Driver, putter, 52, 56, 60, 64 per signature. Scratch 6i and 716MB 7i.

That's a real Dave Pelz setup.
It is very course specific too. I'm thinking I'd be better served with my current game to drop the driver and the 64 and play a 1&2 iron MP-14 for tight courses. Works out to be 18 & 21° lofts.

4 specialist wedges is a lot in most 14 club setups so it's a lot in an 8 club bag. But each to their own, what works for you etc.

As for a 21° 2 iron I like it. That' a 3 iron in my setup and a 4 iron in most modern sets.
It's a 2 and 3 iron essentially. I figured this out one day at the range when I just could not hang with the MP-29 1 iron. I was swinging out of my shoes trying to match it. Nothing. It was almost exactly like the 29's 2 iron. So I walked bag to my phone and googled it. 18° I'm a 15°-27° 1-5i kind of guy. I like the 4° gaps beyond that then 6° on the wedges. I'm in love with wedges because I play on a green parking lot where the options for up and down are bump and run......or a flop shot.

In rotation:

Well I've been doing a lot of experimenting on my last few rounds and I think I've found my setup. It's a 10 club bag and it goes a little something like this
Driver (10.5*)
Hybrid (18*)
4 iron (24*)
6 iron (30*)
7,8,9 irons (35,39,43*)
PW (49*)
SW (56*)
Putter
I've stretched out the loft gaps between my hybrid and 7 iron as once I get past my 7 iron I find my yardage gaps start to bunch up a too close to warrant having more clubs in there. I've kept 7,8 and 9 irons as I found myself using them a lot on the course I play most. Tried the 10 club set on my last round and it worked perfectly and didn't kill my back afterwards. This setup for me I think is a keeper.

Titleist 913d2 10.5*
Ping i15 3,5,7,8,9,PW
Ping Gorge Tour 52/58
Odyssey Metal X #7

Looks good - if you want to get to a single # you could bump up your Hybrid to 20--22 and have a 5 iron to split the 4/6 combo.

That's my bag: D, 22 HB, 5, 7, 8, 9, P, SW, putter

Placed an order today for a half-set of irons, my first true half-set.

Going 4/6/8/P in Miura CB57s along with a Miura C-grind 55 bent to 56*.  Super excited to have a set of Miuras, always wanted a set.

Will keep my full set of Bridgestone J40 DPCs for now if/when I feel the need to take out a full set and my stand bag, but really looking forward to spending a lot of time with these Miuras in my Mackenzie this year.

Will probably look at upgrading my 3 wood soon as well, but will keep the 913 D2 and Byron putter in the bag.

Thanks to Usher golf for being great to work with and willing to sell me a half-set of CB57s!

Congrats!!  That will be a really special minimalist kit.  Keep us posted once you settle in with the Miuras.

I did something similar ... special ordered just the clubs I really wanted.  Still have a set of MP15s if/when I want a larger set, but I've grown so accustomed to being minimalist I seldom use them.

What a great deal that you were able to order a new "half" set. Sure hope it works for you - going to make a lot of jealous!

Thanks!  I'm very excited and will definitely report back once I get them.  I was very happy to hear I could get a half set, haven't seen single iron options from Miura really but Chip Usher said he was willing to split up a set for me and sell me just the evens.  Sounds like they should be shipping out by end of the week, he had everything in stock for my build since I went pretty basic with DG S300 shafts and Tour Velvet midsize grips.

Well I carried on my 8 club adventure from last season and it's brought some brilliant results. I've shot 73, 78 and 80 gross in the last week off 8 and now down to 7. Win a stableford with 42 points and not i was well chuffed! Not won in years!! With our course still very wet but getting drier each day, it's been tough but in a way made it easier using my hybrids into the greens. I'm not a long hitter by any means, in fact im short but the easy carrying and not messing around after the round is great. So I'm settled on driver, 4 wood, 3,5 &7 hybrids 9 iron sw and putter....perfect

I'm loving my eight club bag, there is absolutely no second guessing club selection. I've been playing the odd irons but my evens are getting lonely, so I think next round I'm going...

I like the idea of the 4 wood.  I'm guessing 17* right?

I go driver, 2iron, 4iron on down.

I love hitting my 2 iron, but I do give something up trying to chase 5s in two.

Yeah, playing it at 17.5* right now. Been a while since I've played a 4 iron and I've recently started gaming MP 32's, so we'll see if I've got enough a** to get it up in the air 😂

Thinking about making a minimalist set specifically for walking with 6* gaps. I feel I have a hard time with every other club (8* gaps), but 1.5 clubs would be fine.

Big Bertha Mini (14 set to 16)

5I M2 at 21.5 38.25" (stock lie 61.75)

DBM 6I 30->28* at 37.5", Lie 62? (bend will get 0.029" more offset and 2* less bounce)

DBM 7I 34* at 37", Lie 63; D2

DBM 8I 38->40* at 36.5; Lie 64?

