Course: Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. Par 70, a shade under 7,100 yards. Designed by Seth Raynor in 1927

72-Hole Record: (Aggregate): 253 (-27) by Justin Thomas (2017)

Course Record: 59 by Justin Thomas (1st round, 2017)

Last Year: Justin Thomas cruised to a 7-stroke victory over Justin Rose. The lead never got below 5 shots for Thomas on Sunday, and he set both a new 36 hole scoring record (59-64) and 72 hole aggregate record on the PGA Tour. Jordan Spieth grabbed a third place finish at 19 under. Scoring will likely be very low again this year, as there were 2 putts for 59 during the 2017 tournament, by Thomas and Kisner.

Field: https://www.pgatour....waii/field.html

Notables: Jordan Spieth (No. 2), Justin Thomas (No. 3) , Xander Schauffele (No. 25)

Note: Justin Thomas is without his regular caddy due to injury, and has Jim “Bones” Mackay on the bag this week, former caddy of Phil Mickelson.

Weather Forecast: High of 80 and low of 65 degrees for the week
Partly cloudy on Thursday and Friday. Clear skies for the weekend.

Enjoy the tournament everyone. Best wishes to bigdave91 to have fun attending the event and enjoy the weather.

This tournament has a special place for me, this is first time I caddied for Pros, did it for 6 years while stationed in Hawaii, can't wait to see if there will be another 59 or lower this year, I played the course in the "volunteer" tournament for those years as well, it is a tight layout but not impossible, shot making and course management are a must (as every tournament), miss in the wrong spot and you'll pay for it, find the fairway and you can score well...love it!!!

Decent, if not earth shattering field.

Interested to see how Justin Thomas will rebound after last week. If you had watched them Thursday, you would have thought that Thomas was going to be the one finishing top 10 and Spieth would have been down the field but it was obviously the other way around. Also hoping that Jimmy Walker can have a good week. He seems to have been active on social media, the last few weeks and from what I have read, he is starting to feel better now so at a course he has played well at in the past (two wins), it would be nice for him to get a good result under his belt.

I hope Jimmy plays well too. I saw his wife was also diagnosed with Lymes disease. Cant imagine how tough it is for both of them.

I see at least one chance for a sub 59 round. This week. If a round meets my criteria for a sub 60, I will start giving updates for those at work or not watching. I think 57 is absolutely possible. Can't wait till Thursday.

I'll venture a "sleeper pick" and say Wesley Bryan wins this one, which would be his first good result since his win at Harbor Town.
Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

Give me some Baddely or Jerry Kelly (and hopefully a fake mugging so the week is interesting) - course just does nothing for me watching on TV.

Thats terrible news about his wife. Hope everything turns out well. Now rooting for him. It was only a year and some change ago when he turned Baltusrol into mini-golf.

I’ll be at the tournament this weekend. Are the hospitality tents worth the extra price at this event? Different bathrooms in the tents? I’m assuming port-a-johns are on the course for use. Any good advice for getting autographs or best places to view the tournament?
I know every tournament is different. Any good items in the Merch tents?

Thanks

Since it's a Ryder Cup year, I'm on this kick where I'm pulling for more young Americans to emerge as serious contenders to make the team.  This week's event seems like a great opportunity for guys like, say, Ollie Schniederjans to make some noise.

I'll be hoping for good weeks from Ollie, Daniel Berger, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Beau Hossler, Patrick Rodgers and Xander Schauffele.  And of course I'd love to see strong performances from Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.  Let's hope it's an entertaining tournament.

Sunny, 82, and breezy, today.  Hung around practice green, salivating over all the new putters!  Looked like everyone was trying to figure out the pull of the grainy greens.   Na and Lee seemed  to have them figured out.  Some of the others, not so much LOL.  Lots of Trackman and requests for new wedges.  Should be good weather this week!  Will head down with son, tomorrow, to try and see Spieth, Thomas.   Enjoy the snow🌈☀️

For autographs, I would get them right after their practice rounds and maybe at the end of the first and last rounds...as for the tents, they are nice maybe as any other tournament, it is quite expensive though, it is Hawaii...that said the experience is amazing, the pros seem more approachable, they have both regular restroom and port-a-johns (these are all over the course), the have some food trucks as well that sell very good to amazing shrimp plate lunches among other things, again a bit pricy...the course is flat so pick your favorite group or player (if he is there) and follow along, there a few holes in the front nine that you can catch a few groups at a time, in the back nine I would suggest between 16-17, you can catch 3 different tee shots down the stretch...enjoy, I miss Hawaii!!!!

The trade winds will be disappearing later this afternoon and wont reappear until after the tournament is over.  That being said, you will likely see low scores again this year.

Is the Michelob Ultra 19th hole hospitality tent worth the extra $55/person? All you really get is A/C and 2 drinks. Will the heat and sun be that bad? Only supposed to be 80 degrees. Wasn't sure if you could even see any action from inside the tent or not. I would hate to waste the money if there isn't anything special or you cant really see any action from the tent.

This is new this year, so hard to give an opinion one way or the other.  However, it is located within the spectator village between 11 and 18 which isn't conducive to watching live golf.  I imagine they'll have TV's on with both Golf and the NFL.  I don't know if you can see any "live" golf from within the tent.  Waialae isn't a large property and they have to squeeze in spectator amenities where they can.  Hell, even the driving range isn't long enough to accommodate the long high hitters, and they have to erect nets extending from cranes to allow the players to hit drivers.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new greens at #6 and #17. Tom Doak redid those two after last years tournament. The green at #6 is now a Punch Bowl and #17 has been restored to a Redan style (I guess that's what it was pre late 1980's early 1990's).

here's a podcast with Doak talking about the changes at Waialae: http://www.friedegg....d1d9a-140235669

Thank you for the info. Is it hard to find shade on the course to the point where the AC would be good to have? I guess getting out of the sun for a little while wouldn't be too bad, if that is the only place to go on the course.

Thank you for the info. Is it hard to find shade on the course to the point where the AC would be good to have? I guess getting out of the sun for a little while wouldn't be too bad, if that is the only place to go on the course.

Finding shade shouldn't be a problem.  There are many large trees to hide from the sun.

I don't know much about the history of this tournament, but I don't understand why they continue to play Waialae Country Club?  You go from a visually stunning course at Kapalua to that?  There are many beautiful courses in Hawaii to choose from so I don't get it....

Interesting on a will-look-at-scoreboard-once-per-day level. Really, It's when the Florida Swing comes around my interest wakes up.  And well, this year, the Tiger tournaments too.

Mainly tradition. It's been held at Waialae since 1965.
