Hey, Guys,

This winter weather is forcing me no choice but to partake in putter projects.  My next one is getting a close replica of Tiger's 97 Newport.

I DO understand the variations from Sole stamp --> Face Stamp --> elastomer border around insert.

Special thanks to Smeech8000 for doing a GREAT job explaining that to me.

My question is simple.  Does anyone know, FOR SURE, if Tiger's winning putter had a sight dot?

The Scotty pebble grip and Wilson putter shaft are pretty well solidified, but, it's amazing how few pics there are of the top line of the winning flatstick.

I have attached two photos from previous threads.  The magazine picture, I understand, is questionable in terms of authenticity (i.e., whether that's actually Tigers).

Thanks for tolerating my dork-ness!

You guys were so helpful with my Byron build.  Thanks in advance for the hep here!

Regular Newport with lead tape over the sight line and colored black with sharpie. It did have a sight dot.

Hmmm...can I ask what you guys are going off of with that info?  I don't doubt it, but, just curious how you know seeing as the lack of photos?  Memory?  Information from an insider?

As mention in original post, there are many, including myself that question the authenticity of that catalog/magazine photo.  There DOES seem to be a dot slightly visible in the Golf Digest picture though....And, 99% sure that IS his actual putter as it has the Wilson shaft and pebble Scotty grip....

Saw that, BIIGCat.  And, it sure would seem that if his had a dot, they’d have put one.  In fact, I saw one that had a plaque saying it was an “exact replica.”  That being said, I know other Scotty Tiger replicas have had subtle differences.  I actually find it AMAZING that there isn’t a single photo or still from the coverage that shows it.  Bout to get out the old VHS tape!  Ha

Would stand to reason it had a dot. The Disney longneck he won with had one.  And his GSS has one now. So did  All the Nike versions.

Funny, that picture of him (according to caption) is of him at US Open later that year.  But, preeeetty safe to say he didn’t change putters after the biggest win of his life and making history.

That’s a Newport, hasn’t he always had a Newport 2?

The COA of the replica calls it a Teryllium Newport.  There are four for sale on eBay with some good pics.  Search eBay 'Tiger 97 Masters putter'.  And no sight dot on the replica.

BTW he switched to the Newport 2 for the '99 Byron or so says Golf Digest.  Here's some text from a Nov 2016 article:

Coming into the 1999 GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic, Tiger Woods was T-102 in putting on the PGA Tour and had won just three tournaments since a victory in the same event in 1997. At the ’99 Nelson, Woods, who rarely changes clubs, switched putters, put a Scotty Cameron by Titleist Newport 2 in his bag. Now, as Woods prepares for his latest comeback at the Hero World Challenge, reports are that the former World No. 1 is reuniting with his favorite flat stick.

Good stuff, man!  I have seen those on eBay; that's where I saw the "exact replica" plaque, too....

A couple things, thought....

First, Scotty replica's tend to have subtle differences....for example, in the pictures....you see they stamped "T.W." which isn't on Tiger's.  And, Tiger's have very light milling (if any).  The replica has significant milling.

Finally, it's pretty darn hard to argue with that photo with the sightline visible!

Not arguing, at all, as I don't know for sure!  But, just more stuff to chew on!

Will post pictures when I get home!

You can see a sight dot here from July 1997. Also looks like some custom Scotty heel stamping.

So here's a pic from the 97 masters that shows it's def a regular newport but all pics I could find were from an angle that didn't show the topline.  And here's a registry entry from the Cameron Shop that says "same model Tiger used..." but, you know.

Check out the Scotty Cameron World book from Golf Style that was released in 2006 I believe.  It has Tiger's 97 Newport TeI3 winner with a sight dot on it.  There area also tons of other cool older putters in it.
Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

All great posts!  for some reason, I can't upload pics as easily as in the original post....  Here's a link to all of the photos, in an article....clearly not an exact replica (of the GSS Tiger Scotty....)

And, yes.  Tigers Newport had the sole stamp on the bottom vs the replica which moved it to the face.  It’s these subtle differences that make he think the replica simply omitted the sight dot.

Story covers a bit of the tei3’s as well

I am....that's a GREAT article.  Pretty incredible, really.  Also, saw an article (might be same one) where Tiger was able to tell when a sight dot was larger (by an unbelievably small margin).  Pretty crazy.....

I think at this point, I'm pretty that the TEI3 that won the Masters DID have a sight dot.

Pretty crazy that the putter later that year (pics above) there is new, white stamping on the heel (but not the TEI3 stamp).  Grip is different, too....more of a wrap vs the pebble.  This thread has definitely furthered the mystery....

And, perhaps MOST interesting....this Scotty World Book (great tip, thank you!) appears to be very hard to find.  But, the pages of it (I found some photos of them on google) it look a LOT like the pictures, above, which seemed fishy (the one showing the dot and lead tape over what appears to be a sightline)...very interesting....

The mystery lives on!

A sampling of some pics from the Tiger Woods section of the Scotty Cameron world Book.  There are tons of other incredible putters in it including a section showing the Cameron’s a lot of touring pros we’re using.  He used a sight dot on his 97 Masters winner. I love how used it looks.  He used a sight dot on other putters he has used including the fabeled Newport 2.

does anyone else think they see a sight line on the Tel 3?  like with paintfill removed or with black paintfill... ?

Gotta admit that it does... you can tell there's tape on the flange because the last row of dots in the cavity is partially obscured at the bottom.

Possibly had a sight line model to transition from the anser 2 he used for so many years, then realized he preferred a dot?  What did he use for the last two U.S. Am's and/or his 1996 PGA Tour season?

Also, look how thin the material is between the top of the insert and the topline!  Definitely a resto... someone should've told TW that will kill the value.

Hopefully he had the work done at the Custom Shop at least...

Couldn't agree more on how thin the topline is!  Noticed that myself.  I have one, already, with a sightline, coincidentally (added by Scotty shop)!  And, the insert DEFINITELY doesn't come that close tot he topline.

This thread has been awesome and super interesting!
