I'm glad someone else here experiences what I do on my munis here. Slow greens destroy me, but I do quite well on fast greens they suit my game well.

A general public, run of the mill, course near me has the greens so fast it unnecessarily adds 15 to 30 minutes to most rounds.

Some humorous posts here.  As Superintendent/Director of a public golf course I used to call the stimpmeter a pace of play meter.  The faster the greens were the slower the pace.

That said, I always liked what Stan Zontek, USGA Green section agronomist use to say about greens.  There should be "speed limit" on greens based on slope, contours, type of grasses, etc.

Our greens were designed by George and Tom Fazio and were very sloped, with strong contours and sever elevation changes between sections of the greens.  8.5-9 on the stimp were ideal for public play.  We hosted two top amateur events every year and numerous state and regional qualifiers and found 10-10.5 to be perfect for tournament play....and you should have seen how long it took the daily fee players to finish as we prepared for the events.

The stimpmeter was developed to allow the Superintendent to achieve consistency of pace from green to green....not as a race to see how fast you can get them!

Jim, the retired GC Superintendent

I have yet to find greens that are faster than I care for.  I've played on some seriously fast greens.  I'm not sure what they were running, but I've played some highly regarded courses.  The killer for me is when they're rock hard.  I can't stand not being able to hold a green with a 60* from the fairway.  Soft and fast > hard and fast > hard and slow imo.

Sounds kind of like craigslist categories for women (or men, to be polihtically correct) looking for men.

But more seriously, where do you rate soft and slow (meaning golf greens)? That is what most munis are. I have taken some mighty big cuts at 20 ft putts that have come up waaaay short.

I think fast greens are great, so long as they are appropriate for the design of the green.  Some courses have incredible slopes to them, that if the greenskeeper were to try and get them running fast, the ball would never stay on the green.   I don't think any of us enjoy those kinds of green.   Fast greens are great if you can stop the ball somewhere near the hole, but not if you run past down a tier or back to your feet.  I think those are called "stupid greens".

Our greens are so fast that "when I bent over to mark my ball and put some weight on my putter in my hand my putter slid away and I almost fell over."  It's our newest 9 redone earlier in the year.  What's that gonna stimp? About 15? Maybe more? Things were downright scary.  I had a high pitching wedge hit the front of one green and go over. Balls were rolling on their own on slopes after coming to a stop.
That happens at my course, but for us it's because of the wet grass in the rain >.>

We have a green like that at my home course. It's not quite a two-tier green, but there is a top shelf, and when the greens are fast in the summer, if you roll it over the edge of that top shelf, it can roll all the way down and off the left side of the green.

Please notify the super's at Arcola CC and Ridgewood CC in NJ about this. They constantly have competitions week to week to see who can get their greens the fastest without killing them in the summer.
