The modern golfer prefers an untucked shirt, wears vans shoes and a 59fifty hat (sometimes backwards). If it's chilly he'll wear a hoody. He won't wear golf pants (Not sure what to call the pants on pick #4). He prefers a "street-style" look. He looks down on people who use stock head covers ("you have no style if yo use (them)"). He will carry and will be sporting either a jones or stitch bag with seamus head covers. The modern golfer is allowed to play in 99.9% of the golf courses in the USA (including my home course). Below are some pics of the modern golfer.

I love it when one person speaks for an entire "generation" of golfers.  The OP is giving himself more credit than he deserves being an "influencer".

How do those Vans hold up in early morning, wet conditions?  They make moisture-wicking socks too?  Regarding your beloved Jones or Stitch bags, (which are perfectly good, reputable, classic-looking, quality bags),  they either look like copies of my grandpa's bag from the 1950s or exactly like my first golf bag circa 1995.  What's wrong with owning a bag which was designed this century? There's plenty of good golf bags out there from many different bags.

I tuck my shirt in when I'm on the course because the guys on Tour do.  It's that simple.

And for the record, I don't own a hoodie, argyle anything, and my pants haven't had pleats in years.

But donít worry guys, heís just a normal guy with a super long list of hobbies...oh and a creative type... what a guy! Iíd like to thank my IG family as well, itís so hard being an influencer man.

Iím not sure if OP is trolling this guy from Instagram or is him but whatever, not sure Iíd want to golf with him.

Damn Millennials... wait, Iím 26...

I mean, to be fair, Vans does make the new UltraRange line of shoes. Have little nubs on the sole, very very similar to modern spikeless golf shoes. Probably wouldn't hold up the best in super wet and slippery conditions, but I'm sure they would hold up for 18 holes 75% of the time.

I'm nearing 30, but still a millennial (unfortunately). I'll always tuck my shirt in. I wear golf pants. I love my stock head covers. But when it drops below 45*, damn right I have a hoodie on.

Hell, off the course I wear black hardcore band t-shirts, black skinny jeans, and black vans. I have super long hair and a beard. Not a single person would look at me and think, "man, that kid golfs". But when I go to the course, it's completely different. Golf shirt tucked into golf pants/shorts. Untucked shirts on the course doesn't make you any more cool. Doesn't make you trendy or hip. Doesn't make you "modern". Tuck that damn s*** in, you jackrabbit.

A few of my thoughts as a 'millennial'... There are plenty of modern style shoes both with and without cleats.  Wearing Vans hasn't been in style in about 10 years so not sure where that's coming from.  I do like to leave my shirt untucked unless it's particularly long, or I'm playing a very nice course.  If you aren't wearing golf pants you must really like having your junk pinched on every swing...

I'm sure the point of this post is to stir the pot, and you'll probably succeed, but there is room in the game of golf for all types. If that's what you like to wear - then do it. Other people are going to do the same with their personal style. Some people may even wear different styles (casual, dressy, classic, modern) on different days.

Cool story but good luck playing many of the classic or any private clubs like that. Or maybe he just wants to enjoy life at Goat Hill Park. Either way good for him and hope he enjoys the game.

As for being an influencer, I look at it like if you have to tell people how important you are you arenít that important.

Those other ".01 %" of courses just so happen to be some of the most incredible places on the planet, but if tucking your shirt in and turning your hat forward crimps your style that much...

Here is a question. Which is bigger, the OP's ego or an aircraft carrier?

For the record, I'm 70 years old, do not wear pleats(have not for almost 25 years), pass on the backwards hat, do like mesh shoes when dry as I have two out of my ten pair of golf shoes, and still carry periodically.

I've known many great players over the years both in Canada and the USA and not one of them asked for approval about anything they wore or where they played.

I don't think the "modern golfer"'s choice of clothes/shoes is all that unique, and I see similar attire all the time.  Usually such folks are driving carts, drinking a lot, playing music and don't make a lot of pars or birdies.  My clothes and actions on the course are all coordinated towards the goal of lower golf scores, not compliments from septuagenarians.

