And we learned quickly that we were completely safe walking around the target greens picking up the balls, the pros would just work around us, completely controlled.

Unlike when my group of hacks are playing.  The safest place to stand when someone is hitting up is next to the flag.

A few more things have come to mind.  At the AT&T, something like 2/3 of the range balls were Titleist, either ProV1 or ProV1x.  There was a bit of drama when Jim Furyk realized that we didn't have the specific Calloway ball that he was playing.  It was a screw-up by the Calloway rep, but the volunteers at the range took the brunt of his displeasure.  Don't get me wrong, I don't think he said or did anything out of line, but he was clearly unhappy.

Last, MidSouth in Southern Pines, NC, has just gone to Titleist ProV1 practice balls.  I just happened to get paired with a golf-ball-QC rep from Titleist, who told me that they regularly equip a range with "practice" ProV1s, and may even re-supply them after a year, but generally no longer.  They'd found that once the members got spoiled, they'd insist on having the same balls, and the club would usually buy practice ProV1s by the hundred-dozen to keep the members happy.

Ha! Sounds like they're learning from the streets. Give them a taste, they'll be back for more...

I've seen in the past that each player uses their regular ball when they're on the range at tour events. Who supplies those? Does say Titleist bring a bunch of practice ProV's for their guys? And then when the range gets picked does somebody have to sit there and separate out each type of ball? Just curious

I worked the short game area during a PGA event last summer

I accounted for these balls and yes we had to separate them and put them bag in their color coded bags

Titleist, Srixon, Nike, Callaway, Taylormade, Bridgestone

I took my fair share of them home on Sunday as nobody really cared. The leftovers get boxed up and are sent back to the reps

Letís add to the fun. Players open their lockers to find their golf balls for the week, all in white, unmarked boxes.

These are the facts and they are not in dispute.

Cue theme from The Twilight Zone.

Brand new balls of your choice at every event? Seriously?!? I thought they were all the same? Like at the WGC Bridgeatone aren't all of the range balls Bridgestone balls? Maybe that's just an exception?

I bet the amateurs in the pro-am got to (or were forced to) hit Bridgestone range balls.  The pros, they get whatever they want.  And it wouldn't surprise me if Bridgestone provided the bags, and made sure their logo was shown.

I caddied for my dad during a pro-am pretty recently (less than 2 years ago) the players side of the range had a booth where caddies would go grab a bag of balls, and it was pretty much any brand/type they wanted separated by bag. The am's got the regular balls from a different booth and weren't allowed to use the players' range balls from the fancy players' booth lol

You know, I really think they should have to hit the old dimpleless range balls the rest of us do.

Perfect range balls, Perfect greens, Perfect bunkers.  Jeez, these guys should shoot 59 or better every single round.

They should be warming up having to wonder if that double breaking hook-then-slice they just hit was them, or was it that cracked golf ball that made a funny noise like the rest of us.

And they MUST have lift, clean and place in perfect conditions because pro golf. I'd love to see the proper big names play "normal" conditions.

Wonder if Web.com, LPGA and Champions tour get new range ball?

20 year ago the LPGA played a tournament at my home club and they were hitting the same range balls we used.

LPGA gets ProV1ís during tournament week. At least at my home club that was the case.

Over in the UK like most places you can pick up a box of 'Practice' balls which have been used at tour events.
The word 'Practice' is heavily stamped on them and therefore you cannot actually use them in a competitive round/competition.
Wondering state side is there no stamping on these (apart from brand etc)

Price wise usually 12 balls for £10 or so.

Pretty sure Titleist sells these as Practice balls, with 'Practice' stamped on each ball. http://www.golftown....15#.WnsDLBXyvb0

The ProV1 practice is conforming last time i checked.

Last year lostgolfballs.com got some from the Farmer's I believe. I got 12 dozen Callaway (mostly ChromeSoft varieties) for I think $10/dozen. Best deal I've ever gotten on a ball. Most were in great shape/brand new looking and they all had PRACTICE stamped but pretty small. I could completely cover it with my Sharpie line. Hoping they get another dump of those balls so I can increase my stock this year.

Maybe slightly off topic but I was lucky enough to play in the Pub Links when it was at Bandon Dunes and I walked up to the range the first day of the practice round to warm up. Behind this makeshift counter they created on the range was multiple tubs of balls and I thought nothing of it. I just thought it was a bunch of golf balls for the tournament. I asked for a bag of balls and they asked me if I wanted Pro V1 or Pro V1x and I was a little taken back. This was my first national tournament and didn’t expect treatment like that. Those balls were brand spanking new too. I think a lot of guys reacted the same way and these balls ended up in a lot of players bags.

One of the many reasons they are  $4 a ball.

Constant advertising and sponsorship of tournaments and paying pros to play them all costs a huge amount of money.

It’s certainly been a productive approach for them given their market share, MSRP, and rabid fan base.

I was a groupie for years. Reality finally set in a few years ago when I figured out there are now plenty of great balls to chose from at a better price.

Srixon XV’s have been in the bag since the $9.95  six ball promo packs last spring.  Have never been happier. Just loaded up with 10 more dozen.

This happened a few years ago, apparently someone was not too thrilled about Tiger practicing at the club (he had that moral high horse bs etc) and went downstairs into the bag storage area and stole all of Tigers practice balls. Now there's a bunch of security cameras downstairs and his practice balls are locked up each and every night.

After the 04 PGA at Whistling Straits the Nevada Bobs had a barrel of Titleists that were from that range and charged $1/ball.  It was interesting as a lot of the balls had a dime size scrape on them like it had hit asphalt. I didn't buy those,  just the clean ones.

This may come as a surprise, but some people do not play Titleist golf balls.

surprised a club like that doesnt have prov1s

they probably have some kind of a deal with Tayloemade..

PS: am also pretty sure the tour courses where he plays provide Tiger with the current Bridgestone balls he plays..

The word 'Practice' is heavily stamped on them and therefore you cannot actually use them in a competitive round/competition.
Yes you can. This has been discussed here and elsewhere numerous times. Golf balls labeled as "PRACTICE" are treated the same as a logo ball. They are legal in competition per the USGA/R&A. In certain circumstances X-Out balls are legal as well. This information should be pinned here somewhere.

https://www.usga.org...AQidx=16&Rule=5

Rule 5-1
Status of "X-Out" and "Practice" Balls
Q.May I use an "x-out" ball or a ball stamped with "Practice" to play a round of golf?
A.Our present policy provides that if the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect, a practice or logo ball may be used provided the other markings on the ball (i.e., pole and seam) correspond exactly to a ball listing on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls. Balls labeled with “PRACTICE” or a circled “P”, are essentially treated as a logo ball (such as a Mickey Mouse emblem). A player's name stamped on the ball is also acceptable. However, the original ball markings (i.e., pole and seam markings) must be readable in order for a Rules Official to determine whether that ball is on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. X-Out balls are not permitted to be used in any competition in which the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect. However, if neither of these Conditions are in effect, X-Out balls may be used because all balls are presumed to conform unless they have been tested and found not to conform or are obviously non-conforming (e.g., too small or too heavy). (See Decisions 5-1/4).

https://www.randa.or...rming-Ball-List
Q. What is the status of a ball marked ‘PRACTICE’?
A. In most cases, “practice” balls are simply listed, conforming golf balls that have been stamped “Practice,” in the same way that golf balls often feature a club or company logo. Such balls may be used even where the Committee has adopted the condition that the ball the player plays must be named on the List of Conforming Golf Balls.
