The best attribute of matte finish balls is they don't roll as far on fast greens.  Glossy painted balls increase the effective stimpmeter reading by an inch or two when compared to matte finish balls. Tested this a few times last summer on greens which rolled 11 to 11.5  feet and got consistently lower readings with Volvick.  Try it yourself.

So far I've played with the:

Volvik Vivid
Volvik Vivid XT
Vice Pro Soft
Wilson Duo Soft Optix
Maxfli Speedfli

The Vivid and Pro Soft played fine but felt more like maybe a NXT ball. Not a horrible feel, but not that great either.

The Vivid XT felt fine on full shots, was long, but felt dead IMO on short game shots.

Duo Soft is REALLY soft. Too much testing during extreme weather to really give what I feel would be a good assessment of the ball. Overall I liked it and they pop off the putter.

My favorite so far has been the Speedfli red. It seems slightly softer than the Vivid and Pro soft. Can't give a full assessment though- I've only played it in really crummy weather.

I hit the ball high and with plenty of spin so none of these really plays much different than any other ball over all.

I personally love the matte color. Especially the red. I see it easily and the color is appealing to me. Enough that I game them when I have plenty of my favorite tour balls to last me a few years. That's why I play them.

Softfli's are out in Matte now. Green, white, orange and blue. I guess it is a Duo rip off. Anyways, they look good. But, I hate the 35 compression. Does the Matte finish help the feel in any way?

The green looks nice

Interesting.  i can find the matte ball if I use your link but if you go onto the golf galaxy site and search it nothing shows up.

Hmm, that is interesting. They are brand new. I was surprised to see a full end case dedicated to the ball at Dicks Sporting Goods. I also went to Golf Galaxy the day before and did not see them.

They look REALLY good. I am just afraid they will have the same marshmallow affect like the Duo and other Softfli balls.

I am not sure who really likes balls that soft. I prefer a low-mid compression like Gamersoft or Extra Soft.

Taylormade could have probably retired off the profits if they had released white matte golf balls with their white crows at the same time back in the day. Regardless, I tried a Volvik once and it was probably the worst ball I have ever tried. They need to improve on it if it's going to be a "thing"

Good to know, It's hard to see white balls on a dormant fairway. What color is best?

The Vice Pro Soft red/pink. Never lost them in the grass, only water and the cover finally scuffing.

i agree that it is a fad, but why hope that it passes? you don't have to buy them? it is not like it should affect you in any way. I think the vivid golf balls look awesome, they preform terrible though.

Project S will come out in matte yellow on April 1 - interesting. I don't think this fad will be ending any time soon. I still don't know any real advantages to a matte ball other than they look different and cool.

The Wilson Duos are great balls, but the matte-colored ones get stinky dirty with just 1-2 rolls in the fairway. You have to clean them constantly.

Ok, now I am seeing the matte ball everywhere. Today at Target, Nitro had cheap matte balls in different colors! That was a surprise. I have tried their white balls in the past and they are rocks. Not even worth five bucks a dozen. I wonder if there's any improvement to these new pulsar balls. They are 3 piece!

Wow, yet another matte ball option. I wasn't a fan of the SuperHot 55. It had no bite into the greens.

Also, as we have seen with the Project (s), the new claim is distance with greenside spin for these low/mid cost 3 piece balls.

I've constantly switched balls over the years looking for the right fit.  Chrome Soft seems to be the only ball going in my bag consistently.  Last year I tried the Volvik in Matte Red/Orange and loved the way the ball looked at address.  Problem was, it was a terrible ball. Wouldn't check at all on the green and even distance was sub-par to Chrome Soft (understood its not a fair comparison).

That said, I'm amped to see the Superhot in a matte finish.  I've played that ball before and albiet it's no Chrome Soft it's still a solid offering.  The finish has some sort of effect to my eye to where the ball looks almost rubber like a bouncy ball.  It looks softer for me if that makes any sense vice some of the standard surlyn balls on the market where the cover almost looks plastic.  It almost help me feel like I can be more controlled hitting a ball that visually doesn't lead me to believe it's a hard piece of plastic that i have to hit with all my mite.  Stupid I know, but in a mental game these Matte finsih's and products like the Truvis Chrome Soft clearly work for people, otherwise companies wouldn't invest in producing them.

I tried the volviks last year during the spring and think I saved several strokes.

Our spring rough can get pretty high and I believe I found the volvik where I dont think a white would have been found.

Now its winter and I am using chrome soft green soccer balls.   Bring that in a bright mat for spring and Im buying, probably would just keep on useing them.  As a matter of fact I Hope Callaway sees and agrees.  Not just green and black, lets get more like soccer and have some new designs, lots of colors out there.

Red matte are fantastic - and so far I've loved the Calloway - doesn't collect the dirt as some others and has a some decent check on greens - wearing polarized shades they really pop

Shiny red button of the day (do we need to create a new saying = Matte Red Button of the day)

Personally, I find colored / Truvis balls distracting / off when addressing the ball.
But they are pretty neat looking.

I just picked up the red matte Maxfli Speedfli -- Dick's has them at 3dz for $30 now for their 'golfathon' thing.

I really love the look of the red, and for the OCD in me it works out that most of the clubs in my bag (Wishon clubs) have red accents to them anyway.

I have not-so-great eyesight even with glasses on, so I'm really looking forward to putting them in play and seeing how much the color helps in finding and tracking them.
