Hey guys,

Family is heading out to Kauai, Hawaii for a week after New Years. All of us play, handicap's ranging from a 5 to 25+....

Was hoping for some recommendations on the island's courses -

Looking at:

The Course at Princeville-Makai (I believe this is on the other side of the island from our place, worth the drive?)
Poipu Bay
Ocean Course at Hokuala
Puakea
Wailua (looks like a great deal, curious about conditioning)

Did I miss any? Any worth playing twice? My dad and I are looking to play everyday or close to it, the rest of the gang less so.

Appreciate it!

We will be there mid jan. We stay in poipu and play poipu bay every year. Resort course its nice not usually overcrowded. We just dont drive to north shore from poipu.

I've played both Makai and Poipu Bay.  If you are staying down in Poipu, play there.  If it is your first trip to Kauai, I'd take in some of the sights rather than play every day...

Sounds like Poipu is the move, thanks for the responses!

Poipu, Makai, and the Ocean Course at Hokuala (formerly Kauai Lagoons) are all no-brainers, with Kauai Lagoons being my personal favorite.

Puakea is a really underrated track in my opinion. It won't wow you with any ocean views like the other 3, but is a very fun and interesting layout that has always been in good shape, and worth a play in my opinion.

Wailua is the definitely the favorite amongst locals, so prepare yourself for a slow round. I have played 3 times, every one of them about 5.5 hours. There are some cool holes with nice views, but I would personally play Poipu, Makai, or Hokuala 2 or 3 times each before playing Wailua.

I would highly recommend driving to the north side of the Island even if you don't play Makai. The Kalalau Trail Is indescribably awesome. I promise you will not be disappointed taking a day out of your trip to drive up there. We stay up there because it is just so beautiful and is far less crowded than Poipu or Kapaa. That being said, Makai is a great course and has views not really rivaled by Poipu Bay, however, Poipu is a superior course minus the views. I'm jealous though man savor every minute of it.. Kauai is a special place. Eat at Bubba's Burgers!

Definitely take in the views, Kauai is beautiful, in terms of golf, yes I agree Poipu Bay is amazing and very green and mentioned above not many breathtaking views...I lived in Hawaii for six years and played almost if not every course on the islands, loved it, enjoy the time in Hawaii...

I spent 5 days in Kauai, stayed in Princeville but we travelled all around the island for various excursions. It's only 45 min to an hour from the resorts on the southern end. I didn't play a single round. I had the opportunity to play Makai at Princeville for a discounted rate but there was just so much else to do on the island, I was really not tempted.

I guess what I'm saying is I agree with the group that is saying I'd recommend making sure you have plenty of time for non-golf activities. It is a really special island and worth exploring some.

I'll be heading over there in a little over a month. Planning on playing Puakea. We're staying in Poipu, but the wife is just beginning, so want to keep it to a cheaper/easier course. Will post a review after we play.

Can't thank you guys enough, this has been very helpful!

Looking to play (usually) at the crack of dawn, leaving plenty of time for island exploration -have a hike or two, surf lessons, and a sailing day lined up but on that note -if you guys had any specific recommendations, would love to hear em!

Have played all of the courses (except for Kukui ula, the private club in Poipu) multiple times over the years and would rank them in order:

Prince Course
Poipu Bay
Ocean Course at Hokuala
Princeville-Makai
Puakea
Wailua
Kiahuna GC in Poipu
Kukuiolono

Puakea is a decent track for the price and was in good condition. Itís not a top tier course but if your expectations are in line with what it is youíll have a good time. Some cool views on the back 9. I didnít play any others when we were in Kauai so canít comment on them.

Get a puka dog while in poipu. Also Kauai brewing has some good beers and surprisingly good food.

Helicopter tour in Kauai was one of the coolest things Iíve ever done. We used Island Helicopters.

Helicopter tour definitely worth it. Especially if this is your first time to Kauai. Not cheap but worth it. Boat tour that leaves from South side and takes you west along the Napali coast is also worth it. Best part of Kauai for me is to have no plans whatsoever. We may book tee times or maybe a tour ahead of time but for the most part it is... "well what do you want to do today? Beach? Golf? Hike?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Prince Course is now closed, right? Shame. Would much rather have seen Makai closed, having played both.
