Screw Brandel - he loses credibility when the most recent, exciting thing is always the greatest, not the first time.

Although he may have other ideas since, Nicklaus among others considered a 245 3w from Seve at a critical point in his match in the '83 Ryder Cup the greatest shot they had ever seen.

I second Hogan's 1 (or 2) iron shot a Merion.  Makes par to force a playoff...plus, it's Hogan!

The photograph is quite famous and was a great piece of work - but the shot itself was quite ordinary. 40 feet away, some accounts say it was on the fringe and not on the green. If we are using some of the same rationale in this thread “it didn’t even go in”.

My favorite is tiger at the PGA out of the bunker. Ball far below his feet and he lifts a 3 iron like it's a gap wedge. It was a shot that only he could pull off. I fully believe that.

I love DJs game, but that Drive, while incredible, was a fortunate bounce and nowhere near the greatest shot ever hit.

Tiger out of the bunker in Canada was absolutely unbelievable. Chamblee needs to go away.

Great shot.....but all he did was hit it hard on the perfect line and he might have flighted it down under the wind...that's only 3 variables!  The more variables perfected the better in my opinion and there's many more great shots much more complicated then that...hell it wasn't even under any pressure

How stupid....a great drive, yes.  But i have a hard time calling a shot where 90% of the result is dependent upon a bounce and how it rolls with a driver, the best ever. Again, a great drive, but more luck than anything.  Brandel seems to be getting senile in his older age because he is getting worse it seems.

Perhaps if the words had been spoken by someone other than Brandel it would have been considered a "really good" shot by at least a few of you???

It was an amazing shot, could be shot of the year, but it's not all time best - Too much luck involved.

That's exactly what I was going to say. It was, without a doubt, fantastic, but wasn't the best shot of all time as BC declared it. That's more what this thread is talking about than the fact that the shot was "ho-hum".

the drive got over 100 yards of roll. it is a perfect example of not how the ball goes too far but course fairways are mowed to tight.

How 'bout Phil's flop shot at the Scottish Open a few years ago.  With the Moray Firth waiting to gobble up any mistake, Phil dropped it stone dead, two feet from the hole.

I think we should let the greatest golfer that ever lived settle the argument

Jack Nicklaus once described Seve Ballesteros' 245-yard bunker shot on the 18th hole at PGA National during the 1983 Ryder Cup as "the finest shot I've ever seen."

Pity there is no footage of it, but everyone who was there, American and European still say it's the greatest shot ever........

Phil and Tiger, blah blah blah :))

Bernhard Langer: Seve Ballesteros produced the most amazing and miraculous shot I have ever seen

I sometimes get asked what was the greatest shot I ever experienced. It was Seve’s at the 1983 Ryder Cup at PGA National.

He drove it into a bunker at the par-five last. I had finished my match and went out to watch. I was thinking that I would use a seven-iron to clear the lip and lay up for a wedge or a nine-iron into the green. There was water everywhere and the lip was so high.

Seve pulled out his three-wood. I thought, what is he going to do with that? The ball was in the sand a few feet away from a two-foot lip. Then I saw the most amazing shot I have ever seen. He didn’t just clear the lip, he drew the ball, starting it out over the lake and on to the green and made birdie. This, to me, is still the most miraculous shot I have ever seen. He was a magician with a golf club.

Nope doesn't even make my top 10.  It was a great golf shot.  But the final outcome of the golf tournament did not depend on it and c'mon it's a small field regular tour stop.  Silly Brandel!!!

and now the rest of the story...

Seve was three up standing on the twelfth tee and then lost the next four holes to Fuzzy Zoeller, who was battling a bad back. Seve won #16 to draw even and they went to the last tied. They both bungled their drives and gouged out seconds from the rough. Seve's shot from the bunker was actually his third shot. He put it on the left fringe and Fuzzy nailed a two iron into the wind and reach the green. Seve had to make a four footer for par to salvage the draw.

The other famous shot of the day by Lanny Wadkins also did not win the match, but salvaged a draw. It's not remembered as much, but Sam Torrance did the same thing (with his fourth shot) to get a draw with Tom Kite just ahead of Lanny's match. Also of note was the nearby lightning storm. Play almost certainly would have been stopped in this day and age with the matches still hanging in the balance.

The US won because Bernard Gallacher butchered the 17th even worse than Tom Watson. He three putted for double bogey and Watson won the hole and the match 2&1.
swing is irrelevant, score is everything

just say NO.... to practice swings

How has nobody mentioned “the shot heard around the world”?   Easily the most significant to winning a major, one that that had basically given to someone else.  Gene Sarazen making double eagle on 15 at Augusta while three back of the lead to force a playoff which he eventually won.  The winner’s check had already been made out to Craig Wood who had already finished.
I may be old sir but I don't remember watching that one. :(

I think someone did mention it but it's not really as high as it should be because no one has seen it.  For all we know Young Tommy Morris holing out off of a sheep's butt is a shot lost to history.

I got all the way to Jonathon Byrd's ace in the dark without replying to one post.

No, but hitting it long AND STRAIGHT is the hardest thing to do in golf. No one has ever hit a longer and straighter shot in a pga tour event in its hundred year history. Let alone on a Sunday, as the number 1 player in the world and then won.

When you are leading a PGA TOUR event on Sunday there is a lot of pressure, and that tee shot had to be threaded through a valley, 15 yards left is a likely lost ball, 10 yards right is a bunker.

For me, the final 100+ yards of downhill, sidehill runout still contains a heck of a lot of luck. Amazing feat, for sure, a "Best of" contender, not in my opinion.

The one thing he is not going to tweet...."Yes world you are all correct and I was wrong". Or even "I might have been a little bit over the top there".

Dustin doesn’t think anything in life is great. Well, outside of his new driver.
