Looking for feedback, opinions, or experiences going from cast GI irons to forged irons. I currently game M2 tours and was thinking of going into the P770s or the P790s. The P790s are incredible and give good distance gains, but something about the 770s feel so smooth and soft off the face.

Any advice?

The P770's are good though.....if fitted properly.

The 790s aren't true forged blade/CB.  Feel will never be anything like a true forged one piece CB.  If you really want a forged club, the P770 is the only choice between the two.

If you don't need distance help and are a good ball striker, go P770.  Or blend some P790s into the long irons if you want some help there.

I agree with the above statement. Many "forged" clubs these days are a forged chassis with a thin face dropped in. I don't think they feel any different from a modern cast club and in fact I think Ping's casting process produces clubs that feel better than a lot of clubs that use the term forged rather loosely. The type of steel used is often the same. I pay no attention to forged vs cast. It is mostly marketing these days.

With the true blades and musclebacks that are really forged, I can tell, but when I hear people talk about the forged feel of the Srixon 545/565, as just one example, it makes me chuckle because that is not a forged club in any classic sense. A one-piece forging with tungsten added to the toe is still forged IMO, but if it has a thin steel face that was attached, it is not. Can still be a great club that really performs and feels nice.

I think the difference between forged and cast is mostly between our ears. Feel is sound. As others have said, play what makes you happy.

I can attest to the 770s being great feeling irons as I have had them but, as one poster put on here they need a proper shaft fitting in them to benefit and play to your strengths.  I think you will be happy with either of them, it just comes down to what makes you happier. The 790s are fantastic irons also and do offer forgiveness and look great (IMO).

P770 feel better than P790. Had both with same shaft, can not go wrong with either. But if you like forged feeling or looking for forged P770 will be the better choice. Of course Mizunos are always around.

Really good solid advice all the way across the board---Like Ian and Hack stated they do need to be fitted properly especially shaft wise to get maximum performance for you and your game. Lawsonman sorta touched on it about the feel a lot of us old school guys learned the game playing by feel with 1 piece forged blades--- In reality in those days that was all we had until Ping--- But the bottom line is play what you want to and enjoy

I game Apex now that feel great and add forgiveness but, if I had to choose for you out of the p790 or p770 I would choose the p790 as I haven't game'd them but have hit them a ton in a sim. I do want a set as backup but will wait till crazy season is over.

When it comes to forged irons, I would go with Mizuno, Bridgestone, or Srixon. I have not tried their newer sets but forged CBs tend to play the same.

For TM, the best forged set I played were the old 2005 RAC TP Forged. It is as good as any of the forged CB sets offered by the 3 Japanese brands listed above.

I definitely would try a bit of different forged irons before settling unless you are stuck on Taylormade.

I was just having this discussion with 54putts the other day. I personally can’t tell a difference at all in forged vs cast in terms of feel.   I just went from eye 2 irons to j40s this fall. They are pretty sweet and I like the consistency of them. Mishits seems to go 80 percent or farther which is nice

Those 2005 RAC forged were a great design. The only thing I would say for an old school guy like me would be they have a harder feel than say Mizuno or Miura. Srixon or Bridgestone I have never hit so I can not give an honest opinion--- Now when I stated harder feel I did not mean a harsh feel just a little harder

If you aren't married to Taylormade there are a lot of other options.

Mizuno, Srixon, Titleist ...

Go to a big box stores if possible and hit EVERYTHING. See what you like.

I feel like if you want to go forged you should really actually go forged. Not 790’s or CF16’s. Go with like a MP-18 or x-forged.

I play Mizuno JPX 900 Tours, little more forgiving than standard forged irons.  If you are staying with TM product as stated the p770 is the more traditional model, you may consider mixing the p790 into the long iron.
I'm not a big fan of the new modern lofts ( 21* 4 iron - 40* 9 iron, etc), Typically have my Mizuno set at 3&4 iron standard loft then 5-P bent 1* weak on loft (47* pw) for more traditional iron gapping.

I do not know on the MP-18 but can solidly vouch for the 2013 X forged they hit good and that is coming from a lifelong old school forged blade man

If I was going to experiment moving to forged from GI cast... I'd take my risk on these for my experiment. At $250 you don't have much to lose.

My first set of golf clubs was the Callaway X18r's.  Cast iron.  Then I hit a forged Mizuno.  Never going back.

Agreed. I don't think there is much if any difference going from a quality cast club to a similar model that happens to be forged. I won't discount someone else's perception, but to me the "feel" difference is overblown.

The casting process has come a long way. A well struck cast club feels just as good a forged one.
