Weeded through a lot of the discussion of the S20 over the past year when it was first released, but for those that have it and have updated all the software, what's the final verdict?  Worth $200?  I am not sure I care about shot tracking if it is cumbersome to use, but I like the simplicity of the S20, the battery life, the non-touch easy read screen (B&W), and the pedometer feature.

I just sold my Approach G6 because I had to constantly pull it out of pocket and sometimes while in the pocket it would turn off.  A simple watch is all I care for.  If the S20 gets a "No" verdict, what about the S1 S2, or S3?

Thanks.

I have the s20 and am very pleased with it. Excellent battery life, low profile, and easy to read and use.

I got one a few months ago.  I really do like it...  not perfect though.  I turned all the tracking stuff off too - I just wanted to look at my wrist and know the distance to front, middle and back of green.  Nothing more nothing less.  For that it works really well!  Sometimes I bend my wrist far enough that it depresses a button during my swing so the next time I look at the watch its asking me a question, that's really my only gripe.

Battery life is surprisingly good, maybe 7-10 days everyday wear between charges (only takes like 30 mins to charge).  Could probably play 2-3 rounds using the GPS on one charge.  I always get nervous and top it off before I play lol.  Once I played spontaneously and had 32% charge at tee off and though it would die for sure... well, it lasted the whole round!

I got it on sale for $149 at Dick's around cyber week so for that price I feel pretty good about it, I like it!  At $200...  tougher choice.  I was looking at lasers too, but the one I wanted was closer to $350-$400 so this was the more economical choice.  And its always on my wrist, no fussing around, no packing and unpacking.

My verdict is, no way I wear something that clunky on my wrist. If that's the form factor you want, get one of the little cheap square clip-on golf GPS. The only reason it would need to be on your wrist is if you want it to detect shots, right?

The X40 is a good piece of kit. The S20 looks like somebody's science project by comparison.

X40 also is a very good general-purpose fitness watch with rudimentary heart rate monitoring built in.

Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

If you are interested in a simple easy to read GPS unit, and you are considering the S20.  If you would prefer not to have something bulky and potentially distracting on your wrist.  I would highly recommend the Garmin Approach G10.  It has the same functionality as the S20, and because it isn't a watch it's usually on sale for significantly less.
I did a review of it against the Nikon Coolshot 20 on my YouTube Channel.

With the exception of the HR monitor, the s20 has all the same fitness functionality.

And while I like the touch screen of the x40 over the side push buttons of the s20,  for us older folks, the much smaller display of the x40 can make certain items unreadable w/o having to pull out the reading glasses.  So there are plenty of times I wish I got the s20 instead of the x40.  But that's just me.

I need glasses to read and was wondering if the text on the "watch" is large enough to read without glasses. For example, as I type this if I take my glasses off the text is fuzzy and I can't read one word. I wouldn't mind having one, but if I have to constantly be taking off and putting on my glasses I will pass.

Thanks everyone.  I will look the X40 and G20.  No really interested in the G10 as I had a G6 and didn't like that I had to pull it out each time I wanted to get yardage.  The potential of needing glasses to read the screen on the X40 is a concern as I need cheaters to read.  The G20 looks like the #'s are much larger and may work.

The form factor of the S20 on the wrist doesn't bother me.  i wear a pretty large watch now.

The main center yardage on S20 is displayed in a big font. Everything else would probably be reading glasses size for most people.

I’m a eyeglass wearer full time so never have the issue of taking them on and off to see things...just the issue during summer of taking them off and on to wipe the sweat off the lenses!

I also wouldn't think the primary numbers (time, yardage) would be a problem on the x40 - but then I don't need reading glasses to work on the computer like you do.

Used the x40 for a season and a half. I'd never in my life worn a watch regularly, so was worried the x40 would bother me.  After the second hole I never noticed it. Loved it overall, but the screen size was a little inconvenient. Not a deciding factor for me, but I eventually switched to a Garmin 935 for the more robust running/fitness features.

(The 935 is really a different class of watch, so not really relevant to this discussion.  But for the record I love it, and the giant screen is a major improvement for me vs the tiny x40 display.)

Thanks for your reply...I just don't want to have to rummage around in my bag for the glasses every time I need a yardage. If I drove a cart it would be easy to do.

I am sure you are correct, but if I wanted to see some of the "smaller" numbers, than it might be problematic.

Looks like a new offering is available from Garmin - the x10.  Haven't read all the details but looks like an x40 w/o the heart rate monitor and a thinner profile.

After closer look, it appears it's not an x40 w/o just the HR monitor, I don't see any mention of any of the fitness functionality.

But I agree, it's a nice clean look.   For the most part I like my x40 but the HR monitor does make it a bit 'chunky'.