What's wrong with wearing comfortable clothes to the golf course?

If people wear Vans then mess them up because of conditions, then laugh at them. Don't hate on them.

Hoodie? Guy, it gets cold. I, personally, will wear something a bit more weatherproof but, again, let them do what they do and laugh at them.

Golf pants? I don't own them. Don't need them. San Diego is nice and I have a couple pairs of shorts that work fine for me.

I feel like you started this thread to be a b**** to the people who definitely will not read these forums. Somewhat counter productive. But, I'll be sure to wear some joggers, adidas sandals, untucked shirt with opened up hoodie, and my Boston Red Sox team hat (more comfortable than golf hats) next time I'm at your course. Say something to me. It's a gentlemans game, after all.

First off, I'm the OP but I'm NOT the modern golfer according to that guy's definition.

To answer your question, there's nothing wrong with wearing comfortable clothes. The Modern Golfer assumes wearing a tucked in shirt or golf pants is uncomfortable. I'm very comfortable wearing my adidas shorts/under armour pants and under armour shirts. If it's cold I will wear a beanie and arc'teryx atom lt down to 35 degrees. I don't see the need to wear a hoody. I don't have a problem with hoodies, though.

Wearing vans to the golf course is like wearing vans to a wedding... yeah you can do it but do you want to be that guy?

I started the thread because I can. Whatever the reason, I wont say anything next time you're at my course. Probably nobody will. I prefer to be the guy who people say something to... you know, like let's meet for drinks after or come to my house for dinner.

I think Golf apparel or Golf Goods are moving in a broader more individual direction. I don't necessarily agree with the OP, but he opens the door to the conversation. The "Modern golfer" is not necessarily a millennia that is too narrow of a view in my opinion. Three generations of male golfers in my family over 50 years separating the youngest and the oldest, and  breaking it down you wont find that much difference in the brands all three generations support. For a lack of a better term I will call them boutique brands, brands like Linksoul, Gfore, Travis Mathew, Greyson and Johnnie-O among others. These brands offer a heightened level of style, and comfort and even a touch of individualism without sacrificing the performance the traditional sports brands like Nike, UA and Adidas provide. I believe that quality, style comfort and performance if all married together in a product will bridge generations, much in the same way a quality watch or automobile will.  Every man wants quality, he wants comfort, he wants performance and he wants it to be stylish or to look good  given a choice most men want to stand out rather than blend in. and none of  that is  limited to any one age group.
It was posted earlier and I believe is very fitting for the topic "wear what you want until you cant"  Travis Mathew Johnnie-O, Jones, Stitch and Seamus ,  among many others are all brands involved in our game that are doing well by offering a fresh new approach to how we all can all go to the course.  I guess you can call that a Modern Golfer.

I will say this...my clothing selections are more from the tour inspired, Tiger Woods line of clothing.  However, I have 3 golf shirts from Buckle and 3 pairs of board shorts.  The shorts are great for the rainy days.  Buckle...who would have thought.

The Vans look on the golf course, or the preppy skater look...meh.  Ryan Moore, lol.  Nice hat General!  Same with Ricky Barnes...whats up with that stupid hat.  I cant stand the flatbrims on the golf course, but hey, I bought golf apparel at Buckle.

40 year old man wears a flatbrim...makes him look younger everytime.

You are what you eat, you are what you wear, you are what you drive.  So that means Im a Chick-Fil-a nuggett, wearing a Nike Polo from Buckle driving an Equinox.

I am a bit older, but I do enjoy the taper look on the pants, will wear shorts as long as I can, I do have two pair of joggers that I wear as well, very comfortable BTW, I do not, however, wear the basketball/skater shoes, I wear Pro/SL, DNAs or Hyper Flex...most clubs I play they require at a minimum a collard shirt, there are a few that don't have a dress code and you'll see anything and everything...

While I have my own opinions about a lot of things on the golf course now, unless you want to back all of this up by complaining what the girls are wearing on the LPGA tour your arguement on "tradition" is invalid. And I double dog dare you to complain about what those girls are wearing.
