Talking about price of golf balls always seems to turn into an exercises in one-upmanship. Do you mean balls that have a normal MAP of under $30? Or ones routinely discounted to under $30? Or ones that show up in quantities of a few hundred dozen on eBay for $30 then are gone a month later?

Someone can always find a one-off deal that almost arbitrarily cheap.

Why does anyone play anything other than a tour ball?

I've heard many reasons.

Some people honestly feel that the extra approach shot and short-game spin hurts them. And some of those are used to and/or want the ball to release and roll forward on every single shot and to know it will never check up and stop.

Some people mistakenly think that Surlyn balls spin less off the driver or that they magically correct "sidespin".

Some people think low-compression Surlyn balls fly farther than "Tour" balls for certain clubhead speed ranges.

Some people always buy balls at list price from the golf course pro shop and can't find any prices less than $40/dozen on urethane balls.

Some people have a vague sense of needing to "good enough" to play a higher performing golf ball, whatever the heck that means to them.

And some people just want to prove a point that they can play well regardless of the golf ball's performance.

I'm sure there are numerous other reasons because a whole lot of Surlyn covered balls are sold every day...

Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

Huh?  I never said it had to be under $30.  I said $30, or I figured everyone would read that as in the $30 range.  I bought a dozen off Amazon for $32.  In my opinion that certainly qualifies....
Didn't intend to be persnickety.  I seriously haven't seen Duo-U under 40ish.  Great ball.  And almost every Volvik I've seen seems kinda pricey.

*UPDATE - Just to check my math, I looked on Amazon for Duo-U..  if you search it from Amazon it's $40ish.  If you find it off of a direct google search, I found someone selling them for $28 a dozen!  Just ordered some, even though I'm so full up on golf balls I should probably never buy again...

No problem.

I played the Duo-U and to be honest I think it performs worse than the Volvik Vibes, but better than the Taylormade Project A's.  They definitely aren't worth $40 in my opinion.  I never felt like I was using a ball close in performance to a pro v1, but at only $5 less than pro v1s they are priced as if they are just as good (which they aren't in my opinion).

Especially when the FG Tour is only $30 at budget golf.

Callaway Hex bite are $20 prime shipping a dozen.
Rock Bottom sometimes you can get them as low as $1.50 a ball.
Flies pretty straight, good stopping on the greens .
Not a 4 piece though, just 3.
Very similar to ProV1 but the cover scrapes a little every now and again.
I lose so many I don't even care. Lol

I sell some stuff on Amazon and really getting a dozen balls for $20 is a steal.
The seller has to pay like $6 in fees to have Amazon ship it from their warehouse.
