame advice a couple of years ago: "Don't change a damn thing, EVER."

If you can get it done with your swing, you can get it done. As long as you can hit the shot you need to hit—and have the confidence to step up and pull it off—you've got everything you need to win on the golf course.

Every time a guy like Ted Potter, Jr. wins, it's like a cold shower of absolute truth. You don't need to look like an adonis at P3-P6; you don't need to be a 6'4" mutant; you don't need to drive it 350.

You just need to be able to hit it where and how you want.

And thank goodness for that.

It may not look the best, but he owns it and is able to be in the right spot at impact which is ultimately the only thing that matters.

Huh? 46 is common. Basically standard length for a driver these days. Many guys prefer shorter but I doubt 46 is rare.

No pictures on a score card. Yes the swing is ugly but it got the job done. If I could shoot 60's at Pebble, I wouldn't care how it looked.

Also, what his average drive all week was no more than like 285? Ball speeds in the low to mid 160's... DJ blowing it by him on every single par 4 and 5. Yet, the guy's short game was clutch, where length means nothing and pulled out a W.

I might not have the best eye so what am I missing that so many others are seeing in his swing? These positions all look pretty good to me.

screen-capture-1.png

And I don't think there are more than 1 out of every couple hundred guys who come through my local courses with a swing this good. It looks very different from all of theirs to my untrained eye.

There's been a whole lotta talk this week about how awful his swing is and, other than the unique follow through, I don't see what's so terrible here.

I don't think people think it's a bad swing, technically speaking. As you show.. position is good. It's more of... it just looks jerky and almost somewhat.. painful. Very fast and short... Not super smooth and elegant looking. People love an Ernie Els or Fred Couples swing because it looks completely effortless and the ball gets crushed. TPJ looks like he's trying to hit the cover off the ball every single time.

About the only thing I see is he does have a funky follow through but I too wouldn't put this down as an ugly swing - certainly not when you look at Jimenez, Barber, or Floyd as examples - those 3 guys get into some of the worst backswing postions I've seen and make world class transition moves - the rest of us would be lucky to be 18 cappers with their backswings.

I think what throws people off about his swing is the follow-through. He really slams on the brakes and comes to an abrupt stop rather than finishing with club ove his shoulder. It gives the jerky appearance that people are talking about. Whatever works. My swing will never be pciture perfect and I really don't care. It's all about strike.

not sure anyone is doggin' his impact...it was more his swing (I think).  Yes his swing is nothing you would teach.....because you couldn't.  With only seeing his swing and not the result....yes....its sucks.    The guy is a complete natural.......refreshingly awesome!!......(by virtue of his result :) ).

Ive been waiting for the inevitable thread where people with what they think are similar swings used Potters swing to justify their swings.

His swing is not similar because where it matters it is tour caliber. Dont let appearances fool you ( OTT swingers with all of the stereotypical faults) or lull you into a sense of contentment.
