Since I'm pretty much shutting down my golf this year to weather and a nagging shoulder injury, it looks like I'll end my 25th year of playing golf without a hole in one. Thought it might be fun to hear stories about how close you got from others who are still waiting on that elusive ace.

I came really close this year. Our 18th hole is 210 yard par 3 over a ravine, with the green next to the bar patio. It's a tough hole, as most of the members jokingly refer to it as the easiest par 5 on the course. During one of my match-play rounds, I ended up about a foot from the hole. When we got to the green, several of the guys at the bar informed that my ball had actually hit the hole and lipped out. Would have been a cool hole to finally get mine on!

At least I made birdie on my close call, though. One of the guys I play with flew a ball into the hole on a par 3 but hit the liner, and the ball shot out and ended up in a fried egg lie in a bunker 25 yards away.

It has been a loooooong time since I hit the ball within even 3' on a par 3.

Honestly, I can't recall doing it a single time this year (~105 rounds). In fact, I am almost certain I never hit a par 3 approach within 5' all season!

Outside of par 5s, I've only hit balls to kick-in distance a few times this year. I do hit a lot of shots in the 9'-16' range, but those are still tough birdies that require a great putt. Annoying.

About a month ago, my 3rd round with my new i200s, I hit a 6 iron to a 163 yard pin - the ball was tracking the hole way, hit and stopped on a dime 6 inches short.  Damn Bridgestones :)

Hit the flag three times on par threes this year. Only one ended with birdie because golf is golf and the flagstick shot the other two 15+ feet away.
Also lipped out twice from spinning it back a hair and hitting the edge of the hole. Stuck quite a few within a couple feet but never got one to go down so I stay without an ace.
Missed a few albatross' by the same story. Hit the flag from 210 after a hop and shot it off 20 feet or so, missed a few dunks by inches and only got a few to stick within a couple of feet for a tap in eagle.

Landed about 15 feet behind the hole and ended up a few rotations short. From the tee it looked like it was definitely going in.

Never had one and I had many more close calls when I didn’t play as much or very well. This year even though I had more GIRs than ever before the closest I ever got was maybe 6 ft. This year I just decided to go for the middle of the green regardless of
where the pin was. Helped my scores but no close calls.

The one I almost had was not pretty haha. It’s the third hole at my course playing about 160ish yards (I don’t have a range finder) so I almost always hit 7 iron. Well I hit a realllly skanky low 7 iron that landed short of the green. There is this hill in front of the green as well that covers up some of the front so I couldn’t see the ball. Next thing I see is the ball tracking towards the hole, and it hit the lip hahah

A couple times this year I've had birdie putts of less than a foot on par 3's.  I also hit the flag stick on a par 3 this fall, but ended up with a double because the ball bounced into a basically unplayable lie in a bunker.  I did hole out for eagle with a wedge on a par 4 this summer.

This is from about 185.  Knocked it 3 feet and worst part is that I missed the birdie and parred the hole.

Always tough for me to tell due to poor eyesight, but last April playing in Chicago with DP4, VNutz and BMan I had one they all thought lipped out, it ended about a foot and a half away. I’ve had a couple others that have looked good leaving the cub, and a couple kick ins, but I think that was the closest.

It was a short and slightly uphill 110 yarder.  The green was angled a bit uphill also.  I poked a 50 degree wedge perfectly on line.  It landed just short right of the flag, bounced forward about three feet past the hole, and proceeded to spin back.  It looked perfect.  At this time I screamed, "THAT'S GOING IN!" to my playing partner.  Just then the ball fell halfway in and lipped out stopping about two feet left of the hole.  Funny part was I wasn't angry or disappointed.  It was an awesome tap in bird!

Not only was that was the closest I've ever come to an ace, it was the first time I actually thought the ball had a chance of going in.

45+ years and counting.

Close call on a 9 iron this year. Ball mark was less than 3 feet in front on the hole. Ball was 2 feet behind the hole. A string connecting them would have bisected the hole. Still not sure how that didn't go in.

It would have been a nice ace since it would also have tied a skin. A player in the comp two groups ahead of us had an ace on that same hole.

I also had this one I threw over the flag on a 135 yard par 3 and spun back to where it is in the picture. Don’t know how it didn’t go in. And another 135 par 3 I hit the flag stick in the air about a foot above the hole and spun it back to five feet. Missed the birdie putt...

same here.  thousands of rounds, never one.  ive holed out approaches on par 4s a few times, but never a real one.

edit: hit a couple of sticks this year, one flew into bunker and i couldnt get down, bogey.  another settled about 4 paces and uneventful par.

Almost had one yesterday! 168 yard par 3 (atleast that’s what it says, I don’t have a range finder) into the wind. I decided to hit a low draw and it ended up 4 feet from the hole. The whole time my playing partners were yelling for it to go in. Would’ve been awesome for my first ever!

About an inch. We couldn't see it from the tee box, but the group ahead of us started shouting. Then they moved a bit to the side and gave me the no good gesture. From their angle they thought I made it. We didn't think anything of it until they started yelling. Oh well, maybe eventually! I've holed out for eagle multiple times from the weeds, but still haven't gotten one to drop from groomed tee box.
