This Sunday was pretty rubbish. Played off the tips because I was with my buddy and there was a society in front of us. Riding on buggies :(. It did help slow us down a bit but not quite to their pace. Still we weren't standing around too much.

I don't mind playing off the whites but I struggled to string any decent holes together. Had a run of five bogies half way round the front but it was more than offset by a couple of triple bogies and the rest being double bogies. I only lost one ball..but it went OOB four times in total.

I'm hoping it was just the weather. It wasn't all that cold (9 degrees) but the ground was quite damp and I've noticed that my new swing doesn't work from damp ground. Obviously I'm hitting too fat a lot of the time. I did manage some very good shots but it seemed to take more concentration than I could muster most of the time.

On the 15th my first two shots were good. A fading tee that somehow managed to stay on the sloping (left down to right) fairway then an awesome 3h that went straight instead of fading so ended up well positioned on the right of the end of the fairway before a stream instead of OOB down the bottom edge of the fairway. Unfortunately I then fluffed an AW shot, performed a mediocre chip from rough at the bottom of an embankment and two putted for a double bogey. My drives were a bit random as well and I can't blame ground conditions for that.

It was just..an ugly day. Better than sitting inside starting at the TV but disappointing. 106 in the end. The worst score in twelve months. Maybe longer.

Saturday was horrible, couldn't make good contact, chunking chips etc. Yesterday almost beat my best round, had to par 17 and 18. 235 yard par 3 into the wind, I hit hybrid on right side of green, and three jack it. 18, my drive goes straight into the creek, hit 3 wood to greenside bunker, then I hit in into the other greenside bunker, and two putt, FML :censored2:

Saturday felt like this for me. Just couldnt get any kind of rhythm at all. Kept hooking all of my drives, thinning all of my irons, and couldnt putt to save my life. Not a great feeling for likely my last time out until spring.

I've decided to take a lesson this Friday. Originally I wasn't going to bother with more lessons until spring but I've decided it might be interesting to see what happens if I take a few lessons over the winter. I'm still playing most weekends so I'll still have the opportunity to practice what I'm being taught. Plus if winter is the hardest season to play maybe it's the best time to identify faults and report them to ol' teach :)

Came off a good month of consistently mid-low 70s. Feeling good about the club championship and I shoot 85-94. On the second day I hit 3 sh***s in a row, the first 2 were lost balls. Lost 7 balls on the back nine. Of course I figure out what I was doing wrong the next day, go out and play with friends, shoot 76. Wouldn’t have been good enough to win the club championship, but a lot less embarrassing.

I have to laugh at the car commercial (don’t remember which car co). Guy throws his clubs in the back muttering to himself that he’s done, had enough of the game. Then the buddy says same time tomorrow? And our guy is ready to go.

Absolutely, bad days come with the sport...actually, I'll go a step further...it comes with life.  It's hundreds of those old sayings..."you can't have the sweet without the sour" or "some days you're the hammer and some days you're the nail."

Both of these replies above capture my perspective now.  In my younger golfing days, these absolutely bad rounds would drive me insane...I would cuss, be angry the entire round and occasional you'd see one of my clubs go flying thru the air.  As I got older...I still have the really bad, meltdown rounds and I still get a bit irritated, but I convinced myself that if I have a really bad round...I'll just reward myself with a beer during the round as a reminder that my bad day is on a golf course hitting a little white ball around...given the tragedies that happen everyday...it's not that bad...

Also...when I have an off round, my buddy always laughs and says his good round is basically what my bad round looks like.

At golf ?   Yes, and many times were like nothing was right.  It's like , WOW, where did that come from...........lip out every putt and found every greenside bunker...

So as in life, many days when I was just not up to par....... hence the longer I live the more tolerant I am with the others, everyone deserves a break at one time or the other.   Kind of difficult to be forgiving at all time when the pace of life speed up in recent years, but we'll make it.   Looking forward to the 19th.

