Saw a post on Tour talk about some classics playing St Andrews with a five iron only. Made me think a bit as to what club I'd take if limited to one, and also what score I'd likely post.

I'm torn between a 7i and a 5h. The 5h would be a no brainer if I could stay out of greenside bunkers. I hit it almost 50 yards more than the 7i and it would be great comparatively for chipping from just off and putting.

Let's set the yardage at 6500 as that can make a huge difference and make it as a standard everyday muni. Some bunkers but maybe an average of 1.5 greenside bunkers per hole with almost no FW bunkers.

The 5h has the advantage off the tee for sure. Would probably putt better with it and chip from just off better. It would be no help if I had to fly a bunker from 50 yards out and would be a struggle to hold any green with unless I was within 10 yards of a full shot.

The 7i is short off the tee but gives me the ability to alter loft and hit just about every shot from 165 in. If I found myself in a bunker I wouldn't cry and ask for momma even though it'd be far from ideal. Putting and short chips would be slightly harder too.

I'm going with the 7i. I'd expect to be right around 100 given this as my only club. I think that this would be a more consistent score than with the 5h. If I could stay out of trouble with that I think my potential score would be lower. Find any trouble  though and it's a dead man walking situation.

So what are you taking and what are you shooting with it?

6i.
Shoot a 59 using #GolfWRX Sauce.

Without #WRX Sauce, probably about 95-100, depending on how many bunkers I end up it, and how well I manage to putt with the 6i. I'm guessing I'll 3-putt over half the holes for a double.

A group of us went out on my home course and played from our 6300 yard tees. I took only a 7 iron and shot 3 over 39 but ran out of daylight to continue our nice little money game we had going after playing 10 and 11. We were going to go out and do it again late fall to get all 18 in but never made it happen unfortunately.

We do a lot of 1 club events with the guys that I play with so most guys are shooting somewhere just a few higher than they normally would but are also all low single digit to plus cap guys who are very comfortable hitting all kinds of shots with various clubs.

5-wood.  I don't know what my score would be, but it would be fun to try to hit a little bump 70 yard 5-wood.

I have a hickory set, and one time I took my brassie and my mashie and played a quick 18 holes.  And I mean quick.  No decision making required.  Putting was tough, but I think that it was easier with the brassie.
On Sundays, I used to play hickory

Agree on the 7 iron, enough length to get it there and enough loft to stop it.

7 iron. I am a horrible shot shape guy but I've played enough 3 club events on par 3 courses to be able to open it up and hit a wedge looking shot, and how to hit a low hook to roll out to 190 ish if needed. As for score... I would probably shoot for 100, and if I broke that I would be happy. If I could stay out of the bunker, 90's might be possible on a good day.

Likely a 7 iron as well. I feel it would be a total disaster out of a bunker, or if I had a long tee shot over water, but it is versitile enough. Iíd probably learn a thing or two.

I would probably go with a 6i. At 6500 yds, most part 4s will be 360-380 and a nuked 7i just wouldn't get me there comfortably. Should be easy to avoid bunkers and other penalty shots though, so I would expect to shoot normal scores or a bit better. Definitely going to try it this next summer.

To the original post and some of the guys who have done it, I'm assuming a putter as well? Or no?

I played a par-3 course with a 52 and a 7i one time, no putter. Had fewer putts with that 52 than I would have with my old faithful.

If you think hitting greens in reg. with a whole bag of clubs is difficult, doing so with one club is even harder. Plan on going for the green in one more than gir. and youíll have better chance, in my view. Even then, youíre still going to miss greens and will have to play chips, pitches and sand shots. Oh, yeah....putting.
This all means using a short club (7-9, maybe even a pw). Even if youíre hitting all partial shots on the 3rd shots, for me, thatís going to be a lot easier with a short iron than a hybrid, or a wood. And good luck getting out of a greenside bunker with a 5wood.
On the greens, unless you come up with some weird mess that works, youíre going to be chip-putting. I think thatís easier to do with a 7iron.
I also think this is a lot easier with a blade, too.
