All threw my high school and college golf careers my coaches have to preached to me to take safe plays like hybrids off of tight holes or just punching out of the woods sideways instead of possibly advancing the ball farther down the hole with a punch out.  I never liked the idea of being a smart golfer because I can still hook my hybrid of the planet like my driver and i can still mess up a simple punch shot.  I was never truly able to use my imagine in high school and college golf because my coaches always preached smart golf.  I'd say I'm a dumb golfer.  I'll try to it over or around anything before I give up and punch out sideways.  Obvious if I'm playing for money or are in a tournament, I'll usually go with a safe shot if I'm in trouble but you know there are times were I try to pull off shots because when you pull off a shot that you see if you head, there is not greater feeling.

Basically I am just interested if alot of you go with the smart play or if you guys are looking for ways to get to the green or close to it if you're in trouble?

I'm in Mensa but I'm a dumb golfer.

I even plan to play smart or conservative or whatever you want to call it but I just can't do it.  About 20 years ago I'm playing a resort course and have 150 to the green from the middle of the fairway.  The hole is cut way left, behind a trap and next to a lake to the left of the green and there is a large tree guarding the left side of the green.  It's a real easy decision to hit to the middle of the green.  Aimed to the middle and pulled it left and gave myself a 10 foot birdie putt.  Missed the putt.

I can't even count the times I've tried to punch out from under a tree and hope it goes into the bunker and pops out and onto the green.  Just crazy, stupid shots.

Always have to try to punch it through bunkers.  I'll even try that in tournaments.

Smart......100% smart.

Punching out from tree,
and straight from the tee,
I play most par-5 holes in three.

I like pars, and poetry, and celery.

I try to be a smart golfer, but my “ dumb” swings trip me up.
Example: lay up to 95-100yrds on par 5’s, only to chunk my wedge and miss the green.
That said, I do try to strategize my way around the course and play to my strengths.
Don’t try hero shots unless there’s really a window or a safe miss.

If I'm in trouble, playing smart takes the big numbers out of play.  Off the tee I can miss a fairway with a 3 wood or hybrid as easily as with a driver.  So, sometimes smart, sometimes dumb.

+1 on dumb swings. I'm slowly learning my limits and getting better at course strategy but don't always take all the variables into account. Sometimes I'll just get in the zone and can see every shot, but it's often easier on my feeble mind just to fire at the pin or go for the hero shot.

Since birth I been a mensa :beruo: player.  Can't help myself.  Though I have tried to be 'dumb' :stinker:  it just doesn't critical reason well.  Of course, there are those $$$ times when I push myself to get down and dumb, knowing dumb may gain the advantage.  The problem with $$$ and trying dumb golf, the other guy turns out to be the smarter of the two and takes my money. :beach:

I'm definitely a "safe" player. The guys I play with call me "boring" because I don't usually go for dangerous shots. I play most par 5's in three. Partly because it's safer, but also partly because I don't carry a 3 or 5 wood in my bag.

I could probably make more birdies if I were more aggressive, but I'd also probably put up a lot more doubles too. I'm like David Simms in that I'll take 18 pars all day.

I play smart when I'm playing well. I take more risks to salvage a bad round/and try out different shots.

Safe and smart.  I compete with longer hitters by keeping it in play and never making double.  I wear people down with my chipping and putting.

I play with guys all the time who ought to be breaking 80 but can’t break 90 because of their decision making.  You’d think that final score would be more important than the hero shot, but not for some.

The final score is always important.  I try to shoot in the 70s low 80s every time I play but I'm only as good as my swing that day.  If I have my swing going, I feel as if I can hit any shot that day and I'm probably going to take risky shots out of trouble.

I am not saying I'm the player saying trees are 90 percent air and trying to smack it through 6 trees, I always look to advance the ball forward even if its a little bit, instead of punching out straight sideways.

I would say I am a smart golfer.  I always take enough club on a par three to hit it to the back of the green.  Most folks I play with come up short, habitually.

Heck, I might hit driver on a 200 yard par 3 if it is into a strong wind and it is 55*.  People I play with wouldn't do that, and they come up way short.

On Sundays, I used to play hickory