I've had these days on occasion and for me it feels as if something is physically "off" with my body.  I don't know if it's body chemistry, biorythms, karma, whatever...but some days I feel like a different person...no feel, no balance, no fluidity, etc.  I actually feel totally uncoordinated and incapable of playing the game on these rare days, and I'm a low handicap player who has won some amateur stuff and club championships, etc.

Over the summer I was in FL visiting my folks and went out to play alone at a local course. Well, I couldn't hit a shot. My score was somewhere around 85, but I picked up on several holes and lost several sleeves of balls.  Would have been over 90 if I played everything out lol!  Two days later I played with my uncle and shot 68 at his club from 6700 yards!  Totally different guy, everything flushed, in control of the ball, body feeling fluid and graceful.

Funny, when I play that well I actually cannot believe that I could be capable of playing so poorly on occasion, and vice versa.

Crazy game!

Exactly this. Every once in a while, I just feel spazzy and uncoordinated even though nothing else is wrong, and that always leads to crappy ball striking. Strangely, other times when I have been sick with a cold or tired, I play really well.
The absolute perfection of existence, life, and aesthetic beauty is the work not only of evolution but of a powerful being.

Surveying the highest 10 of the last 20 scores used to compute HDCP: I regularly find about three of the high scores come from a day that was a total bust.

The fact I played the back nine those days is what psychologists call escalating commitment to a flawed course of action.

I commented this earlier in the thread, but today it really helped me get back on track.
When I start off badly, I switch to a one-club game til I clear up, which might be the whole round.
I switch to my 3hybrid, because its length is dead in the middle bt my 44.5" driver and my 35" 56* wedge.
I tee off w it, chip w it, anything but bunkers and putting.
And if I clear up, then I go back to hitting driver and irons. If I don't, I play my most versatile club all day and just vary ball position and how fast I swing.
Works great.

A certain pre-cursor to having a round that sucks is hitting the ball great during the warm up on the range.

That is the kiss of death.

And vice - versa

I remember a day when all I did was S#@@#@K the ball on the range.  Went out and shot one of my best rounds ever.  Hit 13 GIR.

I"m still struggling if I'm a good golfer who has a days where he just stinks or a mediocre golfer who has days where he's pretty good.

I just had the worse range session a few weeks ago. I went mountain biking and went to the range right after. I was hitting 30 yard snap hooks and 70 yard block cuts with my driver. Part of it was just not giving a crap and pure laziness, but still sucked. I went to the range the day after to get it out of my system. Lol.

Shot 65 opening day of a local Open in New York. Went out that night, got drunk (as usual back then), got my normal 3 hours of passed out sleep. Woke up the next day, ready to conquer! Shot 90, and it could have been worse. My playing competitor in the last group, who I had never met, said I looked calm, cool, and under control the whole round. Not sure what happened, it was a blur.........Back to the bar, after I (as defending champion) handed him the trophy. We're good friends today, and that 90 has become somewhat legend in those parts. He's one of my best friends, has won over 40 club championships, and I've seen him shoot 91 a few times. I win!.....

We all have, but there’s one I will never, ever forget. Moon Valley Country Club, July 10th of this year, I shot a 90 on day one of the U.S. Am qualifier. I was tied for dead last with someone else who also posted a 90. If I remember correctly, I was eight back of the next worst score. Needless to say I didn’t make it to day two.

I was dealing with a couple very minor yet annoying aches and pains (I wouldn’t characterize them as “injuries”), but despite that I still have no clue how it happened as I look back today. It was literally the worst round I’ve played since I was a freshman in high school almost 20 years ago.

I finished this year around a 21 on the informal smart phone tracker. Did a read somewhere that I will shoot my handicap only 25% of the time?

That's what I think about when I finish a round, tally up the score. I try to only mark my score in the box and not think about it while playing.

I wait for the drive home to beat myself up and be miserable. The golf course is to nice a place to beat myself up.
