The PGA Tour should do a skills challenge/All Star weekend type event!

I would personally love to watch some of the best players in the world get mic'd up and play against each other in various skills challenges. Maybe have a Ryder Cup type set up, but much less serious. They could have them;
  • play a putt putt course
  • long drive contest (maybe with hickory drivers?)
  • par 3 night golf
  • break panes of glass
  • flop shots
  • bend shots around targets
  • closest to the pin using opposite handed clubs
  • or anything that the viewer may enjoy.

Everything seems to be so serious these days, on the course and off. It could just be a fun thing they do to grow the game and I'd love to hear them jab back and forth at each other while playing a putt putt course!! Everything seems to be so serious these days

Would anyone like to watch something like that? What kind of events would you want to see?

The Euro tour does a few things like this. I don't tune in but it is good social media content.
Rogue SZ w/ AD MT
M1 w/ Diamana Thump
818 H1 w/ Even Flow Black
Z-765 w/ PX LZ
SM6 46° 50° 54°
MD PM Grind 58°
Works 7/Mullen TP

They used to have one back when there was a true silly season.  I always enjoyed it, although there was usually a little too much Peter Jacobsen for my taste.

I’d watch, but you’d never get the big names together without a tremendous amount of money and I don’t think it’s out there for something like this.

I had that thought as well. I dunno, maybe they could pull together a ton of money from TV sponsorships and they could play for a charity of their choice or something. Or just keep the money collected from sponsors. I think the PGA Tour could easily front the bill to send 10-15 golfers and their families to a resort for the week. It would be worth it's weight in gold when you consider how much it interest in would generate in the sport IMO. Plus I'm sure they'd love to all get together and booze it up at night without the pressure of winning a tournament

Didn't there used to be a televised skins game? That would be really fun to watch with the guys mic'd up.

It would also be fun to watch them have a 150 foot putt off on a ridiculous green. Just make it silly and fun

I just want a camera crew to follow the Tuesday money games that we hear bits and pieces about and see how different players are when they have to reach into their own pockets.

Even better--although this has zero chance of happening--would be a one-on-one challenge format where a certain number of players (say, that year's major winners) get to pick any opponent they want for a match, and both guys have to put up their own money. We all have those we like and dislike, but it would be fascinating to witness the dynamics between the players themselves. (The NBA is kind of doing this by letting the captains pick their teams for the All-Star Game.) Who would pick low-hanging fruit and go after a lesser player? Who would go big-game hunting? Imagine Tiger vs. Phil, Spieth vs. Thomas, or Reed challenging DJ or whoever is ranked number-one. The matches would be played at famous courses that aren't on TV like Cypress, Seminole, NGLA, etc. Hey, guy can dream ...

Who will watch this other than people who are specifically looking for and can't find better golf to watch that weekend?  It's still golf clubs and pro golfers and niche golfy stuff.

All for a charity of their choice.

It sounds like a fun idea but I agree that a skills challenge isnt likely to grow the game and create new viewers / players. Unfortunatey, non-golfers (and even some golfers) simply find golf boring to watch.

I personally think it would be a lot of fun to watch.

Good idea – probably not going to happen.

I’m guessing their image maintenance team encompassing life coaches, stewardship council members and social media advisory entourage would never allow it.

One year they had one at the 4 man majors tournament...

Tiger busted everyone’s glass on his first try if memory serves....
It was exactly like big break and he just started flushing 2 iron stingers into ogilvys and maybe furyks glass..
I think tiger had won twice that year so Furyk got the 4 th invite...

It was awesome and I can’t find a video of it on YouTube..

I suppose it had to be 2006 since that was ogilvys only major…

I was just thinking of this and found your thread.  I would love to see what these guys can really do in a relaxed environment, and of course make it fun for them and fun to watch on tv.  Complete with shot tracing and trackman ball speed where appropriate.  They could do all kinds of cool stuff and mix it up each year.  I would also love to see the "all-stars" be randomly organized into scramble teams as part of the all-star week, weekend.  They might try all kinds of crazy shots in that format, and it would be a small enough field where we could see it all easily on tv.  It could be considered an honor to play in, and proceeds go to charity?

I don't watch all star events from NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS or any other professional sporting event.  A huge waste of time from guys that are just trying to not get injured.  I wouldn't watch this either.  It would mean nothing.

I’d like to see a hallway/ limbo challenge type of event.

Like they have to land in a target area maybe 100–150 yards out but there’s only a width of maybe 6 feet and a beginning height of maybe 15 feet that idk maybe lowers based on time or gets lower every round so the competition gets to the point where they have to hit a 100 yard with the lowest trajectory possible.  Likewise opposite scenario for a flop shot contest.

They should do it like the NBA Allstar game this year.

Have fans vote for the top 20.  From there, two captains pick their teams.  Have one day of skills change, then one day of head to head match play.

or

Someone mentioned before on another thread, have a skills change where each pro can bet their own cash.  Would love to see it, but most likely would never happen.

I put this in the same category as people saying they would love to see 4 man scramble with tour pros. It sounds really good at first but after thinking about it for a second you realize it’s not going to be very entertaining for a 3 hour event. The things the euro tour does with the 3 minute videos on YouTube is perfect. It would be nice for the PGA tour to do those short little videos.

They used to host this at Poipu Bay in Kauai, HI. I remember seeing a huge poster of Phil along with the other winners that year when I went. Unreal golf course. When did they stop doing this?

I could be wrong here, but the risk of injury playing golf is quite a bit lower than any of those other sports is it not?  I enjoy watching home run derby and slam dunk contests, so I would enjoy long drive and perhaps some other fun things.

A PGA Tour All-Star event should be held at a stadium.
