Took the afternoon off yesterday to play, great weather here in north Alabama. I had played Sunday and hit the ball okay. Yesterday I just plain sucked. I was hitting every kind of bad shot you can hit, with drivers, fairways, irons and wedges.

I normally can shake off a bad shot, but this just worse and worse to where I was at the point I just wanted to be finished. I considered quitting during the round....

Any mental tricks to get out of this?

Thanks

Yup, last week. Probably the worst I've played in over a year. Every single shot was off line... or thin... or fat... I think I made solid contact 4 times the whole day.

When it happens, just stop keeping score. Maybe change things up since the round is shot anyway. Tee off with a 7i on a par 5....play a little punchy 9i from 100 yards out instead of your sw/gw, etc.

The best way to get through a round like this is to start drinking! I used to take golf a lot more seriously. Now that I am lucky to play every other weekend, I usually just grab some beers and play with a couple buddies. Every once in awhile the old 8 handicap in me comes back. If not, we crank up the boom box and enjoy the 1-2 good shots we end up with.

I've had a couple of times where I went out and never felt comfortable over the shot, even putting. Felt like my setup or something was off and I played like pure crap.

Never figured out why and it would just go away by the next round.

I've had these days on occasion and for me it feels as if something is physically "off" with my body.  I don't know if it's body chemistry, biorythms, karma, whatever...but some days I feel like a different person...no feel, no balance, no fluidity, etc.  I actually feel totally uncoordinated and incapable of playing the game on these rare days, and I'm a low handicap player who has won some amateur stuff and club championships, etc.

Over the summer I was in FL visiting my folks and went out to play alone at a local course. Well, I couldn't hit a shot. My score was somewhere around 85, but I picked up on several holes and lost several sleeves of balls.  Would have been over 90 if I played everything out lol!  Two days later I played with my uncle and shot 68 at his club from 6700 yards!  Totally different guy, everything flushed, in control of the ball, body feeling fluid and graceful.

Funny, when I play that well I actually cannot believe that I could be capable of playing so poorly on occasion, and vice versa.

Crazy game!😨

Hahaha, yea, yesterday-

I was 3/10 from 10’ on my putting mat against my Oncologist when I normally am 7/10 even half blind and gripping basically one handed, I missed the toilet from 18-24” and I turned around in the elevator to exit and got disoriented and cracked my orbital(eye) against the elevator door.

I sucked...

Those days will happen-

Get some sleep, get up & do it again~

It’ll get better😉

Cheers🍻

Well described. Spend the entire round searching for that elusive “feel”.

Last week, it felt so easy, this week, it seems like I can barely figure out to get the club on the ball.

Easier to count the days I don't suck.  It was 3 rounds ago that was spectacular sucking.  Took an 11 on the first hole, short PAR 4.  I started keeping count of lost balls, 6.  I was a cool 60 at the turn.

I have not had a beer while golfing in 25 years.  I now have a formula where after 9 holes if I am 24 or more over, I'm drinking.  At the turn I caught the cart girl and bought 2 - 16oz beers.  They were gone by the time I teed off on 11 and I'm a light weight.

Played much better on the back and my partner said I was a lot more fun.

Sometimes happens to me or my dad when we're playing together. If it's just not happening, we stop keeping score and start a little game:

The round turns into match play, starting at whatever hole we start the game on.
Each person alternates choosing one club (besides putter) that both players have to use on the entire hole.

It's fun taking on a par 5 with only a 6-iron or a 130 yard par 3 with a 5 iron. Hit different shots, stop thinking about score, and keep yourself having fun in the round.

You have to define what "suck" means. I suck every round I play, but I have such a blast, I just don't care!

Yes, on more than on occasion. This year I averaged a little over 26 putts per round. On two rounds I had 40. Nothing like missing one from 18-inches on the first hole to instill confidence and set the tone for the round...

I always seen to have at least one or two rounds like that a year. What I find amazing, is that they always seem to coincide with some of my worst luck of the year. For example, landing in a divot when you finally hit a fairway, horseshoeing putts, landing on roots, hitting a sprinkler head/cart path and bouncing O.B.,  etc ...

Drinking and learning to laugh at your misfortune is the best way to handle it!

Of course, who hasn't?!?!?!, I remember I was hovering around 5hcp, played with my regular Saturday group at our home course (which I normally used to shot no worse than 76), I managed to shot a 90, all bogies not one par, hit 2 fairways, no GIRs and two putted everything, rough day but fun, since my buddies were giving me so much flak it was funny...

A certain pre-cursor to having a round that sucks is hitting the ball great during the warm up on the range.

I finally got down to a single digit hcp over the summer, then realized I can't get any lower with my broke-@$$ swing, so hello swing change. I've been working on a better takeaway for the past month now in order to get into a better position at the top and create some width in my swing. It feels so bad and I've been playing 88-90 during the ordeal with an occasional 81-82 thrown in to give me some encouragement.  It's so hard playing through a change.

Yup....it happens.  Last one was late July to early August.  Out with my regular weekend guys.  On a Saturday every shot was like my shorts were on backward.  I shot a 95.  The same guys again & it is the next day, Sunday.  I shot an 82.  Then had one day in golf league this year also.  League is 9 holes.  My normal is 39-43.  Well one night I turned in a 58.  Right now I can almost start laughing about it again.  On one hole I normally tee off with a 4 iron.  That night I looked at my partner & wanted to bet him I could try my driver & not even be close to where I usually end up.  He knew it was a sucker bet, but had to try.  I was lucky if it made 150....but it was in the fairway!!!  It was the only fairway I think I hit that night.  It happens....move on.

My score for 9 holes can be 38 ( personal best) or 48 (real bad).
Usually it's 41-44.
There are days when I can do no  wrong.
The bad days feel like  I've  never played before or, I'm  using clubs fitted for someone else.
Those bad days are aggravating.
Keep going back. After a bad day, I usually have a great round the next time.

Ha! It's the opposite for me.  I suck all the time.  It's when I have that occasional 76 to 79 that pops up that I can't explain.
