Slightly tricky question this one. Assume we're talking about courses that you can and do often play at as the mood takes you. So ignoring courses you only ever visit as part of an organised league and ignoring courses you can't/won't visit because they only allow visitors as guests of members. Let's assume most people are prepared to travel for an hour each way to get to a course.

Within an hour's drive my buddy and I have seven that we visit multiple times during the year. There's another five that we could visit if we wanted but they're a bit pricey (but happily accept visitors as far we know).

These are all around the Banbury, UK area.

If I got in to Golf Now and put 25 mile radius.... I'd say about 30 courses pop up. Now do I play all of those? No way. I probably keep about 80% of my rounds to the same 5 or 6 tracks.

On the one hand, I'm fortunate to have as my home course the place I'd rather play than any other course within a 100-mile drive. So I can truly say I never get bored or dissatisfied when playing there 120-140 times a year.

If I look within a reasonable radius of say 45 minutes each way driving time, there are probably something like 25 public/semi-private courses and 15 or so private clubs (a few of the privates I can play on reciprocal or because I know members there). Some of them are perfectly fine but quite a few are pretty scruffy compared to what I'm used to.

But the majority of those I would never play for the simple reason they won't allow me to walk the course. That's a problem you don't have in the UK I'm guessing. That leaves a handful of rather low-end public courses which allow walking and just a couple of the private ones. In a typical year I might visit three or four of them, max, for a round or two each. Mostly when my own course is closed or the greens have just been punched or something.
Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

Indeed not, that's quite mind boggling actually. Most courses here have buggies available for hire but not many people use them. Most people have trolleys (a lot like me have electric trolleys) and a few hardy people carry.

My buddy and I are considering hiring a buggy the next time we go to Helidon Lakes but that's because it's quite hilly (I often joke that it should be called Hillidon Lakes) and often very busy as it's a resort. Last time we went there it was a 5 hour round and we were standing waiting for five minutes at most tees. We were fifteen minutes late teeing off. By the time we got to the 18th hole we were knackered.

Which is a shame since it's an awesome 18th. I tried for a hole in one but my hips were playing up by then and I shanked it instead. Still my buddy enjoyed my attempt - don't think he stopped chuckling until we were off the course :(

Good question as I've never counted before, until now. We have 40 public courses within a 25 mile radius, and 109 public courses within a 50 mile radius. So we have several, and I do play my favorites besides what I consider my home course because of my league. But I'm not a member of any because of the variety of choices.

Where I live in suburban Philadelphia, which includes over the river in NJ, I'd have to say within an hour or so drive there are probably at least 75-80 or so public golf courses. I'd be hard pressed to count them all.

For example, the Golf Association of Philadelphia lists 153 public and private courses in their directory.

I just put a 50 mile radius in Golfnow and got 55 courses. I'm sure a bunch don't even list tee times in the middle of winter, and I know a good number of public courses that are not part of Golfnow.

We have 4 courses in my town.  Two of these are in terrible shape.  One semi private course that is decent and one private.  If i drive about 45 minutes there are two nice casino courses.  Not many options in small town Mississippi.

Within city limits, 3 18 hole public courses, 1 9 hole public, and 3 private clubs. Within an hour drive each way, that number is probably around 12 public and at least 3 private clubs that I am aware of. An hour gets you to the outskirts of the Lake of the Ozarks, so there could be a few more if I took the time to actually look.

I'm going 30 miles out. Nine courses, two of which I don't play as they are lousy and over priced. I didn't count the one private or the one that's closing in May. Add another 30 miles and there's three more. I'm in San Luis Obispo, California.

Well if the question is how many I’d actually want to play my answer drops to two! Maybe three if I’m willing to drive 45 minutes to get there.

Over a hundred within 50 miles. Unfortunately the one I could hit with an 8 iron from my back garden is being run down by the local council and will be houses in a few years.

Using Golfnow, 48 public courses within 45 miles. The problem I live close enough to a big city that ithere are a lot of pricey ones and a lot of rundown ones that are close, and some interesting reasonably priced courses at the outer ends of that 45 mile radius. So I either have to overpay for a beat up, overcrowded course thatís close, REALLY overpay for a decent course thatís close, or drive an hour each way. Itís either more than I can afford, or I have to budget 5-6 hours of my day to play on a weekend.
