The Houston Open is currently sponsored by Shell Oil, but that sponsorship is about to expire after 2017. Don't see any announcement  of a replacement sponsor.

Now the Colonial in Ft. Worth, TX is about to suffer the same fate with Dean and Deluca considering pulling out.

Just wondering how much does a corporation has to pony up to the PGA Tour to become the title sponsor of a tour stop?

Also, is money the only consideration or other factors matter as well?

Lastly, if a replacement sponsor can't be found then the 2018 season would be shortened by two events?

For the Colonial is appears to be $11 million per year.

http://www.star-tele...e179696551.html

"The PGA wants a little more than $11 million per year from a sponsor for this event, which, per multiple sources, effectively eliminates several companies from landing Colonial. The price tag is roughly $3 million too rich for many companies."

A member at the course I work at is connected to Dean/Deluca, they've already pulled out.

TPC Potomac hosted the Quicken Loans last year and was suppose to this year at Congressional. The sponsorship dropped since it was the last year of the contract. Pretty sure the average sponsor pays 10-15 million to put their name on a golf tournament.

What would be the Quicken is now coming back to Potomac, however there is no sponsor yet. If there isnt there is talk that the PGA will sponsor the tournament

Iím gonna also go on a whim and argue that companies interested may get a fire sale deal if they sign a week or two before hand for 2-3 years effectvily making this year weakened for advertising (no constant chatter with the brand name in I.T etc ) but also much cheaper

Not only are there 2-3 soonsorless tournaments, there looks like there is going to be contraction of a tournament or two also to make way for the PGA Championship move to May and an earlier ending of the playoffs

It's worse than I thought.

The Colonial will be around in 2018, but it's not a sure thing for 2019 and the PGA Tour doesn't seem to be all that worried about it.

How could the Tour even consider losing The Colonial? Great course and great history.

Roll back the ball, it’s  built like a linebacker.

Oh wait, wrong thread.

It really seems like a super steep price to keep a company’s name “out there”. I can see the financial services companies, car companies, and maybe, big maybe, John Deere, doing it for the obvious exposure, but Dean & DeLuca, Safeway, Barbasol? It seems like those are obvious candidates to move on from this yearly commitment.

Or y’all gonna tell me you gonna buy groceries based on the golf sponsorship?

I think we will see a general decrease of sponsorships and money in general when the Tiger effect will be over in the next few years, companies are not that interested anymore in spending gazillions of dollars for this, but hopefully I will be wrong, we will see

Look at past ratings and fields for those events and that may shed some insight as to why they aren't being renewed.  Dean & Deluca is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, not a great weekend for golf ratings.

I agree there might be a last minute fire sale for anyone willing to sponsor it, I'm sure someone will step up from Texas, maybe Dell.

It would be interesting to hear their pitch.  National t.v. exposure is expensive, but title sponsorship isn't that effective of exposure IMO.

Board members used to play a lot of golf, to sponsor a tourney and get a bunch of spots in the pro am and hospitality tents would have been a no brainer, but we're entering a different era.

While anything is possible Dell already is a sponsor for two high profile events on the PGA Tour. The WGC Match Play event in Austin and a FEC Playoff event in Boston.

Only 1% of companies think that the PGA Tour is the most attractive sport to sponsor, the lowest of all major American sports, according to a recent survey. I can see sponsorships stalling slightly, but then the PGA Tour is already looking at new markets, for example look at how much money was going for the event in South Korea.

It's a huge investment for a company and it may become a problem if the PGA Tour prices themselves out of the market. Tour Pros should also be grateful for having so much money to play.

I can see why the PGA Tour often removes the original name of the tournament; to keep their corporate sponsors happy. It's irritating though and today's tournaments are losing their heritage. The Waste Management, the Farmers, the Genesis, the Dean and Deluca. Seriously?

American pro sports held the fort for years when it came to minimal sponsors on jerseys (NBA), but cash is king and nothing is stopping this train

I think they should freeze the PGA purses and start building up the web.com purses.  If they did this and offset the scheduling a little they could have two powerful marketing platforms.

Without stars, you can build up the Web.com all you want and it wonít ever be powerful. Heck, people really only care about the top-30 on the PGA Tour let alone those ranked 150-275.

They could raise purses now.  They donít want them higher.  There are state open that pay out more than some Web.com events.  The guys sponsoring PGA Tour Canada want to raise all the purses to near Web levels and were told no.

It's impossible to promote the Web.com Tour when the PGA Tour has 49 tournaments. If it had 35, then it would be easier.
