Iím headed to Cabo for the week of Thanksgiving. I received an email from my airline (United) that there are restrictions on baggage size and no baggage over 62Ē (W+D+H) is allowed.

Has anyone experienced this or received a similar notification lately? If these restrictions are as clear cut as they sound, itís currently forbidden to bring golf clubs to Mexico unless you ship them. Iíd think this would be a pretty big issue.

Iíve called United customer service and was only able to speak with someone that I could hardly understand and definitely did not understand my concerns. Iíve tried calling Cabo Del Sol, Iím sure they would have some advice but I havenít gotten through yet.

Hopefully Iím misunderstanding these luggage policies because renting clubs will put a damper on this vacation.

Which airline? I believe I flew United and never heard of this.

Also, if your bag is actually longer than 62'', consider buying another smaller one? Mine is fairly compact, it's just barely longer than a standard cart bag , enough so that hybrids or long irons are okay, but drivers and 3w don't totally fit. When I fly, I disconnect all my wood heads and place them inside the actual cart bag, and then wrap the shafts in some towels and place them in the travel case. This small travel bag was still enough to fit everything I needed.

I'm still working on figuring this out. My bag isn't longer than 62", but adding together width, length and height, its closer to 80" total (club glove travel bag). On United's website it says golf equipment isn't subject to oversize baggage fees, but I cant find anything about golf clubs and oversize restrictions at any airport in particular.

Tried customer service again, pretty frustrating when they read the website's content back to you as their answer to your question. :russian_roulette:

Well all I know is that for me, it was more weight restricted than total volume of luggage. I think United was something like say 50lb limit of checked bags, and I had my regular clothing plus the bag, so I had to pay a fee to check the golf bag. Wasn't much I think a few dozen dollars... certainly less than shipping the clubs via FedEx or renting a whole set down in that country.

Most airlines have this size restriction, but then offer "exceptions" to the rule to allow a golf bag (or ski bag, etc.) as one piece of checked luggage. You can find details online at the airline website.

That's not to say something has changed with baggage rules to Mexico... You should
definitely persue an answer with United.

^ right which is why I had to pay like $40 to check my golf bag. I had my clothing as 1 bag (free) then paid for the golf stuff. However it was a weigh limit.. like you get  1 free bag up to say 50 pounds, then any weight after, or a 2nd bag was subject to a fee.

This is just a thing United (and other airlines) does now and again, to help protect against surges in checked bags during the holidays. Here's the specific page, if you've not seen it yet:
https://www.united.c...ge/embargo.aspx

That link lists specific items of sporting equipment that are not allowed during an embargo, of which golf clubs are NOT listed.

FYI United's special items / sports equipment page:
