Anyone playing the Taylormade P790’s and struggling with distance on the pitching wedge. 9 iron consistently 165 but pitching wedge feels dead and only going 135-140. C-taper light X flex.

Agreed, there’s 5° between the PW to 9i and the 9i to 8i. All things being equal the yardage gaps should be similar.

While I would 100% check the lofts, I will say that this was my exact experience when I demoed them. I hit the full set on a GCQuad.

PW and GW went 140 and 125 (normal for me), while I was hitting the 7/8/9 around 200/180/165

The gapping was all over the place.

90-95ss on 6-iron if that helps. It was the stock shaft in x-flex.

I asked what was going on to a TM rep and they said it happened sometimes with people who had a bunch of swing speed and some wrist flip (my biggest flaw). I guess the lower/strong lofted irons are just affected way less by adding some loft in the swing and maintain better ball speeds with less spin.

They are insane long in the longer irons, but the short irons are really no different than any other set.

If I were to get them, I would bend the long irons a degree or so weak, and the mid irons probably 2 weak.

I think this would be the one of the main downsides to playing distance irons.

A clubfitter and a teaching pro both told me that the P790 irons go too far for most of the tour pros. This translates to a big gap between their wedges and the numbered irons.

A single-digit amateur says he uses a P790 3i as the bridge club between his 3W and his main iron set (4i and up).

You may have something wrong with the 8 iron as well.  I was smoothing an 8 iron out to 205 at Dicks Sporting Goods, no problem.

Start removing set screws and checking goo levels.

Just bend the PW strong until you get the yardage you want out of it.  Height should not be an issue with these heads.  I would assume a degree or 2 would get you what you need.

UPDATE- I contacted Tyler at Puetz Golf in Seattle, who in turn contacted TM. Long story short. TM is building and shipping a new wedge out today directly to the house. GREAT customer service from both Puetz and TM.

I had the same issue. I ordered a set with 4-7 in 790 and 8-pw in 730 bent to march the 790 loft and it has been an awesome set up

What was your PW bent to and lifts of wedges?
Im always worried about gaps.  I like nice even progression through the bag.

... I posted this in the P790 thread, but I bought a 2nd set and these are the specs measured on my Mitchel LL machine with the actual lofts the second number:

P ... 45/64 45/64
9 ... 40/63.5   40/63.5
8 ... 35/63 36/62.5  (1* weak and 1/2* flat)
7 ... 30.5/62.5   30/63 (1/2* strong and 1/2* up)
6 ... 26.5/62  26/62  (1/2* strong)
5 ... 23.5/61.5   23.5/61.5
4 ... 21/61 20.5/62  (1/2* weak and 1* up)
3 ... 19/60.5 19/60.5

... If I were not re-shafting and was going to play them out of the box there would be some gapping issues between the 8 and 9 but even more so between the 8 and 7 with a 6* difference. Should be 5* gaps for the pw-7 so 4* and 6* would definitely create a gapping problem.  I did find my pw to be a little dead initially playing 3/4 shots with some finesse but finally figured out it just needs to be hit aggressively and problem solved, at least for me. Yes, at 5* the gaps are a little more than I have played for 35 years but consistent and after about 50 rounds I feel very comfortable with them.
