Why are matte balls hot now? What are the benefits besides coming out in cool colors?

edit: I will answer my own question, lol. From the Vice web site:

The matte finished coating provides an anti-glare effect while addressing the ball as well as better visibility in the sky and on the ground.

Vice matte looks very nice on the tee but you won't notice that after you putt out. Horrible durability.

I like them just because they are different.  Everyone in my group plays a white ball, a color ball makes it easier to identify my ball's location.

My friend plays the matte white and I can't follow it in the air at all. I'm not a fan ~

Personally I've always felt that a brand new shiny ball is easier to follow in the air and spot on the ground than an old faded ball.

I think I can honestly say that I have never noticed glare off the ball.

It’s a fad.  It will hopefully pass quickly. Nothing like having a brand new ball that looks like it just came out of the pond after being there for 3 months.

A buddy of mine found and used a mat red Volvik ball for a few holes, and until he blasted it into the trees I did notice that it was easier to track in the air.
I find I have trouble tracking the ball in the air in the spring - maybe this would help.

For whatever reason, I personally find the colors very appealing. I have no trouble following them in the air and they seem to glow when they're in the shade.

For me it's entirely about the look. I can't explain why. But like I've mentioned in other threads, golf is a very mental game. If it pleases my minds eye to look down at this red ball, I think it helps.

The downside is that I normally play better overall performing balls. I'm wondering (doubting really) if it's even possible to produce a tour quality cover in this new matte finish. So for now, they're fun to play in the off season cold but I might have to give them up in Spring.

Well, I think there are colored Volvik balls that are tour quality such as the S3/4. But, only the Volvik XT and Vice Pro Soft have the matte finish.

S3 and s4 are legit. I love them. But after one round they turn pink.

I don’t care for them.  I tried some white matte finish Volviks.  Not because of the color but because I wanted to try that particular ball.  It was meh.  So I have 1/2 dz I can give away.

Just like anything things change. If you look around football helmets, Golf shafts, golf club heads, etc have all been done in gloss and now a matte finish. For me I prefer the look of matte. The Vice Pro Soft Lime is the best looking ball Iíve found to date.

I agree though with some that certain colors are tough to see. Iíve tried the Volvik and Maxfli Red matte finish balls and couldnít pick it up once it bounced. With a white yellow or lime ball I never have that issue.

I've always been a traditionalist but played a few rounds this Winter with the Volvik Vivid orange balls and those things are pretty fun. They are super long, bite great and I find them easy to see in the air. Don't know if the matt finish gives more bite on wedges but I'm a fan. Might just have to play them in white this Spring and see.
