Why are matte balls hot now? What are the benefits besides coming out in cool colors?

edit: I will answer my own question, lol. From the Vice web site:

The matte finished coating provides an anti-glare effect while addressing the ball as well as better visibility in the sky and on the ground.

Vice matte looks very nice on the tee but you won't notice that after you putt out. Horrible durability.

I like them just because they are different.  Everyone in my group plays a white ball, a color ball makes it easier to identify my ball's location.

My friend plays the matte white and I can't follow it in the air at all. I'm not a fan ~

Personally I've always felt that a brand new shiny ball is easier to follow in the air and spot on the ground than an old faded ball.

A buddy of mine found and used a mat red Volvik ball for a few holes, and until he blasted it into the trees I did notice that it was easier to track in the air.
I find I have trouble tracking the ball in the air in the spring - maybe this would help.

For whatever reason, I personally find the colors very appealing. I have no trouble following them in the air and they seem to glow when they're in the shade.

For me it's entirely about the look. I can't explain why. But like I've mentioned in other threads, golf is a very mental game. If it pleases my minds eye to look down at this red ball, I think it helps.

The downside is that I normally play better overall performing balls. I'm wondering (doubting really) if it's even possible to produce a tour quality cover in this new matte finish. So for now, they're fun to play in the off season cold but I might have to give them up in Spring.

Well, I think there are colored Volvik balls that are tour quality such as the S3/4. But, only the Volvik XT and Vice Pro Soft have the matte finish.

S3 and s4 are legit. I love them. But after one round they turn pink.

I don’t care for them.  I tried some white matte finish Volviks.  Not because of the color but because I wanted to try that particular ball.  It was meh.  So I have 1/2 dz I can give away.

Just like anything things change. If you look around football helmets, Golf shafts, golf club heads, etc have all been done in gloss and now a matte finish. For me I prefer the look of matte. The Vice Pro Soft Lime is the best looking ball Iíve found to date.

I agree though with some that certain colors are tough to see. Iíve tried the Volvik and Maxfli Red matte finish balls and couldnít pick it up once it bounced. With a white yellow or lime ball I never have that issue.

I've always been a traditionalist but played a few rounds this Winter with the Volvik Vivid orange balls and those things are pretty fun. They are super long, bite great and I find them easy to see in the air. Don't know if the matt finish gives more bite on wedges but I'm a fan. Might just have to play them in white this Spring and see.

I feel like a matte ball would have more drag in the air or excess spin off the club

I honestly bought a variety color pack dozen of the Volvik Vivids just because they look so awesome. I literally just have them on display.
I was checking in for my tee time and they had a bunch on the counter in a large bowl. I thought they were fake. I was so fascinated by them I bought the variety color dozen and 2 singles from the bowl to play. I didn't play the 2 singles long but they seemed decent.

Yeah that and it reduces glare. huh, I didn't know glare was an issue.

Marketing people must really have a good laugh at the golfing consumers.

Longer, straighter - we should all be hitting 350 yard drives by now - down the middle!

I bought a sleeve of the red Volvicks. Couldnít see them in the air or onnthe fairway. I lost the first one on the rough, impossible to see.
They also felt like a rock, nofeel to them, just dead.

I really bought them just to piss off the guys i play with. You shouldíve heard all the bs when I whipped out one on the first tee.

I don't understand any hate from some here. I am not a matte finish fan, but I certainly have no problem with those who are.

I got a lot of crap playing the Truvis in the past but the funny part is once some of the guys see the Truvis on chip and pitch shots they actually like seeing the spin vs a solid ball. Even those who wouldn't be caught dead playing a "Soccer ball" like how it looks on the short shots.

Considering I am considered colorblind (Can see 1/4 color of normal person) I can see the matte orange and pink really well.  The green is horrible for me and red is tough.  If I use a penny to mark a ball I will lose it 9 out of 10 times.  This helps me practically not just the fad.

I played the Vice matte finish balls and found that they looked scuffed and dirty gray after like two holes. Pass.

However, a friend gave me a sleeve of Vice Pro in the red and I love them. Ball feels great and I can spot the ball from a mile away. I'm all in for a little while.