DBM P 46* at 36.25; Lie 64.5?

52W maltby tour grind at 36": Lie 65 D4?

58W SM6 K grind at 35.75" Lie 64(need changed to 65 or 66)

Edel Putter

That would be 9 clubs, or I may play 10 clubs and switch mini driver to Driver+7wood. The 10 club setup seems basically like a full set, don't think I would miss any clubs.

I hired a half set years ago that was exactly that setup. Not sure the SW was 58° and it was a 5 wood vs a 4 wood but basically the setup was the same and it sewed the seed for playing a half set. But I've found I prefer the odd numbered irons myself.

You need a seven iron to preserve homeostasis. Without it, you're unable to call upon your inner Tin Cup and make shots happen.

Odd or even can be a tough call, I went even myself because I love the 4 iron and PW and couldn't give those two up.

I like the 7 iron, however I can make an 8 work too.  I had to look at my least used club and it's the 9 iron...I almost never pull my 9 iron for some reason.  No clue why, just never seem to find myself at that distance.

Based on my gaps, I use evens. I prefer less trajectory on slots and allowing the ball to chase a bit. I draw (as my natural shot shape) but can work a fade if called upon.

I feel better about having a 4, 6 and eight that I can maneuver than a 50 degree, 9 and 7

Bringing my 8 club bag to Ireland with me. Should make 36 hole days easier than a full bag. Probably going to need like 900 balls though if it gets windy!

And have 75+ gram x stiff (who am I kidding, with my swing speed, xx stiff) shafts.

To help me control my spin rate.

Got my Miura half set today and took them out for a spin.  Swing was off at the start and it was a pretty ugly early season round, but by the last hole (only played 9) I was settling down and played a couple great shots to finish up with so that was nice.

Too early to know for sure but I think a little practice with then and things will be solid.  Loved the feel on the good shots and they really brought my ball flight down which was always a problem with my J40 DPCs, I hit those super high.

Love the setup of 4/6/8/P and 55 bent to 56 for my sand wedge.  Added my 913 D3 driver, 909 3w, and Byron putter to make up my 8 club set.  Have a new Cobra F8 coming to replace the 3 wood soon. So that will like be my short set for the year.  Keeping my J40s for when I want to play a full set, but that’ll probably be limited...I really enjoy playing with fewer clubs more.

For me it's more about having a lightweight bag to carry than any true desire to play minimalist golf. 8-10 clubs works really well for me but I sometimes think 7 is a good number too i.e. exactly half a full set.
For me this would be:

Driver,
20° hybrid (or fairway wood),
5 iron 27°
7 iron 35°
9 iron 43°
Sand Wedge 54°
Putter

I reckon I would still score normally with this setup but any fewer clubs I might start to struggle. If I added an 8th club I'd throw in a 50° gap wedge and swap the 54° for a 56° or 58° wedge.

Same with me...reducing the weight of the bag.

These two posts have me wondering whether I'm similarly carrying so few clubs just to save weight.  And if so, should I simply use a push cart and bring a full complement of clubs.

I use a push cart when I take all of my clubs. When I want to carry my bag, I take eight.
I absolutely carry less clubs to save weight. If using 14 clubs I use a push cart or a power cart. But there is something great about carrying your clubs in a small bag, it brings joy to the game for me, so it is truly worth carrying less clubs IMO...

I've used my push cart and 14 clubs the last few times out.  Not exactly a large sample size or scientific study, but I didn't see any difference in scoring.  The fact that I'm not any good may play into it.  But as long as I have the right clubs in the bag for the par 3s, it seems I'm good to go with a short set.

Keeping my J40s for when I want to play a full set, but that'll probably be limited...I really enjoy playing with fewer clubs more.

Those are some beautiful golf clubs! :-)

Those Miura look amazing. Good luck with your 8 clubs. I played 3 straight days on a golf trip and mainly stuck to only 8 clubs. (Dr,3w,5,7,9,gap,sw,putt) It worked great. I like not worrying about exact yardage now. If I hit a drive with less than 140 in the 9 iron came out. If around 140-160 in the 7 iron, 160-200 5 iron.  Never had to use my range finder. Just looked for the closet marker, grabbed a club and fired away. Funny thing is I think I hit more GIRs than I use to!

Thanks!  And yeah, there is something simply liberating about it.  I enjoy it for those same reasons.  It feels more “pure” to me and less fiddly. I get why others aren’t into it, but for many of us in this thread it increases the enjoyment factor.  And really, that’s the reason I play golf.

WOW, those Miura's are gorgeous!  Envy growing rapidly - hope they perform as you hope.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Walker bag
