The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.  I've tried so many fairway woods over the years, and just can't hit them consistently.  My Apex 2H on the other hand is just money.  It might not be quite as long as a fairway wood, but it's a heck of a lot more consistent and accurate.  Even misses are FAR better.  It's time to stop torturing myself and just replace the FW with my Apex 2H (for good) and call it a day

I went Driver to 3h all season and while it wasn’t terrible, there were more than a handful of times the hybrid wasn’t enough off the tee or enough into a par 5. First hole at my home course is 550 par 5 and without fail every time I played it I was 10-25 yards short of the green after going driver then hybrid. Bought a cheap 5 wood and have only used it once outside so far because of the weather, but it’s much longer than the hybrid.

It’s gonna definitely help fit that gap. Way easier to hit than a 3 wood but longer than the hybrid

I tried it.  I think the longest par 5 on any of the courses I play is just shy of 550.  I'd be lying if I said I got on in 2 with any consistency when playing a 3w approach, but I was usually a short chip unless I really @#$%  da bed.  I'd never been really confident with hybrids, but once I started improving with them I saw that I got on shorter par 5's more often with them - BUT - when I took the 3w out, I lost a more important piece to the puzzle - the tee-box.  I started making mental note of it, and it was apparent to me I used the 3w far more frequently off the tee than I did off the turf, and I put one back in.

I tried a 2h at 17*. Flight and spin were a little too low for my liking. Would have been nice for really fast fairways off the tee, but I don't think I'd do much flag hunting with that.

I have experimented a lot down the years Ive gone Driver 2 iron driver hybrid but every hybrid I have ever owned has gone straight left.  Driver 5 wood.  Basically if the fairway wood isnt a club you need as in need it off 3 tees and for par 5s its pretty redundant you could throw in another hybrid or wedge or just make the bag lighter.  Alternatively go to an older fairway wood which plays more like an iron/hybrid and isnt all about distance you might find a tad more consistency, i certainly did

No chance for me going with a 2 hybrid; I've tried it and it doesn't work.  A 4 wood plus a 3 driving iron for me.

I have played with a PING Anser 17 degree hybrid exclusively in place of a 3 wood for probably 3-4 years now.  That head is truly the best hybrid out there if you're looking for a 3 wood equivalent.  If you put a solid low-spin shaft into that head, it spins in the same ball park as a driver... when I hit mine from a tee and hit a nice tight draw it would spin in the 2800 range.  That is INSANE for a hybrid...

At this point the only way I would even think about playing with a 3 wood would be one that was a second tee shot club like a 3Deep or something equivalent... something that I would never use from the ground unless you came across the random wide open go for it par 5 that I needed a 280 yard bounce-up, get lucky shot.

I've played driver then 15* and 19* hybrids for so long I can't recall but I'd say around 15 years at least. I guess that would be a 0H and 2H equivalent?

I've been playing driver and 2 hybrid for a good eight or so years now. It makes sense...the gap between my driver and 2 hybrid is not so big that I feel like wasting a spot in my bag to plug it. Even if I did, that number never comes up when I play...if a par 4 is a little too long to reach with the 2h and driver would be too much, I'm fine being short and wedging on. Depending on the hole, I might even hit a five or six iron to have a full wedge in.

It works for me, but I don't know if it's something everyone would dig.

I go Driver then 3H. On longer par 5s I can't get there in 2 but I figure I wasn't gonna hit the green with a 3 wood anyway. Most times for me it's smarter to layup anyway.

Depends on the hybrid for me, but I could easily go driver-2h at the top.

Modern hybrids are as big or bigger than the fairways of old. I think for most people a shorter shaft length on the 3/4 wood would help in the ease of hitting that club.

I use my 3W quite a bit when driver is going to go through a fairway.  On some long par 4's that dog leg big the 2h just won't get me to the corner.  Having said that, I can hit my 3W so well, but also miss it both directions and it was a disappointment for me this year thinking that would be a club I could count on to stay in the fairway.  It was not. Usually the 2h is enough off the deck but can be a bit short from the tee box.  After reading some threads, I have to say I am a little interested in adding a second driver with a 13 degree or more loft.  I REALLY want a 230-235yd club that I can count on.  When my swing is a little off, driver is usually a club I still hit well.  Maybe two of those would be a good thing?

I wish I could commit to that.  Every time I ditch the fairway wood I buy another one.

Like you said Insanity - same crap results.

But I hit the 816H so good.

I was planning on driver 4 wood 19 23 hybrids - 5-PW 52 56 60 but can easily do driver 19 23 hybrid 4-PW 52 56 60 as well.....

If I ever find a hybrid that doesn't go left I'll consider it. My 3w used to be a go to club but of late it's been inconsistent and is becoming a liability.

I tried this for a bit too... in the beginning it worked fine but I knew I wanted to find a 3w I could hit... once I got my 913fd it changed everything.  The extra distance I get from the fairway has lead to way more greens in two or short chips to get in for birdie.  The 2h did like to go left and hard at times... couldn't trust it even though I wanted to.

Ive been playing without fairway woods for a while now, with good results. Not having a 3 wood in my bag saves me from dumb decisions. Too often have I wasted a perfectly good drive by following it up with a poor fairway wood shot, mostly because I try to hit it too hard.
However, I now have an 18 and a 20 hybrid, and a 3 iron and a 4 iron, and they all go similar distances: off the deck quality of strike has more influence on distance than club selection.
So I am strongly considering dropping the 2 hybrid for a 4 wood, which should give me more distance, and a higher flight.

I tried this for the majority of 2017. It worked fine, but there were many tee shots that I wished I had a fairway wood on. I put one back in the bag in November I believe. Its worth the search to find a head/shaft combo to fit your need.

I used to feel the exact same way.  After breaking both arms, finding the Titleist hybrids, and going with a heavy shaft I rarely hook one now.  Not sure you would want to follow that exact path but :-)

The Apex hybrids are just so easy to hit, as were the 910H’s I had previously. Not the longest hybrids out there, but plenty long for me.  I hardly ever pull them left, but I do with pull my FW’s (or ever worse, I top the FW’s).   They’re GREAT off the tee as well.
