So I just got an email saying that I was selected as a volunteer for the 2018 US Open..  Prior to be selected I obviously chose to do to tasks that were more engaging and would allow for movement on the grounds or at very least some view of the golfing action.

That being said, it appears as though I have been selected as an admission attendee. So I am hoping that someone out there has participated in this fashion before and could shed some light on the role for me. Will there be time to wander the grounds and view some golf? Interact with other fans and volunteers? Not just sit on my a** for 12 hrs a day haha.

Anyways, all information would be helpful.

Hello there! I will be there as well in the Merchandise tent. You have to work four 5-6 hour shifts and then are free to wander around from what I understand. I would suggest starting to look for a hotel now. The prices are already going up and I found one for $100 a night but 30 miles away.

Nick (who likely sent you the e-mail) said there will be parking and shuttles available about 20 minutes from where I'm staying.

All golf volunteer positions include admission to every day...usually you need to work at least two shifts (half days), sometimes three.  Some tournaments dangle a carrot (free golf!) for those volunteers who do 5-6 shifts.

So you'll have plenty of time to watch the golf, though you may need to go another day to watch.

Enjoy!

USGA Majors rarely if ever have free golf esp. on a private course.

FedEx Playoffs and most PGA tournaments don't have golf option regularily.

Only LPGA and Sr. are usually good for getting the golf option.

Shift length depends on the function and when. Usually practice round shifts are shorter than Th-sun shifts. Then again, many functions don't occur during practice round.

For the 18 US Mens Open, you are required to do 4 shifts which are 5-6hr each.

The volunteers this year were able to get discount rates at Erin Hills for the remainder of the year, which was nice, but not something I would expect at a private club.

Hahaha what an idiot I am, I am sure I read that before but somehow completely missed the part regarding shifts. Thanks for pointing that little bit of info out.

Now I hope to find a forum that volunteers will chat on. Rent a big VRBO/Airbnb to cut down on costs. Could make the full week a pretty fun adventure!!

You should have been there for the last USMO @Shinnecock Hills, c2004. The college in-town, less than 1mi away, opened the dorms to the vols for the week at a cheap rate. Sadly this option isn't available this time.

Btw, what's to stop vols from talking here?

I can't be there all week and will likely only be there from Wednesday after lunch to Sunday evening.

I already have a hotel room booked but it is far from the course and I can cancel up to the day before check in. The room cost me about $525 for the four nights, so I would definitely be willing to pitch in for a house.

Let's see how many people we can round up in the next while. There are descent houses that are close by that can go as low as 300 a night but hold around 8 people. I don't mind roughing it a bit.

I do plan on being in the area for at least 10 days. But I am flexible with my time off and where I can be for about 2 weeks

Awesome! Listen, if I pay a bit more but have a whole house to use and it's closer to the lots where we have to park to take the shuttle, I'm in.
