It's no wonder retail clothing stores like Macy's, are closing at a rapid pace.
I went to the mall tonight for the first time in about 2 years only because my wife had to make a quick run to one of the stores there. I figured I would take a walk to Macy's to see if they had any closeout golf apparel. It was an absolutely disgusting scene to see the condition of the store the way it looked. And I was flabbergasted to see what the employees were wearing.
It wasn't long ago that I worked at a Macy's subsidiary called filene's. I was required to wear a tie every single day to work.
Retail has absolutely lost the classiness that it had in yesteryear

Millennials don't like to get dressed up, ties are too uncomfortable for them.  I avoid Macy's and most box stores because their prices are over list on most golf gear.

Von Maur has that classy appeal that you are looking for.  They have a piano player, nice bathrooms, professional looking sales folks...nice experience

And I find amazing clearance deals on the shirts that are like 60-80 at Carls and Miles, Golf Galaxy...

Did you work in the basement at Filene's?

I laughed when I saw a table full to the brim of Greg Norman short sleeve polo shirts all at full retail prices. Perhaps Macy's didn't realize that New England actually gets cold during the winter months and perhaps they should discount them

I vividly remember filene's basement but no, I worked at one of the non-basement filene's stores.
Was the basement a discount store?

Nordstrom’s is another exception in the brick-n-mortar retail space IME. It’s the only department store I still pay a premium to shop at IF I actually want/need customer service. Their floor people still know what they’re selling.

Good point about Nordstrom.
They seem to stay above the fray with their quality store appearance and customer service

I hate shopping and  can't stand going to a mall.  My Nordstrom personal shopper calls me twice a year, knows what I like, and in 15 minutes it's done.  Such a great service.

They in fact have golf clothes.
But unfortunately they have very few offerings.
Nike, Adidas,Izod and Greg Norman are the four golf lines they carry.

I have several Greg Norman shirts from Macy’s. I like them a lot. But no, they weren’t on sale this weekend at the Loveland, Co store either. But I did get a couple Under Armour workout tee shirts for $12 each.

Didn’t notice how the staff was dressed. Everyone of them was so friendly and helpful I doubt I would have cared.

Well lesson learned I guess.  I just checked out their online website and it had some ok stuff. I know the Macy's by me is a sh$$ hole so I wouldn't even try it.

Honestly I've been finding really good deals on various Nike pieces from either their website or TGW.com.

Pretty much everything in my closet has a shark on it somewhere, and all of it came from Macy’s, whether brick and mortar or online.  Never pay full retail, since their polos can be had for $25 all day, every day.  Tee shirts are usually $10-$15.

Early Greg Norman polos had the problem of collars curling at the tips; the last few years, they’ve been fine.  The quality and fit (shirts, pants, and outerwear) are very good, especially for the price.

Come to think of it, I should have a couple of shirts in the mail today.

1st problem was you went to Macys to buy golf specific clothes. they do have stuff and I have bought plenty from Macys but I wouldn't go there looking for deals or big selection.

Most of these stores cater to the younger crowd and women,  my wife can go to the mall every weekend.

I admit to being older, but I too do not like the causal look most employees sport these days. In certain professions it’s appropriate, but I like it when the representative looks better dressed than the customer.

It was a pet peeve of mine when my children were in school and I would go to parent - teacher conferences or other functions. Students in my era were dressed better than my kids teachers. It was hard for me to take them seriously dressed in their jeans and t-shirts.

I used to teach a class on how to get hired / promoted, and dressing appropriately for the position your seeking was one of the basics. If you were interviewing for an entry level position you didn’t need to wear a three piece suit, but it was a good idea to be dressed equal to those conducting the interview.

Dress for success. Now get off my lawn.

It's all a balancing act to protect the bottom line. It doesn't take a genius to know that they want their stores to be profitable. But here's the problem every store has been running on the last few years. As a former large retail store manager, I'll roll it out for you. Corporate has set lofty goals for you. Regardless that traffic is down every day, your sales goals are up over last year because that's the only way the grey hairs at corporate know how to do it. Why would we ever strive to do worse than we did last year? Your inventory was purchased 9-12 months earlier, you have to keep the lights on, you're held to being open to the mall's hours. There is almost only one thing that you can control in real time. Unfortunately, that one thing is payroll. I promise you that almost every store you walk into today is on a "do more with less" program. It's really unfortunate and the service and presentation in every store takes a hit. Pair that with the fact that 25% of the people scheduled that day probably didn't show up either. And they likely won't be fired because they can't find anyone to replace them either. Your best best is to find out what day the store has a regional or corporate visit and you'll probably get the shopping experience you want on that day. Any other day, all bets are off.

I've had very good at Macy's for both Greg Norman and Izod golf clothing.  To be honest though they typically don't have much in stock, but you can usually find a good sale on the clothing and many times I've found GN clothing for much less than anywhere else.  There's always sales and if you can find your size you can usually find a bargain.

Hey, you know that other store in the mall...Hot Topic? The one that is mainly involved with music and pop culture? Used to be a lot of punks and kids wearing all black?

This is what I dressed like to work there.

Posted Image

I was only 22 at the time. People not dressing up to work at Macy's? That has nothing to do with an age group, or the type of job. It just means those certain individuals you saw have no standards to which they hold themselves. I like dressing nice and looking good, even if a job doesn't call for/require it.

Macy's has some nice, Shirts, jackets, Pants and Shorts for Golf. They are good for comfort on the course, nothing special, if you can get at a good price it is worth it.

I bought two nice Greg norman shirts at local macy's  last week for 8 dollars each.

Thats a good deal especially since the regular price for the sharks shirts are $100

The Greg Norman stuff at Macy's is private label. If they say $100 on the tag (which I'd be surprised) it's just to show a crazy perceived value because they're always on sale. Of course, everything is only worth what someone is willing to pay but, those shirts are on par with most $29 golf polos. There's nothing wrong with them at all, but they're definitely not $100 shirts.
