I use the Sharpie  Chisel point in Red or Green . The wide line , looks better and last a long time.

Iíve never marked a ball in my life. Ever.
Out of curiosity, why does everyone feel the need to?

Well if you play in competitions placing a unique mark on your ball allows unambiguous identification essentially preventing a whole host of potetial rules violations.  In casual play it is a good idea as it prevents arguments over who's ball is who's between the fairways.  My mark serves double duty as my putting alignment aid.

And while it is not required, the USGA in the Rules of Golf, strongly encourage it.

R6-5. Ball - The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball.

R15-3. Wrong Ball in Match Play - If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he loses the hole.
Wrong Ball in Stroke Play - If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes.

D27/10 Player Unable to Distinguish His Ball from Another Ball
Q. A and B hit their tee shots into the same area. Both balls were found but, because A and B were playing identical balls and neither had put an identification mark on his ball, they could not determine which ball was A's and which was B's. What is the ruling?
A. Since neither player could identify a ball as his ball, both balls were lost - see Definition of "Lost Ball."
This incident underlines the advisability of the player putting an identification mark on his ball - see Rules 6-5 and 12-2.
Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play a round of competitive golf.

I guess I just always take a poll at the first tee: ďWhatís everyone playing today?Ē
To date (18-20 years of playing), Iíve yet to run across a situation where me and another player had the same ball with the same number. Iíve never been a Pro V1 player so that may help and  donít play in tournaments, often.

You could also have an issue with a ball from another group on a parallel hole.

Or another group that simply played anytime before you that lost that brand/number ball.

I use many colored sharpies and I usually don't remark them.  That said, I do get ink on my clubs and rubbing alcohol takes it right off.

I would suggest a marker that is water proof, or at least resistant , my markings easily last 3 rounds in dry weather and a whole round if wet

The "metallic" sharpies last forever.  Silver looks good on a colored ball.

Everything else comes off after 9 holes or so.

I am currently testing the Extreme and the Industrial Sharpie markers to see if they hold up any better than a regular Sharpie.

As of right now, it appears the Industrial Sharpie is the winner. But I need to play more to make sure.

And I haven't tested the Sharpie metallic oil markers. I will give those a shot.

Out of curiosity, why does everyone feel the need to?

A few reasons:

1) I don't play the same brand and type of ball consistently. I may have 2-3 different balls in my bag at any given time. Marking prevents me from being caught in a situation in which I didn't look when switching balls from being caught unaware of what ball is mine if I'm trying to locate it in the fairway or rough.
2) It can be easier to identify your ball from a distance or in weird lies or in bunkers.
3) Even if you do play the same type of ball, as others have said you aren't the only person to ever play a ProV1x #3 on your course. It helps you know which ball is yours even when you do know the type and number.

I've  started using a 'Markal' marker. This is what the salvage yards and metalworkers use.
I apply it and my mark stays  on.

Blue Sharpie stays on the longest for me.  I use a sharpie line through the Logo for putting and dots on the other side for identification.

I always mark up ahead of time and keep in sleeves until use.

NEVER had to reapply and I've had the same pen nearly 15 years now. Magic!

I use the Callaway Truvis Yellow/Black and put 1, 2 or 3 blue dots on the side stamping.

Seems to hold up pretty well, depending on how shaky I am from the night-before's activities.
