Watch the Seve movie.

As a boy playing on the beach, Seve had only a 3 iron to play with.

He was given a 3 iron head and he attached a makeshift wooded shaft to allow him to swing the head.

Eventually one of his brothers was able to have a proper shaft installed for Seve.

Most of us can't even hit a 3 iron, he was able to master all shots with it.

After 5 years of Hoing I have more than enough clubs to choose from and i'm going to make what  i got work.

Best of luck in your journey.

Find an expensive grip you like, build up the tape just right, and only buy enough grips to re-grip the clubs you're using...

I actually do the exact opposite of that lol. I put all my grips on with air and no sticky tape, just build up tape. This way I can swap them over to any set or club I want to try and I never need more than 13 grips.

I've never been one to buy new clubs every year. Irons maybe every 7-8 years. Drivers a little more regular.....around 4-5 years. Did an update this year so doubt I buy anything for another 5 years or so. Being a senior, I may need sr shafts in a few years. Down to reg just this year.

NNNOOOOOOOO!!! LOL. Really that's brilliant! But it only feeds the monster:) A couple of years ago I purchased a case of my favorite grips, ended up with a garage full of clubs with the same exact grips. Went back to a new Ping grip for just the clubs in my bag, and have been using the same clubs for some time now...

For me...the better and better my swing got, the less and less I become a club ho since I can hit the most of my clubs solidly with predictable direction and distance.   With consistent shots more prevalent, I now value feel on my irons and woods as a high priority.  That is why I'm pretty set on my 845s and Vsteels. The driver is another story....

Being broke helps curb the spending...

Any money I get goes into boring responsible stuff (car, medical aid, groceries etc) and what little is left over gets spent on beer to get me through the golf, so there really is no room for more golf stuff.

I'm kinda in the same boat, and I've always known that having too much in the way of set/clubs is not good for your game. And what do you know? Here I am with a similar quandary, again. About 3 years ago I dropped down to one set of clubs. Bought a new set of i25's and went playing. Played well and lowered my handicap. From time to time whenever I had a bad shot or bad lie, I'd blame the club for not giving me the interaction that the forged clubs from my past gave me, felt if I sourced a quality forged set that my problems are solved. Well I did and no it didn't solve any issues, I hit them the same as the set I decided to keep as my only set. Now I have 2 sets again and argue with myself as which to use and keep as my one and only set. Something I heard about insanity awhile back I think applies here. I'm happy with my woods and wedges, just these damn Irons. What to do? Get rid of all and take up badminton. What a game.

Sometimes you find a club or set of clubs that just works and you no longer feel the need to buy more.

That said, I caved this week when a buddy had a great set of sticks for sale, and now my sponsor won't take my calls.

It will never end if you play more than a handful of times a year.

Irons? I'm happy with them.... Woods?...Titleist 2 year cycle is perfect as they are pretty beat up by then, and could be replaced...wedges? Always could be freshened up. Putter? They are here to stay.

You will always be buying if you play a decent amount, equipment does in fact wear.

I believe people take golf simply because they just want to collect and/or try different clubs. Scores? What scores. ? One can get easily get caught into their excitement of trying out different clubs. Are you in this category ?

Never stopped just took breaks here and there. Big purchases or obligations forced some breaks.

One thing that delayed my club search is golf lessons. Turning my focus to my swing took away time that I had to think or research clubs. Golf rounds changed from trying out the latest and greatest clubs to focusing on scoring. After I was satisfied with my swing the hoing continued.

This is my 4th year golfing and I've tried just about every single brand out there. I have a bad habit of thinking there's a better club out there more optimal to my game. Strike is everything, any recent club that's suited to your capabilities is going to yield good results.

I've bought and sold more clubs this year than anytime in the past. I'm understanding that clubs make very little to no difference in the scores I shoot. Yet I continue searching through the BST, Ebay, and Craigslist to hopefully find that magic club or deal. It's completely consuming and stressful to be honest. Any advice on how to quit this endless cycle?

I went a year and thought I was cured but failed a few days ago!  Good luck, no advice here.

