Our greens are so fast that "when I bent over to mark my ball and put some weight on my putter in my hand my putter slid away and I almost fell over."  It's our newest 9 redone earlier in the year.  What's that gonna stimp? About 15? Maybe more? Things were downright scary.  I had a high pitching wedge hit the front of one green and go over. Balls were rolling on their own on slopes after coming to a stop.

Hey fellow Houstonian, where are we talking about?  Sounds like something I'd like to see.  I can think of a couple places that have done new greens...

Until I read the Sugar Creek post I thought you may have been talking about Magnolia Creek, basically my home course. The greens are always fast but right now are crazy fast. I've always thought that there is no way the greens that the pros play could be any faster than Mags.

Fast and hard are 2 different things. I like fast...but don't care for concrete.

I think we've got both on this course right now. 7 months on them and I doubt I've had to repair more than a dozen ball marks on the green.

If they're new greens they are hard because of a lack of thatch. The thatch layer is  necessary buildup of organic material that comes from plant growth. Give it a growing season or two and you'll see different results in approach shots holding greens.

Thatch is dead organic material that inhibits proper root nutrition; thatch is the primary reason why golf courses aerate.

Thatch is dead organic material that inhibits proper root nutrition; thatch is the primary reason why golf courses aerate.

You need a layer of thatch on the greens, ideally a half inch to three quarters of an inch.

Benefits of thatch layers include;
Reduction of seed germination, by keeping seeds (weeds or other undesirables) from reaching the soil.
Moisture retention (although too much thatch buildup, you will see the opposite)
Buffers soil temperatures, like a blanket
Reduction in soil compaction (Which is why OP is complaining of rock hard greens, because it is just the plant then the soil)

Too much thatch can result in...
soft, bumpy, inconsistent greens that produce slow green speeds.
A perfect breeding ground for disease, and homes to harmful insects
Reduction in air circulation, and water penetration
Reduction in fert and chem penetration, rendering what you have put down ineffective as it cannot penetrate into the soil.

There are a few other reasons thatch is bad, but you need a thatch layer.

While aeration does help manage thatch buildup, the primary reason you aerate is to reduce compaction and promote an exchange of gases. Compaction in greens can basically suffocate your roots, stunting growth and making the plant susceptible to disease. Verticutting is more effective at controlling thatch layer than aerating, because I can verticut a whole green instead of just poking holes in certain areas. Top dressing is also a way to help manage thatch layers, as the sand works through the soil profile (if you have the right size of sand) it'll help break up thatch. There is also machines aptly named, thatch reduction machines.

Ask your super at your club, see you are PGA apprentice. He/she would love to talk about the property and inform if there are any questions.

Our greens are so fast that the USGA will be at a loss now as how to measure stimpmeter speed, since they shot themselves in the foot with their new rule change, and viewers can't call in to tell them how fast they are... ... just sayin'

they could get our greens fast, but they don't because people complain.... our greens have alot of slope, too much speed and they become too difficult to putt.

Our greens are really fast, but every pin location is on a steep slope, so you can't putt on them. If you hit a putt just one foot too hard, it will roll by ten feet. I think people need to learn to put the pins in places you can putt from, not ridiculous places where a slight mishit, even sideways, costs you three strokes because you can't even putt uphill without the ball rolling back to you if you miss.

Our greens are so fast people strain their wrists trying to get the ball to the hole on downhill putts and people mutter about being stuck in heather - I'll bet everybody across the pond dreams about being stuck in Heather. ;-)

Our greens are so fast, the Highway Patrol writes speeding tickets on 4 footers.

Our greens are so fast that when you put a ball marker down on a downhill slope, the marker rolls off the green.

Wow, lucky golfers in here.

Our greens are so fast people strain their wrists trying to get the ball to the hole on downhill putts and people mutter about being stuck in heather - I'll bet everybody across the pond dreams about being stuck in Heather. ;-)
Your post made my jump for Joy!

If my wife's name was Holly, she'd find me so much more embarrassing this time of year!

I understand - that's why we are all making Mary this time of the year

Heard Tiger was out for breakfast, found Holly and Ivy!

I wonder how Heather feels about this!?

There are greens so fast in Dubai that stop lights are placed on the second cut to tell the ball to stop. I know this is true because I read it in National Enquirer at the check out line in the supermarket.

Our greens are so fast that getting through a round without a 3-putt is like shooting a 59!

That our caddies are getting roasted for "poor reads and club selection."

I love putting a 10 fter up a steep slope on a really fast green. At least you know you won't have to move much if you miss.
