In Massachusetts, today is the last day one can post a round for HI purposes. Will have to wait until April 1st to post another one. Played 169 "official" rounds this season.

4.5 months seems like a long time. Time to break out the old putter, and the so-so golf balls. lol

Are the courses closed? Can you still play without posting? We are lucky here in NC, and can play all year. I'd go nuts if I had to take a 4.5 month break every year.

How do they decide when to end a season for handicap posting?
Is it USGA that decides?
Talent is the desire to practice

Don't know about OP's home course, but most courses are still open.  First wave closes after thanksgiving, most close as weather drives it some time in December - but almost always before New Year.  There are some cape cod public courses that try and stay open all winter.

I hope to get another half dozen rounds before putting clubs in basement.  Biggest challenge is frost delays keeping you off course until after 10:00am and sunset at 4:30!  Tough to golf and golf down a job with that daylight!

Yes. However, that can be a mixed bag. Did you ever hit a great approach only to watch it bounce off a frozen green like it hit concrete and end up in a hazard? Or, try to get a tee into frozen ground? lol

I don't know. Since it is a USGA handicap system, I would opine that the USGA does dictate when a season ends for any particular state.

I played today and it was chilly (43), windy and cloudy. The fairways were extremely soft, and the ball didn't travel as far. I am guessing they don't want folks posting because weather/course conditions, would be such that a score posted would not reflect a golfer's true ability.

Yes! I played last weekend. Our tee time was for 7:32 (first group), and we didn't tee off until around 9:30. I've made the trek down to the Cape a few times...of for no other reason not to see any snow on the ground. lol

It is by region. The reasoning is that conditions are apt to be such that scores do not reflect a golfer's potential under normal conditions. I reckon you can turn in scores shot in Florida all year.

Some places will stay open or open for a day here and there if the weather is cooperative. Two or three years ago I played in northern Mass on December 23rd when we got a random 55 degree day.

Your local governing golf association determines what is “in season” and what’s not.

Here on the Great Plains our posting season ended yesterday. And I really don’t care. It’s supposed to be 74* tomorrow. The fact that I can’t post the round hardly means the season is over.

Kudos to you Sir.  Very jealous!  It'll be in the low 40's here on Saturday and you know where we'll be.  Hope you're well!

Notice on CDGA website.

Winter score posting rules are in effect. Per USGA guidelines, rounds played within the Chicago District between Nov. 1 and March 31 are not to be posted for handicap purposes.

So if I play in Florida during the winter, scores can be posted for handicap.

I may have played my last round outdoors for the year yesterday, windy and temp in the mid to high 40's, only 9 holes but not as uncomfortable as I expected. The balls feel a little more rock like and it is mentally challenging to take 1-2 clubs more approaching greens, even 3 into the wind. But the first hole I took my normal club, hit it well and it looked good in the air, and dropped more than 5 yards short of the green.

The two public courses near me both shut down around Thanksgiving, and reopen sometime in April. The clubhouse is locked at one, the other has indoor simulators and their driving range has 20 bays with mats and overhead heaters under a shed roof that's open weather permitting. It's pretty bleak up north for golf, and it's daunting to think about starting over somewhat relearning your swing next Spring.

Sadly Winter Handicap Rules have gone hand-in-hand with rainy cold weather today in Chicago. Since many of my rounds are as a single, the USGA doesn't like my scores much anyway. At least one course on the Lake is open as long as snow isn't on the ground ..... although today is apparently the normal first day of measurable snow fall in Chicago. Guess I will have to save up some $$ for a trip to somewhere warmer or get my kicks watching Golf Channel.

Not to nit pick Sir but your scores should be posted if you're playing anywhere in season.

There were probably less than 10 people on the course last Saturday and it was hit the ball and go.  Gotta enjoy that!

Thanks DP. Heck low 40’s just keeps the course nice and empty. You’re kind of in my boat right now with VNutz gone. My group is gone too. Have one guy left here right now.

V is back from his trip but making the smart decision to invest in some family time this weekend.

There were probably less than 10 people on the course last Saturday and it was hit the ball and go.  Gotta enjoy that!

Dead calm yesterday, somewhere between 65-70 degrees, course is still in good shape. I got to the course a little late so one group went out on #1. So buddy and I, started on 10. Each of us in our own cart, teed off at about 12:15, In my car pulling out of the lot a little before 2:00. Possibly best day of the year, and no one out taking advantage.

I live in Texas and can post all winter, but it's funny...

The past 2 years, my index has tanked through March, but by April, it pretty much resembles whatever it was in November (before "winter" conditions made it harder to score).

Hey, hey, hey. I'm still here, it's just that my clubs aren't. :(

Did you ship them out there?

Are the courses closed? Can you still play without posting? We are lucky here in NC, and can play all year. I'd go nuts if I had to take a 4.5 month break every year.

Seems like most courses close at the end of November, but there are a few that stay open until the first snowfall and even others that stay open all year.  Just played last weekend in 30 degree weather (at best) and as long as you dress correctly, in layers, you can play all year.  It's not the best conditions but I'll be playing all through the winter and dreaming of warmer weather in the spring.  Off to the range tonight too.
