Well for my second MP 18 combo set 2-pw it's going to play out like this:

MMC fli-hi 2-4 iron 2į week
SC 5 & 6 iron
Blade 7-pw
All with PX 6.5 shafts

My first go around was with the modus 120x shafts. Also a little different combo make up. 2, fli-hi, 3-5 sc, 6-pw blade. I spun the hell out of the modus so back to standard PX 6.5 I go.

I went with:

MMC PW-7 KBS Tour S SS 1* Flat

MMC FliHi 6-4 KBS Tour S SS 1* Flat

Stock Lofts and went with T18 49* Gap Wedge

Coming from Hot Metals, thought it was time for an upgrade, handicap has dropped down to 10.

... I am looking at:

MMC Fli Hi 4/5 irons
Recoil 95 stiff
Standard Loft, Length and Lie

SC18 6-9
Recoil 95 stiff
Standard Loft, Length and Lie

MB18 Pw
Recoil 95 stiff
Standard Loft, Length and Lie

... I don't think there is any difference between the SC and MB pitching wedge for playability, I just prefer the look of the MB Pw at address. I usually do not just loft until I play with them and see what distance and gapping is like. I have a Mitchel LL machine so it is easy enough to do myself after playing them a few rounds. The SC's remind me of some Snake Eyes I played a season and one of those irons you wonder why you ever got rid of them:

MMC P-7
Flihi 4-6

KBS tour 120 stiff hard stepped once
Bent where needed to get even 4 degree gaps from 46-22

I had played MP64s for many years and wanted something more forgiving but not too different. I am very happy with my new irons.  I don't keep stats (yet.. will be getting shot scope v2) but I know my GIR percentage is up and I shot my best ever round with my MP18 combo set.

Well, you asked for a rationale, so here goes an overly long-winded explanation from a 2 handicap...

I'm looking to put together a set of MP-18s for next season so I ordered two test clubs I know will be part of my progression - a 4 iron Fli-Hi and an 8 iron MB. I'm a garage tinkerer so I'll be testing a few shafts in these. I figure if a shaft works well in those two heads it'll work across the combo. I'm never fully confident picking a shaft/head until I've played it out on the course so this is my method. It takes some patience, but it has served me well over the years. What else am I gonna do once tournament season is over in a couple weeks, right?

For the past 2 seasons, Iíve played Mizuno MP-5s w/ DGTI AMT S400s 5-P, sometimes with the 4 iron, sometimes 4 hybrid. Played the Nike VR Pro Combos and Blades for about 5 years before that, so I have some experience with designed combo sets.

I went and tested each of the sets in the MP-18 line to try to figure out how I'll ultimately break it up once I settle on a shaft. Starting at the short end, this is my thought process:

8-P MBs - These are honestly the best looking short irons I've seen from Mizuno, or really anybody. Even down to the P, the top line basically goes straight across without any of the rounding people typically associate with a "shovelĒ look if that makes sense. Head size is great, soles are perfect. They just nailed the details here. These will cover distances basically up to 150 yds carry for me, where I want the most control. I've never had issues hitting up to the 8 iron in an MB model, so distance loss on mishits isn't really a concern. The SCs would obviously work here, but the MBs are just too flawless and super accurate. Standard lofts on these: 38-42-46

6-7 SCs - This area was a little tricky to figure out as the bridge between Fli-Hi and MBs. This is covering around 150-175 yds carry for me. I'm tall and play +0.5" off Mizuno standard, so this is where the MBs start to look a little small to me out at the end of that stick. The 7 MB is doable, but the 6 is where I started seeing distance dropoffs on mishits and some excess curvature. At these distances I'm typically not flag hunting unless it sets up for it. My goal is usually pin high or below the hole on the green. The slightly larger size and wider sole of the SCs gave me that extra bit of visual confidence and distance forgiveness without compromising looks/feel/offset/loft. The 6 Fli-Hi is tempting but I prefer the consistency of a solid piece of metal in this spot. No accidental low spin missiles coming off a hot face. Standard lofts on these too: 30-34

3-5 Fli-Hi - Man, these Fli-Hi irons are PHENOMENAL. This covers around 175-215 yds carry for me and Iím looking for the center of the green from here, not sure about y'all. I'm not usually a 4 iron guy. I've typically had more success with a 22* hybrid of some kind. I've been messing around for the last year with some "hot" long irons in the form of a TM UDI 18* and 23* and even a Mizuno H5 5 iron. These designs definitely keep the speed up and launch high. However, I really don't like the feel difference, the longer blade lengths, and the generally chunky top lines and soles. Mizuno fixed all of those issues with this design and somehow got a higher launch with a smaller head. The 4 and 5 blend perfectly into the SCs in every way. The feel is what I canít get over - no hollowness at all, very solid while still being hot. The 3 iron will be a specialty club for certain courses, mostly off the tee. The 3 starts to show a little a$$ on the backside, but nothing too bad. The 2 really showed it - that was the only one that looked a little goofy to me at address. More power to those that can hit it at 16.5* anyway! Slightly adjusted lofts on these three: 18 (1 strong) - 22 (standard) - 26 (1 weak) to give these a slightly progressive offset and to blend going into the SCs.

