There is a very similar thread in equipment forums, so my recommendation would be to check that out. AP2s are a great iron however I would not consider them "buttery"... they have the signature Titleist "crispness".. slightly clicky.

That said:  I will post what I said in that thread for incredible feel and forgiveness....

1.J15CB
2.MP-18MMC
2.900 Forged
3.MP-53
4.'18/'13 X-Forged
5.765/745

*notable mention for the 900 Tours and MP-18SC..fantastic feel though they will not be as forgiving as the above.

Your new set is in here.

Going from Ap1's straight to CBs might be a bit of a big jump.  I think going the AP2 style clubs or the Srixon Z565 perform pretty well.  Srixon irons have some good distance built into them.

Aeroburner TP 10.5
3W (15) Aeroburner TP
3H (19), 4H (22) Aeroburner TP
Nike VR Pro 4-PW DG x100

Alternate set:
Titleist AP2 712 DG x100 4-P, Callaway Jaws X Series CC Wedges 52 56 60, Honma HP 1002, Odyssey Arm Lock Putter

I am always looking for something mid-oversized with a softer feel. I have purchased in the last year: CF16, XR STEELHEAD PRO, i200, JPX HM, Steelhead, JPX EZ Forged. The club you are looking for is PXG 0311. I currently use the XF but am kicking around the 0311 in 8-G. I carry a 5 hybrid so it sounds like our setups are similar. Just take the plunge. 0311 is the one.

I am not talking about a blade that when struck purely feels like butter.  But something more along the lines of AP2 type of club with some forgiveness.

Thinking of buying a single 6 or 7 iron in a couple options off eBay and playing with them at the range to help me decide which set to go with.

I am getting much better as of late and ready to dump the AP1 irons, but at same time I don't want to completely give up on help from the club just for the ego. I have had AP1 irons now 2 sets in a row and before that was another cast set... wanting that forged buttery feel everyone always talks about.

Right now, I am kinda leaning towards the AP2... but looking for other suggestions.

Im still playing the Cobra Amp Cell irons from 5 thru LW. They really are a terrific club. Compact classic style, forgiving, look nice.  You can find a whole set for less than $200 on eBay.  May want to think about them.
Driver - Cobra King F7 w Diamond tour tipped S/X shaft

Hybrid - Adams Super XTD 22* hybrid w White Matrix Ozik Program S shaft

Another vote for the Stenson Legacy Blacks, softer  than my 545/765/965 combo set, and any other set iv'e got. Decent forgiveness as well.

Every time i hit them i wonder ---Why don't i just keep these in play and quit hoing around.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought some 716 CB. 5-PW with AMT S300 shafts.  Basically exact same setup I've hit in the stores. Excited for them to come in and hit them on the course. Have played AP1 irons for 5+ years now. Ready for the move. I realize the distance will be about a club off. But I'm anxious for the new gamers!!

Congrats on the new sticks!

Once received and hit you should follow up with the thread and let everyone know how they worked out.

Yes sir. Will do! I've hit them a few times in the stores. But never on a course. I plan to hit the range a couple times this coming week and play on Saturday. So I'll fill you guys in.

Here's a vote for the Wilson Staff V6's. Excellent feel. I wouldn't call it "buttery" (nothing compares to Mizuno) but they are soft and satisfying when struck well. When not struck so well these are about (+/-) as forgiving as any forged cavity back I've hit. Overall, you would be hard pressed to find a better looking club. They don't get much pub but they are every bit the club the CB is, the 770, etcetera.

If looking at Mizuno I would disagree with those who said 18 SC's or 900 Tours. Neither of those clubs are going to offer all that much in terms of forgiveness. I think the 900 Forged would be a much better bet.

OP, glad you found the ones you like!  Those CBs are beautiful, I am sure you will love them.

As for the bolded print above, Need4spd, I would go out on a limb here and say that your V6 feel better than any Mizuno I have ever hit.  I have never been wowed by any Mizuno forging I have tried but I DID get that feeling while demoing the V6 in the store a few months back.  Those sticks are probably way more overlooked than they should be.  Fantastic feel!!

Just to add here even though OP purchased some already, the most buttery, forgiving CB I have played are the Z745s and it's not really close.  The 716 AP2 are nice with the PX LZ, but the 745s are something special.  Lots of great options nowadays though...