When you find something else to spend your money on, really. For me it was clothes and sneakers.

Also when I asked myself which clubs do I truly like. As in, if I could only play one set. I made that bag and never looked back.

I buy stuff from GW and Salv Army to flip on eBay.  I try to get it to sell fast at minimum 10x profit.  I use that money to play more golf.  I got fit for some component builds this year and these have made a huge difference.  I still like to have some vintage stuff here to hit for fun.  Mainly the driver has been blown way out of proportion by advertising and I have overcome that constant urge to have the newest tech.  It is mostly hype.  I can bomb old small headed steel clubs nearly as far and definitely straighter so the point is moot with me.  Anyone looking for a Ping K15? ;)

Finding clubs that work. It has been a gradual process. Back in 2008 I hadn't bought a club in over a decade. Still had steel shafts in every club. Played with balls I found. Still carried a 2 iron.

Then I started to get back into the game more seriously. Found a 3w I really liked in 2010 and it's been in the bag since. Found a hybrid not long after and it has been in the bag since. Other clubs have turned over more recently but I have kind of reached the point where i like the bag i have and don't see the point in messing with it much.

I might get on the Mizuno shaft optimizer to see what shafts are the best fit for me.

Buying equipment is just a hobby like coins or stamps or guitars or anything else

Some suffer from the collecting more than others.  90% of my new buys are using gift certs at my shop.  I still buy shafts I want to try and bounce them from head to head (driver and fairways) and this works well to feed the ho habits most of the time

The other massive change was Golf Town putting pretty much putting all the golf shops out of business .... and couple that with the rapid fire release cycle of new stuff and used clubs became worth next to nothing.  I'm not giving a golf shop a $500 driver for $80 bucks 18 months later. I'd rather donate it or give to a friend or one of their kids

I think I have 150 or so clubs in the basement plus a mother load of nice shafts

I will say one thing I heard from Craig Stadler.  He used 3 sets of irons over 27 years on the PGA tour.   On a related note the s55's in my bag have been there for a record amt of time .. but T-MB's are a coming

Go to a demo day that has a Trackman and hit the "wonderclub" and then your current club. You probably won't see much, if any, difference if you have been properly fit for your clubs (driver, hybrid, whatever...) and know your specs. If you are comparing a Ping i25 7 iron to a Titleist 716MB 7 iron and think the Ping is "so much longer" than the Titleist, you don't realize that the Ping is 4-6* stronger than the same numbered iron from Titleist. So make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

If you see that much of a difference (and I am fortunate to belong to a private club to do this), I take the "wonderclub" out for a round and hit it side by side with my current club, In 8+ years, not a SINGLE club has gotten through these 2 "gates" to earn a spot in my bag. I would say 80-85% fail the Trackman gate and the rest fail on the course.

However, if you do find a club that passes both gates then I recommend 1 thing:  Buy the "wonderclub" :)

Once I got properly fit, I fell in love with every club in my bag. I pretty much only change things now when they wear out. Hard to wear out a driver, 3 wood and hybrid, hence mine are 8+ years old. Just updated irons from Titliest 680s to 716MBs since the grooves were wearing down. I replaced my wedges last year for the same reason.

It isn't that I don't go to demo days or try new stuff out. I do both, but I won't buy anything until I hit it on a Trackman and compare it to my current club.

Bottom line, I have little to no desire to ho clubs anymore and it is all because of Trackman

sounds stupid but i finally got mad at myself for never keeping a club i loved to hit, always thinking the newest is the best for me. So i stopped and man is it a difference. I will change club but not as often. I just got a new 3 wood this season, other one was 7 years old. The rest stay in the bag for at least 5 to 7 years. Putter is even less often.

Like others said before, baby on the way. My ho'ing was mostly out of boredom. I don't really have many other hobbies where you can buy and sell stuff so quickly and it all feels shiny and new again. But at the same time, I don't get out to the course as much as I want. I can globalgolf and ebay at night and during the weekend when I can't play. It's never really been about the equipment, as my scores are pretty much the same no matter what I was playing. But it is interesting to just tinker.

Soon there just won't be the time to tinker.
