Hi,

Before you flame me, I know this is kinda a silly OCD-ish question, but I have to ask.

I recently bought a brand new Titleist 917F2 3 Wood from a Buy & Sell forum at a good price. Not too good to be true, but it was a good price. Around €140 Euro. When I got it and removed the plastic the paint looked kinda weird to me.

If you look carefully at the "Titleist" at my Wood you can se the paint in the the dot over the first i and in the bottom of the s and t the paint looks weird in the letters and is not painted correctly, like it should be.

Again, I know it's a huge World problem, but I have now seen a lot of photos from the Pros WITB section of Titleist players, and the paint on their Woods are spot on compared to my 3 Wood.

Here is my Wood: Posted Image

And here is how it should be (if you ask me): Posted Image

This made me think about maybe it's fake?

Not an expert in the least and wouldnít offer a final judgement BUT that paint fill looks wonky.  Something is up, whether itís poor factory quality control on an authentic club or a fake.

Also to me!

But the thing is, there was a little plastic bag with the Wood containing the small manual and the draw-weight and they look real to me?

If the Wood is real/authentic I'm about to mail Titleist Europe department and ask them! I know it's a small thing but I will ask for a replacement, lol.

I would read through this first and then compare yours.  To me, its suspect and they are all over the fake websites from China.

That looks like poor QC. Even a counterfeiter wouldnít screw up the dot on the i and the t that bad.

The dot above the I is way off in your fake photo, sorry supposedly fake photo, to go along with the S and the T. The paint fill is bad compared to my 917f2. Unless someone try to put more pain in there for some reason.

Does it have a serial number ?  If it does then I'd check with Titleist EU, perhaps they could confirm where this club was fist delivered to.  If it was delivered to Spain , then the seller was in Germany.....

The counterfeit are so good these days, even the pro shop could not tell the difference, but this photo showed really bad paint-fill , even worse than some of DIY first timer.  If it was still in the supposed OEM wrapper when you received it,  then....
I would take this and compare the color of the paint fill with a real one from your local pro shop.  The shades of the paint fill of the counterfeit is slightly off than the authentic one ( under the natural light and indoor lighting ).  I would not be surprised if a newbie doing the paint fill at the OEM contracted factory caused this issue.
Labor cost had been on a steady climb in China.

Besides the paint issue, the sole dots looks like they are significantly different places.

Update:

This morning I called the guy. I'ts 9:15 Am here now, and I know he is working today, so I called him and showed him the picture. And he was as surprised as me.

* The club was in the original Titleist wrapping when I received it
* The club has a serial no. engraved
* It also came with the small manual and the extra draw/fade weight, and it looks premium to me with the carbon look and + / - in both ends
* Active Recoil Channel is covered with a rubber insert
* It has a dot over the SureFit Hosel
* The seller showed me today the quality of inspection document with the same serial no.

So everything points towards, that this 3 Wood is real, but with pretty poor paintjob? But how can that even happen?

There is only one problem, and that is that the seller is working for a large sporting company, and they are ordering in large quantities, so he can't show me a receipt or purchase receipt for this 3 Wood, but he just got it as a "gift" from his Manager. But he insisted that this 3 Wood was real.

Would it even help and do I even have a chance with mailing Titleist and ask them if this can be real? I mean it's just a paintjob. But again. It shouldn't have these cosmetic errors if you ask me. But hoping for a new 3 Wood might be too much.

But Iím pretty sure itís not fake after inspecting it again. With serial no. equal to the document from Titleist.

But letís say itís real. What are the chances for getting a new 3 Wood just because of a cosmetic error like this? I bet they are pretty low.

Titleist would like to hear from you , pretty certain of this especially with the story of it came from a large chain store's order.

If the OEM confiscated the counterfeit, you could take it up with the seller.  If this is an authentic item with poor finishing quality control, you could get a replacement from the Titleist ( they could reject the item to the factory and cost them nothing , unless the way of doing business is different these days ).

Keep in mind, when OEM contracting out for components overseas, often there would be several contractors under the general contractor and there is no standardized quality control.  If the components came with the paint fill, then this would explained the paint fill issue.   Most OEM import products in component form to avoid paying the high tariff on completed products, then assembled here in the States.

It really is your call whether to contact the OEM for authentication or not.

Also want to tell a story ( not confirmed by yours truly in person ).  The counterfeiter overseas boast that several buyers from the States drop in to order large quantity of counterfeit golf clubs.  Usually drivers since they are the highest ticket item in the bag.  Then shipped to the States and the sellers would market the counterfeit as genuine products.  Some of these are not counterfeit, they are "overrun production" from OEM contract. so these would be in a sense "authentic" without licensed by the OEM.

I was told that Titleist have moved production to Vietnam. Maybe the change to a cheaper work force has had teething issues.

Well I will definitely mail Titleist and ask what they think about this small, but still pretty annoying issue. Let's wait and see what they say on Monday.

Thanks mate... I mailed them today with pictures and everything. I'm not hoping for anything, but curious about what Titleist will say.

I'll update here when I have any news.

New update:

The person who I mailed to from Titleist, had never seen such a bad paintjob, so they want the club back for inspection. He ordered a carrier to pick it up today, so let's see. He was pretty sure about they will give me a new head.

I'll get back when I have more news.

That looks much better than the first 3 Wood I received. Hard to see if there is any cosmetic errors on yours?
