It is worth noting that both his playing partners made the cut (and were Monday qualifier I assume) one finished t16 the other t20.

... But I still feel sorry for them....

While I do feel sorry for whoever had to play with him, the decision to let him in is the sponsors. Regardless of how he got the exemption, it's their choice who gets it.

For those who care about the translation, in short ( because I don't want to get any of his game to get onto me):

I've been working on my dream over in Florida for about 4 yrs, I played in the event not thinking I would win but to get experience, I thank those who support me and respectfully, to those who attacked me on social networks, I received an invitation based on past merits,  it was not part of a negotiation. It's also not a crime to play poorly (the way he did it, it's debatable), I apologize for my performance, this has been the one of the most important ones in my short career, and it propels me to continue playing and chasing my dream.

So, there you have it, YOU CAN'T STOP THE MACHINE!!!!!!

While I agree that sponsor's should be able to use their exemptions as they see fit, it also seems like they should have some sort of duty to make sure that the exemption isn't going to be too much of a hindrance to their fellow competitors.

Imagine your chasing your dream and you finally make it through a Monday qualifier and then have the bad luck to get paired with someone like this? It sounds like his playing partners did make actually make the cut, which is pretty impressive to me.

Sponsors should invite who they want, but maybe stick them in their own group if they aren't competitive ...

Wasn't there a player who shot some crazy number last year because he injured his arm but had to finish the event to get FedEx point to get into playoffs, so he finished his final (two?) rounds swing one handed

Maybe something happen to this poor "machine"?

If you’re a professional golfer (not a golf pro, big difference) and your game is dictated by the way your playing partner is playing then you need to find a day job, because you’re not going to make it.  .....and it seems like his player partners both made the cut so good for them.  If they were paired with whoever was leading the tourney in the first two rounds would’ve they played better???  Probably not.

I’m sure he does now!  As a rep you are looking at one number and that’s the Darrel survey and last I checked they don’t put scores up on there.

Cut a deal, then go into the tour van and demand to be fitted, "I'm topping out at around 102 with my driver, but I'm sure that Trackman is wrong,  what you got for me?"

"I'll take this putter, and this other putter. Hey, what you got for putts missing on the low side?" ok, here's a new mallet...

Repeat.

It pays for itself.

nobody said a bad playing partner would dictate a players score, just that it’s a pain in the butt that nobody else in the event had to go through

It doesn't really matter who he was or how good a golfer he is because the sponsors that are paying for the entire event decided they wanted to guy to play. Many times they put a celebrity in or someone who benefits the event in some way but can't really compete with the pros. If you are paying the for the entire event you get to call the shots.

From what I heard on xm, he paid someone to get that exemption...not exactly an invite.

Sucks if true but will say these sponsors have way too much pull on the PGA and Web tours tbh.  Yeah it always comes down to $ but at least give the sponsor exemptions to real golfers.

How do you take power away from sponsors without risking losing them and sending the tour(s) back to the old days of support? It only takes one big sponsor bad mouthing the a tour to run off others potentially. It's even riskier for the smaller feeder tours. I imagine they don't have much wiggle room when it comes to sponsors

I'f I'm running the PGA/Web.Com tour, I'd do something to try and nip this stuff in the bud. You don't want to overly dilute your brand by having absolute jokes getting in the field.

Giving exemptions to  ex or  current pro athletes is a completely different kettle of fish. I actually thin that kind of exposure is good for the tours, since it increases the attention AND show how freakin hard the sport is.