While itís a good club, the MMC didnít do much for me and I felt like it didnít fit as well in a combo set since it sort of IS a bit of a combo set in itself with the tungsten added to the 4-7. It seems designed to go right after the AP2 market as a full set. If the Fli-Hi didnít look and perform so great I might have considered these for the long irons.

These are as impressive a combo set as Iíve come across. Feel, size, shapes, offset, weights, etc. Everything just blends beautifully and feels consistent no matter how you break them up. Thatís a helluva feat for this picky guy.

Not sure if anybody made it through all that, but it definitely helped clarify my thinking haha! Enjoy your set, everyone!

I went Fli-Hi 3-4 irons 2 degrees flat, standard loft
MMC 5-7 irons 2 degrees flat, 1 degree weak
SC 8-PW irons 2 degrees flat, 1 degree strong

So thus the PW is @ 45 degrees.

All 0.5" short of standard. Hopefully the yardage gapping works out.

Considering the Fli-Hi is 2* stronger than MB/SC, and the Fli-Hi has a hotter face, would anyone consider having 2 x 6i in the bag ?

I could see doing:
SC -> PW-6i
Fli-Hi -> 6i-5i ( 1* strong )
^^^ This combo should have consistent gappings, and give the equivalent distances of SC in PW-4i.
Plus one has a "4i club" but in 5i length, which should offer more reliable contact.

I have hit all 4 versions of the MP-18 from the fitting cart and the Fli-Hi 6i is noticably longer than the MB/SC

I went with a Fli-Hi 4i bent 1* weak, 5i SC, 6-PW MB.  The 4i is definitely longer, but that helps my gapping.  My 17* hybrid goes about 230, 4i about 210-215, 5i 195ish.  Iíve only played one round with them so itíll take a little more dialing in but I like the setup a lot so far.

Went with:

5 - Fli-Hi

6-7 MMC - Bent the 7 iron 1 degree weak to better gap with SC 8 iron.

8-P - SC - Liked the forgiveness of the slightly larger SC head. Could play MB here but don't get out as much as I used to. (Also, I have the Srixon 965 for my full MB set.)

All 1 degree upright from Mizuno standard. Modus 120 S hard-stepped shafts. Love the clubs. Shaft is only thing I am not wowed by. I have played C Taper Lite X flex and PX 5.5 in other sets and definitely hit those 5 yards longer and more of a penetrating flight. PX probably fits me best. But the Nippons are very smooth, great feel with the MP18 heads.

Just stopping by to say I cannot believe how easy the Fli-Hi is to hit. It is the nicest club of this type -- driving iron, utility, whatever -- that I have ever had on a golf course. I only have the 5 iron, but I will add a 3 because I like these better than hybrids. I may even add the 6.

I swing it like an 8 iron, I think nice tempo that accelerates, and the Fli-Hi launches.

I never did like the H5 irons. Too clunky, I struggled with turf interaction. These are far superior. Look good at address and really lively at impact. Love the sole. In and out of the ground.

All the MP18 heads hit a market. They're beautiful and I am enjoying my combo set. I think anyone would love the playability of the Fli-Hi in long irons.

I am convinced that Mizuno despises left handed players. There's no reason a company of that caliber cannot offer more options. They are not a niche brand.

Fli-Hi 6-5-4  ( bent 1* weak )

I'll experiment/game with which 6i to keep in the bag, the other will became the driving-range club.

I've said this already: I was really excited with the whole JPX-900 line-up when it was launched, but the MP-18 line-up is even more exciting !

Just put in for a set...

3-4 Fli-Hi
5-7 SC
8-P MB

C-Taper Lite X
+1/2" 2 Deg. Upright

I didn't screw with lofts at all. My carry difference between the SC 6 iron and the Fli-Hi 4 iron demo was only 20ish yards on the launch monitor...but the 4 iron demo was STD length, so I'd expect a touch more distance. The SC 5 iron should split that difference pretty well.

I've never played anything but Dynamic Gold...but I decided I'd let the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer make the decision for me. I like high ball flight with full swings and am comfortable clubbing up and swinging easy to knock it down when I need to.

I did what appears from everyone else's set up, a bit more unusual but I really like them. FliHi 3, MMC 4 & 5, and MB 6-PW with Project X LZ 6.0. Haven't been able to hit the flihi yet as I just bought off a fellow WRX'r last week. The rest of the set up I really enjoy. The reason for the MMC to MB was that I wasn't entirely sure of the SC providing enough forgiveness in the long irons and my fitter had a MMC 4 iron to test so that sold me when I was able to smoke that club.  Turf interaction is great. Interestingly, I actually find my 900 tours to have a bit more softness, but that could entirely be my ball striking with a smaller true blade.

If I were to combo it would have been 5-7 MMC and 8-pw sc. I hit the SC fine when testing them but wanted the extra forgiveness in the longer irons. I ended up going with a set if 5-pw in the MMC. I am thinking about getting at least a 5 maybe a 6 iron as well in the flihi though.

I have SC 4-pW Project X 6.0 +1/2"....but thinking that the 4 maybe a touch too hard to hit...I ordered then standard lofts but ended up getting them all strengthened -2 except the PW which was adjusted -1...this is only because I was coming from Callaway Apex irons which are so much stronger
