What is the general consensus when it comes to 3-wood launch dynamics?

I know the rule of thumb for a driver is high launch low-spin, however what should people look for in the 3-wood?

Should you look for low launch (13.5 degree 3+ wood) with a higher spinning shaft, or high launch (15 degree 3 wood) with a low spinning shaft, as you typically would in a driver.

It'll be interesting to hear people thoughts on this...

I go mid-launch mid-spin. I personally don't get the benefit of having super low spin on a 3-wood, as crazy low-spin tends to get me in trouble with the driver. With my 16.5 915f and my 80g B Series, I have no doubt I'm leaving 5 yards on the table, but it's becoming a super reliable club off tie tee when I need to stay in the fairway and 250 is an acceptable distance. I recently tried out the 917f2 and saw no real distance gains (despite an apparent 200rpm decrease in spin), and prefer the 915f shape, so I stuck with it.

Control and confidence are the names of the game here IMO.

I'm a high ball hitter and I have a 15 degree 3 wood with a low spinning shaft. If I need to hit it lower and have it run, I can play a going draw with it. A normal off the deck shot will hold a green. I used to carry a stronger 3 wood but no longer. I never understood, looking back of course, on why I had a stronger one. 15 is very versatile.

I am just now ditching my low spin Sub Zero 3W as it just doesn’t work when needed. Mis hits go short, and it’s just not worth the flight risk. I was getting incredible ball speeds and nice roll, but 1700-2100 is just not good for me. Switching to a Ping G 3W with great launch, forgiveness, goes straight, and spins 3k-3400. Would have liked to find something in between, but when it carries consistently and is easy to hit you kind of stop getting too picky.

I'm also a mid/mid but I tweak my lofts between 13* & 15.5 depending on the length of the par 5s and the firmness of the fairways. I'll play higher loft on firm fairways, because of the added roll-out. But if the par 5s are over 650 yds I need all the length I can get.

Great question.

Iím a mid launch mid spin guy in a 15*. I can hit a 13* as well but itís almsot redundant in pushing the driver.

My personal observance is guys who can hit 3 woods well tend to be decent players and generally will have a mid launch shaft and higher swing speed tend to be high kick point shafts.

To me, itís an oxymoron to have a low kick point 3 wood shaft because a segment struggling to launch a 3 would do better in a 4 wood or strong hybrid.

You can search a dozen nonsense threads on how guys cannot hit a 3 wood lol and propagate 4 woods and 17* hybrids.

A shallow faced low launching armor piercing bullet would be the ticket in a 3 wood for me personally. Nothing wrong with zeroing one in off the tee, just tee it up a little lower. The deep faced 3 woods are over rated. Just my preference.

I have  dodged this problem by using a 17deg 4W with the stock stiff shaft. Easy enough to elevate from the ground and not too much distance loss from the tee. But I am a high spin player anyway so...

It comes down to what it is going to be used for. A max distance from the deck / back up to your driver then the low spin option is the way to go. These things go nearly as far as a driver now. For positional play or approach shots to par 5's it makes no sense to have a low spin option as the knuckle ball that goes 15 yards further can be a card wrecker.

It's the hardest spot to fill in the bag because there is a fine line between too much spin and not enough.

It also depends on how someone hits a driver, if they are not optimised, I.e. hit down on it then there is a good chance the gap between driver and 3 wood will be small.

I've played 3-4-5 woods from 20* to 13.5*, the best results came from the 4 wood at 16.5*, then my current player 3 wood at 14.5*, I get the forgiveness and accuracy from the 4 wood then add the distance from the 3 wood, I have been playing the best I have in a while, teeing off with the 3 wood and getting over 250y straight and forgiving is the best feeling ever...

Epic SZ.5w set 1* strong (17*) with 42.5" shaft gives me all the length I need in an easier to elevate Fairway wood.

I use a 13.5 degree 3 wood primarily off the tee although I can hit it decently off of the turf. It is fairly low spinning I guess but I hit it high.

I like a mid-launch w/ mid-spin combo like what I have.

To me, 3-wood is so much about good contact and letting the club do the work. I don't want to balloon one a mile high and let the wind, or the curvature caused by me take it way off line. I also don't want to launch a bullet out that has zero chance of holding a green.

Tensei Pro Blue, Graphite Design AD DI, and Hzrdus Handcrafted Red are the best I've found so far in doing this.

Is there an optimal 3W spin rate based on SS? I swing the 3W about 91-92 mph and the Epic SZ at 14.5* would launch very nice and roll but was spinning in the 1900-2100 range. Any mishit and the thing would drift badly, or be really short. The Ping 3W I just picked up launches very straight, even on mishits at 14.5*, but spins about 1k rpm higher. It is obviously shorter because of this but much easier to hit. Sacrificing about 15 total yards for a bit better off the deck. Maybe dropping to 13.5* setting will gain a few more yards and lower spin a bit without sacrificing the easy to launch nature.

Is the sweet spot somewhere in between there?

My 815 3 wood has the weight set for high launch.
I only  hit it off of a tee, or from a good lie.
From a tight lie the other woods are used.

Go for best contact first.

Iíve hit two dozen 3 woods before I settled on my steelhead xr Tensei Blue.

Personally, a 3 wood is about vicinity to target not launch and spin rate lol

Wish I would have read this thread about two months ago.  I put a ADTP7x into an Epic 13+. I had it butt trimmed to 42.5".  Because I live in the great white north I won't get to hit off turf for a few months yet. After reading this I would have looked more closely at the launch/spin question.
